Personal Narrative: My Personal Perceptions Of Nursing

Nursing is a hard profession; as well as, a very rewarding profession. Nursing is not only the skills you learn in school, such as, putting in an IV, pathophysiology or assessment of the patient, but it also requires empathy and compassion. This career is not for everyone. What persuaded me to become a nurse is when I was four years old I was diagnosed with Leukemia ALL, this changed my life for the next three years, while I was getting treatment for my cancer. I would be around nurses and doctors twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week during this time. This is when I knew I wanted to be a nurse.

What is a nurse? According to the dictionary, a nurse is someone who is trained to care for sick or injured people. Nurses are well respect because of the career they choose and the danger they go through every day. They can get pricked with a needle that is infected with HIV or get coughed on by a person that has the flu. Just because nurses are respected they are stereotyped day by day. They are often stereotyped as being women, male nurses are gay, they always work in a hospital, they will always marry someone that is the medical field, they all were white scrubs and a cap, and they are all the same.

I started my health care career as a nursing assistant at the young age of 16 years-old perusing the dream of one day becoming a nurse. At that time, I really had no idea what I was getting myself into and what it meant to be in the health care. I have been able to touch and impact so many different people’s lives throughout the last 6 years from patients and residents to their family members. Sometimes not even realizing that I was changing someone’s life. Although I’ve helped hundreds of people there is one person that will I will always remember.

What does nursing mean to me? Nursing means helping people heal, meeting their needs while they are in your care, listening to concerns, protecting them from harm, and educating them how to care for themselves while treating them with dignity, compassion and respect and giving of yourself to the care of people and community. It is having compassion for people and their health and being a humanitarian, making sure they receive the best care possible. Nurses must also treat families of patients with kindness, realizing they are going through a stressful situation also.

As a child you are always asked , “What do you want to be when you grow up?” Sometimes our answers are generic , like a firefighter, astronaut, or a doctor. Our parents are excited with these responses because it means we choose to aim high. Unfortunately as children the process of getting into the career you dreamed of is not as instant as growing up. Many factors come into play growing up which will either help you pursue that dream or find one entirely differents. Pursuing a career as a Registered Nurse is a part of me that I am extremely passionate about. It is not only a career path for me, however it’s a part of who I am. When I am asked,Why do I want to be a nurse? My answers are always, this is a challenging , emotional and educational career in which each area grows beyond expectation throughout one's career and I want to be part of all of that and more. I feel that my passion and perseverance can make this vision of becoming a registered nurse a reality.

In conclusion, nursing is a superb field to belong to. They endure arduous working conditions, require a degree or diploma, and are compensated adequately. It may be a challenging profession, but it is gratifying to be able to help an individual. Being a nurse is not always as easy and picture perfect as people paint it to be. A nurse is expected to act perfectly professional, even when tears, anger and all-around emotions are begging to come out. A nurse must always be the one that has their life together, especially when others do not. They are there to be the ones to hold and care for others in desperate times of need. I am capable of being a nurse because I have been a Certified Nurse Assistant for over ten years; I give not only the book knowledge, but a piece of my heart to each and every patient I care, always on the top of my game and make sure that my patients are clearly understood by everyone else C.N.A is very stressful job where traumatic situations are common. Nursing is hard job. Nurses who work hard by taking care of the patient. I am in college with no career choice. I had no experience about what it will be like to be a nurse. My mom always wanted me to be an accountant. So I decided to major in accounting. Accounting is all about numbers. And I was good at math in high school. I was enjoying math, and never got bored when I was doing my homework. However, I like to study about human body structures. Taking care of patient. Choosing a right major was getting harder and harder because I enjoy doing math problems and l love to take care of people. Major in nursing so I can take care of patient, and chance to work with different people.

From the beginning of my nursing endeavors, I knew that working at Broward Health will be my goal. My work towards it wasn’t easy, but I hope that this healthy challenge will be rewarded one day. Whenever I could, I choose to have my clinical rotations at one of Broward Health System hospitals. My first three clinical rotations were on oncology floor at Broward Health, where I was exposed to patients with various and serious conditions. Despite the fact that most of these patients were suffering, they fought and had hopes in them that really made me going. My instructor was a spunky woman. She stood at 5’4 with long, brown locks. She possessed a big personality and an even bigger aspiration for her career. On the first day of class she told us she was a registered nurse. She presented her career as emotionally fulfilling and gratifying. It was at that moment, listening to her on that first day, that I knew nursing was what I was called to do. Even as I shadowed nurses during my senior year of high school, I felt a belonging in my spirit. I observed these nurses show such compassion and solace to the people they continuously encountered. As I ended my senior year, I asserted that I would become a nurse.

Nurses are every day heroes who not only dedicate their compassion to care for the vulnerable and ill but nurses must attain the proper training and education to provide quality health care. Ever since I was a little girl my dream was to make a positive difference. I am fortunate that I’ve had the opportunity to share my love and compassion with the elderly, rehabilitation patients, chemical dependency patients and individuals with diverse disabilities through my role as a Certified Nursing Assistant since 2006.

Specialization – of course all of this have one area that we wanted to specialize. For me it is necessary for creating a professional growth and continuous learning.

It is a profession in which teamwork between healthcare providers is essential to provide safe and appropriate care to all patients. I believe that nursing is a profession for me, and will continue to expand my knowledge as a nurse by educating myself, growing from past nursing opportunities, applying knowledge, and learning from patients and their families. My vision is to continue to develop my knowledge and grow as a nurse. As I continue to grow and learn about nursing, I believe that my philosophy will evolve with every new experience and will positively impact the client population. I trust that my philosophy of nursing will have a positive impact on my clients as my goal is to consistently provide competent, safe nursing care to all which is culturally safe.
