Jason Mraz once said, "Hold your own, know your name, and go your own way." My identity and the beginning of defining and discovery of myself begins with my very own name.
My full name is Daisha Marie Griffith. My first name means “alive” in Arabic. My parents always said they named me after Tyra Bank’s character in the movie Higher Learning, Deja. My parents playfully argued over who actually named me. My middle name is very typical for most Puerto Rican girls from the Bronx and it ties to the Catholic religion. My last name comes from my father who is Panamanian and it means, “fierce, strong warrior or lord”. The origin of my last name comes from the name Griffin, which is Irish. My gender is something that I’ve never really had to think

I’ve traveled to Puerto Rico with my family and believe enrichment is an understatement when it comes to the beauty of the island. Puerto Rican traditions that I’ve grown up into include rich foods like white rice, beans, chicken, empanadas, bacalao which is codfish, avocado, plantains, pernil and Malta. Not only does the beautiful nature of the island and food make me proud to be a Puerto Rican but also the outstanding culture. This includes the music like reggaeton and salsa, the beautiful flag and the overall happy spirit and pride of Puerto Rican people. I am also proud to be Panamanian even though growing up I never met anyone who was Panamanian. In addition, I was never raised in that culture because my dad wasn’t either. My father was born in Panama but migrated to California when he was only two years old. Much of his childhood he did not live with his parents and to this day he doesn’t speak any Spanish. The two cultures that I have grown up with also include American culture and the age of computers even though I’ve actually never defined myself as the typical
For instance, Ruth’s parents gave her the second name because they believed it could help her fit best into the American culture and to acquire self-acceptance easily. Names, therefore, define who we are and determine the feeling of what an individual can accomplish. Throughout our lives, names always give the first impression of cultural identity, orientation, and origin. For instance, my name means I am an honest and kind person, and also reveals my cultural disposition as well as religious affiliation. I was named after my father, therefore, granting me self-awareness and a deeper sense of
My full name is Martha Moreno. The name Martha is an Aramaic name that means “Lady”. In the New Testament, Martha, the sister of Lazarus and Mary of Bethany, was a housekeeper who was in charge of looking after Jesus when he visited her house. Due to this connection, the name Martha is associated with domestic labor and hospitality. (http://nameberry.com)
My name does have a story along with my middle name Douglas. If I was born a girl my name would´ve been Carolyn Lisa King. I wouldn't have liked that name so I'm lucky I was born a guy. My dad was named after his grandfather (dad´s side) and his great grandfather (mom´s side) his name was Douglas Allen King. Allen from his grandfather's middle name and Douglas from his great grandfather.
Throughout my life I have come from and created a few identities for myself. Perhaps, the most dominant identities that have been apart of my life are being an athlete and being a family orientated man. In this paper I will write about how my identities have shaped my life. First off I believe my biggest identity is being an athlete.
I can not remember a single time in my life that I didn 't like my name. I have tried on different, exotic sounding names playing dress-up; I have played the person of other names during make believe, but I have always loved my name. It had several syllables to it and just always sounded pretty when it was said out loud, even better, it looked so beautiful written out, especially after I learned to write in cursive. Katrina is the German form of the name Katherine, although I have also read that it is Scandinavian and African. It is supposed to mean pure, but that part of my name just never fit me.
As of late names in the work environment have turned into a contention. Raven Simone, a commentator on the 'The View', stated that on the off chance that somebody had an Afrocentric or odd name that she would not contract them taking into account their name. As the discussion came up in the round table dialog, she expressed how somebody with the name 'Watermandraya', would be somebody that she would not contract. She will more than likely apologize for it; be that as it may, there has been reaction from it. There may be a supposition that if a person has an ethnic name they may be seen similar to a particular ethnicity or some may relate them with a specific religion.
Richard Blanco tried so hard to get his family to assimilate into the American culture, but his efforts fell short to Cuba’s permanent cultural residence in their hearts. His abuela, abuelo, mom, and dad couldn’t forget Cuba even if they tried, especially because a lot of things in the United States of America reminded them of their past lives in Cuba before Castro came into power. When Blanco got the chance to plan his first real Thanksgiving Day meal for his family, he tried to integrate common American dishes including cranberry jelly, candied yams, turkey, and pumpkin pie. His family just made fun of the foreign food to them like the pumpkin pie, which translated to feet in Spanish. They were resilient to change just like how my family is now with fashion, foods, and learning new
This may shape how they see her and treat her, which in turn will shape who she is as a person. People may treat her like a beautiful woman, and this will give her confidence. In this way, a name can shape identity. Something a name does not have the power to do is change a person’s narrative. It cannot alter or negate where they grew up, how they grew up or how they progress through
Many of the names were chosen from the bible on the day of a child’s birth. Letting God choose a child’s name shows a level of faith in the parents which often results in awkward and weird names. The use of the name, Magdalena called Lena, is similar to the phrasing in the bible in names like Simon called Peter. Toni Morrison put a lot of emphasis into the characters' names in Song of Solomon. The main characters' last name of Dead has a lot of emphasis.
My name is Sarah Vab Vue. My parents both decided on my name and it deals with much of history and understanding. “Sarah” also has a good meaning. It was inspired by my religion. “Vab” has a strong meaning in my culture and is very unique.
This is my mom’s mom’s maiden name. My grandmother is a simple women. She is soft spoken and is the type to say “oh I don’t know deary, go ask grandpa…”. She stayed at home her entire adult life to raise the kids, and never got her driver 's license. It wasn’t because my grandfather was a stern man,
When there was no hope they created their own. My name is Paw Law La. Paw as a flower, Law La as unique, different, and rare. Wonderful.
After some years of life many people receive a nickname, which could be a shortened version of their first name or something completely unrelated. My given first name is William, but I have always been referred to as “Will.” William is taken from the Ancient Germanic name “Willahelm;” Will meaning
In Italian my name means clear, bright, and famous, the meaning in Latin is the same thing. . What stands out to me my name meaning, in Swahili means princess. Also, my name means in Irish, dark, small. My mom came up with my name from the movie The Lion King II Simba’s pride. She felt the character is strong minded, as for I feel I’m pretty strong minded.
I have never really been good with names. Most times, I just assign specific variables or tags for anyone and almost everyone I meet, reasoning that it’s much easier to organize liabilities or assets that way. When she turned to face me and greet me once upon a time, I immediately fell captive to her subtle allure. As time went on, I fell deeper and deeper into the chasm of lies she hides so discreetly behind her charming smile and gentle (yet compelling)
