Personal Narrative: My Move To Houston

I have lived in East Oakland my whole life. To the majority of people, the mention of East Oakland evokes thoughts of violence, shootings, and gangs. I was one of the people who believed in these stereotypes, and for a particularly long time. I was one of the people who saw Oakland as a wasteland, a place with nothing to offer me, and a place I had nothing to offer to.

Theologically conservative leaders from United Methodist Church have formed a group within the denomination known as Wesleyan Covenant Association.

My move from my home state of Maryland to Georgia has greatly influenced my goals and perspectives. When I lived in the city area of Maryland, I had a limited viewpoint of life as a person who knew only of the city and had relaxed belief of living only within my comfort zone of what a city had to offer, however that changed when I moved to Georgia. Georgia proved itself to be a very different experience for me. Georgia is a lot bigger than Maryland so there was more place for its cities to be more spread apart and the environment had a more forestry background than what I knew at the young age. The change of setting and accustoms associated from the very different places made me realize that depending on a person’s position one object can be

NJHS gives opportunities unlike any other organization that our school provides for us and I am glad to be a part of such a prestigious group of intelligent young adults. Change is something the whole world goes through at one point or another in their lives, but what’s vital is what we chose to do with that change. It was the summer of 2005, the weather outside was as heavy as an anvil, nevertheless this was the norm in south Florida. My childhood was one to reminisce. Life was perfect, but that all altered when my parents said we were moving to Atlanta Georgia. Things weren’t as easy as I thought they would be, but my biggest reason was my school

I knew that I wanted to be a doctor since early high school. Experience in a hospital and clinic setting, both personal and professional, have given me many reasons to pursue medicine. Through these viewpoints, I have gained an understanding of patient hardships like financial and travel issues, the grief associated with loss, and the trust that accompanies putting yourself or a loved one into the hands of physicians. These experiences have built empathy and compassion in me that is necessary in medicine.

What is it like growing up in Texas? I have people always state that their home state is the best place to grow up, but I can honestly say where I grew up was the best. We had some much to do and so much to see. Texas has some amazing history in almost every city. I was born March 20, 1991, on the first day of spring. It was a sixty-nine degrees day. I weighed in at seven pounds two and a half ounces. Texas usually has fantastic weather, so growing up there was a dream. When I say fantastic weather I mean we had every season in one day. Sometimes it got crazy but I would not have it any other way.

Often I hear the phrases “this state sucks or I can 't wait to move” but many don 't know exactly where they want to go. As for me when asked if I could live anywhere, Texas came across my mind instantly .

When I was 14 I had to move to San Clemente, California. I had already recently moved temporarily to Texas while a house was made ready for us on the military base. “The house is ready!” my mother had said excitedly, after being on the phone for a few minutes. “It’s time to go back?” I had asked. She had said yes then left the room. I then had to move from Texas back to California with my mom, sister, brother, and pets. Once we arrived it was quite an adjustment, I gained an injury, a new academic program, and added responsibilities at home. I guess it didn’t have to be so hard, the move, but it was quite a difficult experience.

This past year our very own Caleb Andrews was on the board for CASL as a Southern Director as well and worked all year long along the side of a number students from all across Southern California who were also Southern Directors. We are so fortunate to have such an amazing Leadership program on our campus with even greater leaders as a part of it. This year during college summer break, my friends planned a trip to Dallas, TX to visit the place, where former US President “John F Kennedy was assassinated. President Kennedy was shot dead on November 22,1963 by Lee Harvey, Oswald. Dallas is a three-hour long drive from Houston, TX. All of us were excited for this trip. The trip was a success as for all of us it was a learning experience, as we visited the historical landmark of US history which has influenced us all.

As I look back upon our journey with the Knee to Knee Couples Club, I feel an overwhelming sense of pride, fulfillment and accomplishment that God gave me the vision and the inspiration to begin the club and what a journey it has been!

For this pastoral interview, I interviewed Andrew O’Brien. He has been serving as the missions pastor for North Ridge Church for two years. O’Brien lives in Falls City, Nebraska with his wife, Emily, and two young sons. Being a child of missionaries in Mexico, he has always had a heart for missions. In obtaining higher education, O’Brien attended Philadelphia Bible College (now Carin University), to obtain a degree in Bible as well as a minor in missions. I talked with O’Brien his doctrinal position, strategies, opinions, and practical applications of the church with missions.
