My first high school cheerleading tryouts were coming up and I was so nervous. Before I knew it tryouts were here. The tryouts were on April 15th and 16th. We have had two open gyms that week and that helped me calm down, but I was still really nervous. On Saturday we had it from 11 A.M to 5 P.M. I got there around 10:30 because that's when you could start checking in. You will never believe how many girls were there. We didn't get a lunch break so we just had snack breaks and drink breaks. I was starving by the end of the day because I only ate granola bars and fruit snacks in those six hours. Also, during that time I had to learn a cheer, floor cheer, chant and a hard dance. When I saw the dance I had the oh-my-gosh-I’m-going-to-die look. …show more content…
So Sophia, Lynse, Macy, and I Went to Panda Express. After that, we just went to Emily's house. We practiced the cheer and the dance over and over. Then her mom made us this amazing homemade ice cream. Shortly after that Lindsay's dad came and picked us up. We went to Lynse’s house, just to go over some of the materials we needed to know for tryouts. After Lynse’s, I was dropped off at my house. I practiced a little by myself and then went to bed. Next thing you know it's Sunday morning. Today was 1 P.M to whenever it was over. I got there around noon because that's when we could stretch out and do what we needed to. I felt really confident, I was getting spotted on my back handspring and hitting everything. I found out my group. I was with one senior one Junior and another freshman. We were the fifth group. When my group was called we looked at each other and headed for the gym. The judges asked us a few questions and I think I answered perfectly. We did all of our materials and we were
Once everybody got down to the floor, they played music for like 30 minutes for every body to dance to, and pass the time. Once the judges were done with the scores, they had everybody sit down. Then they started calling of the placings. The announcer calls the placing by the teams divisions. There are 6 divisions.
“Do your job.” A simple quote by Bill Belichick (New England Patriots Head Football Coach) but this quote means a lot about my character. The reason it means a lot to me is because if you work tremendously hard and do your job your team will be successful. My head football coach, Mike Rowe uses this quote as well and adds “If everybody does your job you will be successful.
I unfortunately choked up and didn’t make it on that team. Instead of giving up I choose to keep practicing. I decided to join another team outside of school to improve my skills. My new goal was to make it to my high school cheer team. My new team taught me team skills and with that we were able to win many competitions.
Deciding to go as soon a possible was a really good idea for me because I usually wait until the last minute. I feel like i'm a little ahead of my initial plan. It was originally for a standing and a roundoff back handspring but those are not the only skill I have gained, I have an aerial and i'm learning more. What I have learned
Now I knew almost all of the coaches except the freshmen. I wasn’t sure what to expect. I knew we were going to come out and work hard every practice. All I wanted to do was impress the coaches. I had an advantage over all my teammates, I kinda knew what they expected.
That’s when I remembered the time we were at tryouts. A year ago, when I was at tryouts, I was so nervous, sweat was dripping from my hands before we even got there. After the tryout, I was really happy with what I had did.. Then a couple weeks later, we got a call and they said
Due to my involvement in numerous extra-curricular activities, I have been able to greatly improve my leadership abilities. Throughout by six years in cheerleading, I have learned how to be a good representation of my school by doing what was right, even if I was doing it alone. At the beginning of my senior year, I was proclaimed as captain of the Varsity squad. With this position, I have worked to represent both my squad and my school by making the tough decisions and keeping spirit alive. To me, being a cheerleader meant being a leader first and cheering second.
During the week of tryouts we practiced right after school from 3:00 P.M. until 6:00 P.M. I was so tired that I had to come home and go straight to bed. I also missed my cousin's birthday party, and even a few other events because of practice. I missed some school events, too. But making the squad had always been an enormous dream of mine.
Those days were always the best three weeks I 've had in my life just because I 've always wanted to be a dancer and the fact that I was able to even perform at MY party was amazing, and we always practiced for three hours, so you really know that we couldn’t mess up. Of course, we would take our little breaks in between our rehearsal, honestly what got a lot better was that I was able to dance to my favorite singer, her name is Jennifer Lopez, I 've always wanted to be like her growing up, she also dances and I let my teacher know about that and we watched her video to the song that I was going to dance too and we added a lot of her dance moves into my routine and I literally felt like I was dancing just like her. It got even better, the whole idea of it being it a surprise dance is that no one of my family member 's or anyone I knew was able to go in there with me because it would defeat the whole purpose of it being a surprise.
After a nice and relaxing day at Disney with my teammates and coaches, it was time to compete, and nerves were running as high as NYC skyscrapers. As all 20 of us were getting ready, we got out nice little coach pep-talk from our coaches, Tim and Tammy, who I’ve known since I was a mere gymnastics baby, a two year old level one. Tim was in a blindingly bright purple tuxedo and Tammy was in an absolutely drop-dead gorgeous red dress, a humongous change from their usual athletic gear, for they lost a bet saying that if we all qualified for nationals they would dress up. I looked up at the clock and saw the dreaded time; 8:00 AM. “Time to leave!”
The try-outs were in the spring so I wanted school to hurry fastly. I wasn’t the only one trying out. Kat Wille also did. If it wasn’t for Kat and I to convince Aubrey McEnroe and Grace Menke to try out, they wouldn’t be dancing. We were all so excited to try out and we all four made the team.
I conquered tryouts and was able to compete at nationals but only as a flag girl. I didn’t have the skills necessary to do all the tumbling passes, or flips as most non-cheerleaders call it. The following summer I worked harder than I ever had. I practiced not only with my squad, but I went overtime. I practiced after everyone left.
Me and my group of girls got called and we shouted all the way in. Then we done are cheer and dance and shout. When we finished that we had to sit and wait. Then they bring out are cards say yes we have made it or no you did not. The coach said we could not open until we left the school ground.
I imagined the people from all around the district, milling around and excited to see what the fair had to offer. I itched to get started, and the moment the bell rang, I practically skipped out of 6th
I was terrified, here was a little soon-to-be eighth grader leading a group of high schoolers. It was nerve racking, but after it was done, it was one of the best experiences
