My plan for academic literacy improvement has progressed nicely this semester. Although, I understand this will be along process - as mentioned in Grellier and Goerke (2014), the best way to develop your reading and writing skills is to do hours of exercise – each minuet step I take to improve will be beneficial. Even with my hectic life schedule, I have managed to implement all the strategies mentioned in Assessment one. Vocabulary builder has been a website I visit everyday. Learning five new words a day was proving to be difficult – one or two days after learning a new word I was forgetting its definition. This lead to me reviewing my plan; instead of learning five new words, I would simply read over five random words – known or unknown
This assignment was one of the hardest paper we had to do in our quarter because, we had complete freedom on how we wanted to develop our topic. During the peer review I found out that I had done the assignment wrong and didn 't have a clear idea of what I wanted to project in my paper. I took a moment to decide what I wanted to say and started to change and remove sentences that weren 't necessary. On my first draft of my Literacy Narrative I made negative statements about my writing, which wasn 't the purpose of the assignment. After some time, I finally decided to write about my growth in writing and how I found another outlet for my creativity and where I consider myself to be good at.
I didn’t learn to read or write until I was 7 years old. I was in my second grade class and my peers and I were sitting in a circle when the teacher called on me to read. I sputtered some gibberish with a tomato red face. The only words I recognized were “it’s” “it,” and “a”- which is really just a letter.
I think I am a good reader. I think this because my Lexile reading level is 807-957, which I think is pretty high for a 6th grader. By the end of the year I would like to increase my Lexile level to 980-1,000. The way I can achieve this is by reading harder books and having to understand the harder books. My highs of reading are I get to have down time, I get to interact with my characters,and I love the book I am reading right now, “Auggie and Me”, it’s the sequel to my favorite book.
On most essay topics there are specific requirements that must be followed which can then limit the student’s ability to expressively write and cause them to feel less confident since their writing is restricted. Literacy narratives, however, allows the student to write freely and express themselves more due to the fact there is incorrect answer because afterall it is the writer’s own personal experience. In my particular literacy narrative I spoke how disappointed I was to spell “hoax” as “hoaks” in my elementary school’s annual spelling bee even though I still placed fourth overall. Although that tiny detail is not greatly needed, I put that in my essay anyway because I felt like that was something important to share. When it comes to stricter
Early in my life, I used books as an escape from the harsh reality in front of me. When I was around five years old, I was trapped in an abusive and sheltered household. When the yelling started, I used to hide under my bed and stay very quiet. I would read any book that I could find to keep my mind off what was happening around me. I made myself a safe space under my bed with a light and pillows.

Even with my hectic life schedule, I have managed to implement all the strategies mentioned in Assessment one. The first step I needed to take was to advance my vocabulary.
In my literacy Narrative I will be tackling two problems. The first being my illiteracy in fanti, and the second being my struggle with speaking and pronunciation when I was little. I will be covering a small moment from preschool when I first started to struggle with pronunciation, and discuss how I fixed my english, but at the same time lost any linguistic connection I had to fanti. The second problem will more primarily be focused on in the introduction and conclusion, while the first will be the subject of my small moment. The defining moment any particular will be when my teacher talks to my parents, about me having a literacy problem with speaking english properly.
For my literacy interview I interview a young lady by the name of Jeanette Zamarripa. I did Ms. Jeanette because I have gotten to know her over the years. I met Ms. Jeanette at Lone Star in Tomball a while back, we had a math class together, but we never really talk to each other, until last year we have several classes together, and we did remember each other from the math class we took a while back. I think everything happens for a reason, and that the Lord put people in your path for a reason as well. We were both attending UHD.
For my educator one-on-one assignment, I choose to interview Sara Dotty, who is my host teacher at Marcy Open School. When I was given this assignment, I started to think of who I could interview and I was thinking of my high school teachers. But then I started to think how I could connect more with the 3 grade students that I’m working with, and how I could get to know them better. So, I decided to interview Sara because I thought that if I get to know my host teacher better I will be able to connect with the students more.
My Literacy Narrative I was never truly an avid reader when I was younger. I was the oldest of five siblings and left in charge of taking care of my younger brothers and sister. I was more prone to spending time outside than reading a book. Of course, I did find myself enjoying a good mystery novel, but playing ball would always trump even a good book.
For as long as I can remember I have loved reading. Fiction, non-fiction, biographies, it doesn’t really matter to me. I remember my mom trying to teach me how to read when I was three. I started off reading small Dr. Suess books and then it was on to newspapers and chapter books. One of my all-time favorite books when I was a kid was Junie B. Jones.
I 've learned that reading and writing can take me any where I want it to go. I can explore my mind to go anywhere by imagination, by reading and writing. However,My reading and writing experience since I was a kid until now I still having a difficulty. When I was 3 years old my mom started me to learn how to read and write. At first, I 'm having a difficulty to read and write but my mom tried her best to taught me.
Personal Literacy Narrative Reading and writing is a tool everybody needs in their lifetime the basic reading and writing skills are used on a daily base no matter what field you plan to study. Reading and writing are taught at a young age. I personally was taught by preschool I noticed on how I grew with my writing and how I became a better reader and writer throughout my life I personal love reading and writing it’s a way for everyone to express themselves through their choice of words. Everybody learns how to read and write differently some students tend to be stronger than others, personally speaking I feel I tend to be higher in reading then writing.
My Journey to Literacy As kids we are taught literacy without knowing it. Our parents or teachers have sat down with us and helped us write out our letters, sound out words, and form sentences. We were all given crayons at restaurants and a piece of paper that had fun games, cartoons, and tic tac toe. There are few people who have not learned to read and write, or have learned in a different way or at an older age.
I believe that I have learned many useful lessons this semester. At the start of this semester I honestly did not know how to write a proper essay. There were several big problems with my writing style. My poor grammar and lack-luster writing skills were a real problem. I feel more confident now that I have written some decent papers and come close to completing my first English class.
