So my mom taught me to not be negative or rude to those who had that one barbie everyone wanted so bad. But when we did have money, I would get rewarded with a toy because I would be doing good in school or behaved well at home. However when it came to my older siblings, they weren’t gifted with the same opportunities like me. My brother and sister were high school drop outs, so they really didn’t set the right example for me.
Although Vassar boasted numerous female professors, a predominantly male staff held all of the high leadership positions. Vassar charged high tuition fees in order to limit enrollment to the upper class. In an act of elitism, the college refused to lower their tuition as they did not want to accept those of the middle or lower class, who they believed would lower the level of intelligence at the school. In 1963, 200 years after Harvard University first began admitting students, they opened their doors to women.
Still Separate, Still Unequal by Jonathan Kozol I found this article to be very interesting and extremely heartbreaking. Jonathan Kozol paints a vivid and grim picture of predominantly black or Hispanic schools in and around some the largest cities in America. Even in areas where the distribution of races is somewhat equal, Kozol tells us that most white families would rather send their kids by bus to a school where more than half of the students are white. Some schools, like Martin Luther King Jr. high school in New York City, are located purposefully in upper middle class white neighborhoods in hopes to draw in a more diverse selection of children, i.e. more white kids. It seems however, according to Kozol, that this plan not only did not work, but has made it a prime and obvious example of modern segregation in our schools.
I want to be different; to be everything everyone ever expected my to be, and more, but not for them. I'll do it for me. I want to do better and give my kids better than what I have, give my husband a better marriage than what I see, and give myself a better life. I'll realize that I deserve better and I'll know that working for it is my only
Until, he met Justin who was the only other black kid in the school. “My mother saw Riverdale as a haven, a place where I could escape my neighborhood and open my horizons. But for me, it was where I got lost” (Moore
“It’s About Time, Augusta!” by Lydia Gumm, Augusta National Golf Club has been discriminating against females for many years and nothing has been done about it, until 2012. Even then people were still prejudice with the bathrooms signs saying “Males Only.” This represents how Augusta is until it finally ended with their first female member. In other matters, the all-male members owned the club, which allowed them to do whatever they wanted, and this allowed them to deny membership to women. Consequently, this is not the only discrimination that Augusta has faced.
First of all, some argues that the tittle IX grants equal sporting opportunities for both male and female students; however, the inequality or unfair treatment for female athletic student still exists. At every high school or college, young female athletics are still facing with the discrimination on the playing field. Women and girls just receive only 42 percent of the opportunities to play sports in high school and college even though female were half of total students.
Stereotypes, The hurtful Stigma Rachel Sandler believes high school stereotypes have been around for generations. Also there is a social hierarchy and the order from top to bottom is the popular girls, the jocks, and the nerds at the bottom. The reason she says these stereotypes have been transferred for generations is because adults who have gone to high school might have a similar experience and this why the social structure of high school has not changed over the years. This is a result of stereotypes passing on through generations It does not seem like there is a chance of the stereotypes slowing down.
Before reading this chapter, I never genuinely realized how many racially offensive comments I made or how many other racial slurs there were. Growing up in my household, not too many adults filtered their conversations, so some phrases I began to repeat were due to hearing them repeatedly. I was so familiar with hearing words like “gyp”, “whitewash”, and “light bright” that eventually started saying them not realizing how other people may feel. Even during high school, I was not as culturally competent as I should have been. Going to a predominantly white high school, I had a few encounters with prejudice people.
Growing up with strict, religious parents gave me a narrow perspective on life – that is, I was pretty homophobic and racist. Initially, my parents had planned for me to attend a private religious school, but I wasn’t having it and ended up enrolled at the local public elementary school instead. Here, I met people that gave from a huge variety of lifestyles, from super spoiled to living below the poverty line. However, we were all the same once we got to school and the more that I got to know my peers, the more I began to question everything that my parents had taught me. My friends who were followers of different religions exposed me to drastically different cultures than the one that I knew and so overtime, I became much more open minded
Growing up my parents instilled in me that I was beautiful and my skin was beautiful. It was clear to me that everyone else didn’t feel the same way. I went to a couple different schools throughout my life starting with a predominantly black school then a predominantly white school then a very diverse school and at each one I still experienced colorism. At the black school I was not liked because I was darkskin and my hair was kinky and I was just not as pretty as the light skinned girls.
In the Council of Vocations, the council members all look back at the things their citizens had done in the past, and looks for banal like characteristics, then they all decide what job they want the brother/sister to have for the next 15 years. Equality has had some trouble in the past for being precocious, and good-looking.. and was loathed by the council members, and all of his teachers, during his stay at the Home of the Students. Equality felt that he was too intelligent to have a life mandate of any other than, living in the Home of the Scholars. His teachers knew he was intelligent but, saw it as a negative, and dangerous impact on society. Equality belonged in the Home of the Scholars, and he knew it.
TRA debates and struggles are almost always about white parents gaining access to children of color, not parents of color gaining access to white children. Until the recent explosion of ICA, questions regarding TRA were debated almost exclusively between white couples trying to adopt black children. Given the fact that the majority of TRA 's are made up of "children who are not either black or white," the fiery debate between white parents and black social workers highlights the threat posed to communities and identities when the black-white color line is crossed. Today, interracial married couples are entering the adoption and race debates, and they raise many more questions about racial understandings and injustice. If a white mother puts her multiracial baby up for adoption, who is best suited to raise the child?
In his essay “John J. Macionis” which appear as The Twenty-First-Century Campus: Where is the Men? And this article show how the women have great social equality after long time of being not accepted in college. He describe who the women were not welcome in all the colleges or universities in United States in one century ago. Few years ago the number of women who go to college has increase until they finally matched the men. Moreover, the low income make more women go to college then men, and that because they able to find a jobs without needing for college degree.
My entire life has been me looking forward. Always looking forward and rarely looking back. Learning from past occurrences and planning the next; I have been a sure handed planner all my life. When I was younger my maturity of very advanced for my age, therefore I only had a select few friends. This helped me keep a level head and remain focused.
