At the very young age of four years old I took my first of many strides on the ice. My first hockey season began not long after. I have three older brothers who all played hockey at that time, and I began to follow in their footsteps. I grew up watching hockey with my family and I believe that’s where my love for the game truly began. From the very first practice, I was simply in love and hooked with a responsibility to show up to all the practices and games every week. As I’ve gotten older my love for sports has grown and later began to be multiply.
I began my first hockey seasons in Teeswater with the boy’s teams who I had so much fun with. Growing up in the small town of Teeswater, there really wasn’t many girls like me who played the game that I have grown to love. I remember the many tournaments we played in in Tara, usually earning a medal and a trophy at the end of every year. I also remember wearing

Some people have reminded me how I handled everything with such passion and allowed myself to strive even harder for greatness. Following their decision I was more than motivated to succeed in another way. In my first season of playing girl’s hockey, I played for the Walkerton Capitals. We had a very successful year. It also possibly brought out the travel bug in me because we travelled anywhere from Huntsville to Windsor for a regular season game. We also participated in Sharkfest which was held in Barrie. It was a very exciting weekend to say the least, we won gold but I also got a concussion in the semi final game. We didn’t know for sure that I had a concussion but I knew there was nothing I wanted more than to be on the ice to play in the final game with my team. When we won gold, I couldn’t have been happier to have been a part of it. Needless to say, my first season of girl’s hockey was a success and I couldn’t wait for more opportunities to be
“Mr. Hockey” himself, also known as Gordie Howe, was arguably one of the greatest hockey players of all time. From growing up in the small town of Floral, Saskatchewan, to making his way to become an NHL Hockey Hall of Fame player, Howe has demonstrated a commitment to hockey throughout his entire life. He has displayed qualities during his career that will have an impact on many generations of Canadians to come. First of all, Howe had a successful career in hockey that inspires Canadian hockey players today. Secondly, Gordie was committed to hockey, as he continuously displayed his dedication to the game throughout his career.
Abby Hoffman is a former elite Canadian track and field athlete. Abby, her real name Abigail is Jewish and was born in Toronto in 1947. During her childhood, she learned to skate when she was only 3 and showed her interest in playing hockey when she was 9 years old (Abby Hoffman, 2017). Her inspiration of playing sports was watching her elder brothers, Paul and Muni who were Hockey players. Going back to the early times, Women have been a part of hockey and their popularity led to the creation of Ladies Ontario Hockey Association in the early 1920 forming teams like Aura Lee, North Toronto.
(106-107) Joining the Moose didn’t halt his love for hockey, yet expanded it, by moving the team spirit outside the residential school, separated from the direct pain, providing essential relief for a damaged child, forced to hide away due to people attempting to strip his ability to be himself. After playing softball for eleven years, I injured my back during my junior year high school season. It was my first season officially on the varsity team, therefore my devastated me. Although I was greatly saddened by this, I still stuck with the team. I went to every practice, game, tournament, and team dinner. I kept score at every game and helped my coaches with anything they needed.
The hockey community is a family and everyone is not only committed to pursuing their own goals and dreams, but also committed to supporting yours as well. This sense of camaraderie is what drives happiness
It was the middle of January, dead of winter of my eighth grade year. Coach Brooklyn Howell, the Lady Cougars basketball coach came up to me and said “come tonight, 5:30 at Byrnes Freshman Academy to try out and see if you like lacrosse.” I did not really know if I wanted to play in the cold, because I was so used to playing in a warm gym during the cold winter months. Lacrosse really did not seem like a sport that I wanted to play. But I tried it out anyway.
One activity that has defiantly created a change in my life is ice hockey. I’ve been playing hockey since I was seven years old. I know that playing hockey has changed my life is because it’s taught me time management, responsibility, discipline, and physical conditioning. One way that hockey has changed my life is it’s made me manage my time better. Every week and weekend I usually have practice on Tuesdays, and Thursdays.
All of those goals became memories. I worked so hard at everything that I became one of the top players in the United States. All the missed school events and parties, to become a good hockey player. I was 9 years old and went to the gym every day with a personal trainer. Hard work is soaked into me.
During my short life, I have not had many life altering experiences; however, one thing that has changed me for the better is playing hockey. Since I started playing hockey in eighth grade it has been something I have become passionate about for various reasons. One reason is my love for the game in general, and more specifically for playing goalie, the one position that holds the balance of the scoreboard. The second reason is being a part of a team. This is important to me because it gives a strong sense of purpose to the player.
If they weren’t there to encourage kids to try playing hockey I may have never played it. Everyone in my neighborhood started to play hockey and there were days we would play from sun up to sun down. The first time I tried skating I told my mom I wanted to be a goalie and ever since I have been a goalie. There was just something about it that I loved. As I grew up I realized that when I play hockey I have so much fun
Lacrosse has been part of my life since before I was even born. My mother, uncle, and cousins played, so it was only natural that I picked up a stick as well. I started playing at a young age and am grateful to have the opportunity to continue playing now at the collegiate level. However, for all the time that I have spent competing in the sport, there is another, more unique side to the game that I am also quite experienced in. I began refereeing for youth players in early high school and have continued to this day.
Dedication is the secret to success for many athletes. I started playing mini-mite travel hockey when I was five years old. At that level they focused on teaching us basics of skating and hockey skills. After playing travel hockey for a couple years, I quit hockey all together for coaching difficulties.
I was so exhausted sweat was dripping of my face and I was gasping for air every time I stopped for just a moment. My body was telling me to give up and quit but my heart was telling me give it all that I had left. Right then in that moment I found something that no one could take away from me, that day I found my passion for the game. This November was the first time I had been back to Apple Valley Middle school in many years and it does not look the same as it did but in my head it still had the faded white walls, the worn out purple pads that were on the wall.
One of my best days was when my soccer team won the championship. I won several other championships ,but with other teams. This was my first season playing with this team. The major characters in this event were me, my teammates, my coaches and the parents. This event took place in a park at sanger during the summer.
We arrived and there was my team. I was so excited and we became friends instantly. We had practice for about 4-6 weeks and then we had games. I don’t remember to much about our season. I think we went 4 wins and 4 loses.
