The remarkable thing about these Radiants is that they are not the stereotypical heroes on white stallions; instead, they are “emotionally broken people. [They are] people who had been broken, but then instead of lying down and giving up, they stood straight, [and] shouldered the weights” (stormlightarchive. wikia.com). They are just ordinary people who were willing to leave everything behind—families, careers, lives—to fight for the greater good and sacrifice what the majority are not willing to lose. And although these Knights are fictional, they still serve as a central example of how the characters and lessons in literature I have read during my time in high school have influenced my life for the better.
My writing habits and practices have improved tremendously. When I was in high school and during my early college days, I wrote papers and turned them in without giving them so much as a second glance, no revisions or rewriting and no proofreading and editing. My papers often came back marked up, and the markings almost always pointed out grammar, spelling, and punctuation rules that I already knew. Now I find myself proofreading, editing and grammar checking which help me in my pursuit going
My ultimate goal has always revolved around English. More accurately, it has revolved around literature and the writing process. Anyone who has ventured into the mess that is my bedroom can see that I love books—I own over two-hundred them, ranging in authorship from Homer and Shakespeare to Orwell and Rand—but what many people do not know is that I love to write just as much as I love to read, perhaps even more so. Thus, while it is true that I have always known I would be attending OBU in pursuit of an English degree, it was not until I actually began my college career that I expounded upon my writer-oriented goals. Although I do have an immense passion for writing and literature as an art form, I’ve never truly wanted to make writing
I’m not particularly good at anything outside of my studies and if I can’t attain high grades, then I’m pretty much useless. I would be more lost than I already am, since only real goal throughout my life has been to get good grades. It’s a double-edged sword in my life. Grades are the reason for my stress since I’m a perfectionist when it comes to my work, but maintaining high grades is pretty much the only goal I have right now. If I didn’t have the goal to maintain high grades, I would just be lazing around doing nothing with my life.
I joined Intermediate composition to excel in my writing for my future. From this class, I’ve broadened my vocabulary and found new ways to check my pieces that I have wrote. I could always use more work with grammar because I have always struggled with that concept. I came into
My High school is the best school for me. In saying this I mean that my high school might not be the most challenging but it has helped me out in a lot of ways. With that in mind I have to admit that San Jacinto Christen Academy has not prepared me for college as I believe it should have. It has how ever made me a better person and who I am today. I am not prepared for the work that I am going to get when I attend college but I am prepared in a different way one that most people ever even think about.
“Be realistic Mariel”, “Are you really going to go through with the idea of college?”, “People like us never make it.” Those were words engraved in my mind as a result of some of my loved ones not believing in me. To them the odds of me obtaining a bachelor’s degree were too farfetched; a waste of time and money. However, my mindset never quavered; I graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Spanish translation and interpreting, maintaining good grades while actively participating in campus organizations and community service events. In fact, here I am today, applying to
My plan for academic success is to pass all my classes with a C average. Another plan for academic success that I have is to choose classes that best fit my understandings and personality. Also I would like to get my license as a senior and have a job. Another academic plan for success is to have friends, friends are important to success because if I have no friends I’ll have no one to talk to while I’m working on school work. As well as the fact that I’m horrible at all my english classes, it might be a good idea to get those improved.
The author Alyson Noel wrote such a marvelous novel because this novel has an amazing plot, enjoyable story, extremely well written, and the author used literary writing. All of these reasons mentioned here, made me read almost all of Noel’s novels. I would love readers to understand the reasons of what I have learned throughout this semester, and more importantly, what makes a person a good writer or good writing. Moreover, I would like readers to not only understand all the information available in this portfolio but also understanding the purpose of my
