Every Sunday I always go to church and usually the congregation is divided into the general sections. You have the youth who sits in the front; the families occupy the middle and the elderly who sits in the back. I never really have the chance to talk to the elderly in the back. Of course, I come and kiss some of them on the cheek and say hello but, never thought that I would have the opportunity to sit and understand them. The initial idea was to choose someone from an elderly center but, they denied me for privacy reasons. I’m glad I was given the opportunity to interview someone that I never had the opportunity to speak too and understand. This intergenerational project provided me with wisdom from a woman who lived through it already.
The Coming of Age in America stories is very appealing to read. Some of the stories had brought back my memories when growing up. It’s commiserating with me on my unfortunate circumstances. The authors tell stories everyone will go through the stage as we grow. We encounter much small or large crisis and unexpected throughout our lives. All of us will have experience difficult at a certain point, and how we cope with most of these experiences. It does not matter how different culture we have, but we all have common experiences. By seeing the similarities can help us to understand and accept other people’s circumstances. It helps to understand different kinds of people and different cultures. Readers have a better understand ourselves, others,
“It’s what we think we know that keeps us from learning” This quote from Claude Bernard describes my writing development this year. At the beginning of this schoolyear, I thought that I was going to go into this year and be able to breeze through this class because I could write a good essay last year and analyze stories, but I was wrong. Lit Comp Honors has been a brand-new experience for me. In previous years, I have never had to work hard for a good grade. Now I have to put in extra time every night to go over vocab and stories or else I would get a bad grade. This class has taught me how to work harder and how to study better and that’s not even the writing aspect of it yet. My writing has gotten better because of
This psychological assignment requires us to break a social norm. In my case, I decided to break an appearance social norm. I thought in something weird, but at the same time really funny. Therefore, I entered to my little walking closet and I took the most brilliant and extravagant high heels shoes that I found to wear them at a place when people usually used flip flops.
I have been doing some thinking about our conversation a few days ago and have concluded that I will take you up on the offer! I just sold my old bike and now have some money left over that I can use to pay for those seminars. I am going to see how soon I can get this done, I am going to look at the dates and send my form in.
When I was in kindergarten, I did not have friends; my highs and lows oscillated on the approval of others who understood me even less than I did myself. For picture day, I remember being happy to wear my favorite shirt: a Strawberry Shortcake blouse with ruched sleeves. A girl
Betty was born August 30, 1930 in southern Missouri. Her parents, Maggie and Casey, were your everyday farmers in Christian County. She had an older sister, Wanita, and an older brother, Wayne, as well as a few younger siblings. Growing up, she was blessed to be in a Christian home, where your faith was everything.
“Set,” Bang! The gun goes off and I quickly shoot ahead of the rest of the field. My strides long and quick as I sprint for the track. I can’t hear anyone behind me, I must be a good 10 meters in front of everyone else. I run around the track and continue to sprint across the field back to the crowd of parents, friends, and girls soccer players who were forced to attend this last cross country meet of the season. As I continue to approach the group, my mind and body turn numb, Everyone is cheering for me, and I realize that I’ll never experience this again. I’m practically floating through the course, still no other runners are near me. That was the way it would stay, all the way through the 3.1 miles as I crossed the finish line in first place, capturing my team’s second league championship and undefeated season.
Upward Bound with Tarrant County College along with AVID at South Hills High School have guide me through my high school trajectory. During the last 3 years AVID has helped me speak up and diminished my self-esteem issues such as speaking to other mates and creating what we called an AVID family. Upward Bound has been a catalyzer for me to learned how to managed my finances such as loans, budgets, and banking services. Since I was the lead of my family both organizations helped me become a more experienced person at a younger age. More than a college readiness program AVID and Upward Bound are the dispensers of life lessons and the nest of future leaders.
When we were younger nobody cared how you dressed or what you looked like, but that changed as we got older. I realize how young and careless everyone was and it did not matter if people wore brand names or “hand me downs”. A child’s only concern was if you were comfortable enough while playing with friends. What age did that begin to change? Well, if you were anything like me, it would have been my middle school years throughout my high school years. I was very picky with what I wore. I had to wear clothes that were popular, and if it wasn 't, then I wouldn’t wear it. Most girls care about their appearances as they start to grow up because they want to be popular, be liked by boys, or find who they will be. Several commercials are always
More Than Just a Grandpa When deciding who I was going to use for my life changing person I had somewhat of a hard time, because I wanted refrain from using the norm and really think who has made me the person I am today. I thought about my topic for
No matter how prepared an individual may be or expecting of a death, to lose a family member to death can be a traumatic experience. The grief process is a difficult process. However most understand that death is a natural and expected life event (McBride, and Simms, 2001). With that said it usually does not make the death of family member any easier to absorb emotionally. Although I have familiarly and awareness because of the deaths of my Father and Sister, it does not mean that I am comfortable with death, or have all the right words to say to comfort a person in the grieving process. I think a person can listen, extend a helping hand, pray, or a should offer a to cry on, but for the most part, there are
Seventeen is a mystery flavored lollipop. The flavor is something you recognize but can't put your finger on. So many things are “old hat” compared to those little freshman walking around the halls; and yet, I still find new experiences and people often enough to keep me slightly timid of
Since I was little reading was a struggle for me. Which caused writing to be difficult for me as well. Teachers and my parents doing everything they could to make reading and writing and overall learning easier for me; however, all this extra help I did not like. Help consisted of eye therapy, doing extra outside of school, and special help in
The period that I enjoyed the most was the first two years. I have a niece who is now 20 months old and it has been fun watching her grow and reach certain milestones. While studying this chapter, I tried to make reference to her and use her as my guidance in understanding the chapter and its contents better. One thing in particular I remember her going through is separation anxiety. My sister lives on the East Coast due to her husband’s job, but she has come back to continue her education. When she first came back, my niece was only attached to her and would not let her leave her sight. I remember the first few times my sister left her to get a shower, even if we had her in the bedroom next to the shower, she cried the entire time. We tried everything in our power to get her to be quiet but at first it did not work. Within a week however she
