Personal Narrative: One Quality Of A Good Nurse

Caring in nursing is very critical in order to have a therapeutic relationship between a patient and nurse. Most nurses choose to nurse as a profession because of their aspiration to care for patients. Caring in the nursing profession takes place every time when nurses have contact with patients. Nurses need to make sure that they aren 't there just to collect their paycheck, but to caring their patient. Appearance is what other people look patient might judge, the nurse by their appearance.

These procedures include NGT feeding, tracheostomy care and complicated wound dressings. With all of the procedures and paper works that a nurse needs to accomplish in their allotted shift, they can still manage to smile, be calm, and work efficiently even if they are under pressure. As a Medical Assistant, your interactions with patients will play a significant role in their overall experience at your medical facility. Patients usually interact with Medical assistants first, so their first impression of a facility, whether good or bad, starts with you. Your customer service skills will leave the patient with the overall experience of their visit. Not only should your interpersonal skills be used for patients but your doctor, nurses, and medical staff as well. Medical assistants work the central part of their day directly with patients so that you will need excellent customer service skills, patience, organization, assertiveness, nonverbal communication skills and a kind heart.

As a medical assistant I would ensure that the patient understands that this is a judgement free zone. I would also remind the patient that we are professionals and there to help them. Skin disorders are common, and no patient should feel embarrassed in a clinic or hospital setting. It is our job to calm and reassure the patient that we are there to Help. I would speak very calming to help calm the patient down themselves.

Hospitalized individuals are in their most vulnerable state and nurses highly impact these people’s well-being because of the nurses’ care. To do so, a nurse should have the right attributes and characteristics in order to provide an effective therapeutic care and build a relationship with the patients as well as the patient’s family. Being a prospective professional nurse, my own personal attributes and characteristics may resemble the qualities a professional nurse should possess in order to establish a therapeutic and trustful professional relationship with patients. The qualities involved are exhibiting a caring behavior when giving care, showcasing optimistic attitude and being able to communicate well with patients/clients.

What do I know about being a critical care nurse? I know that being a Critical Care Nurse is a social job and it involves helping or providing service to others. This job provides advanced nursing care for patients in critical care units, commonly known as the ICU. There are many different activities that happen while being a critical care nurse, for example checking a patient's pain level, monitoring a patient for changes on their current status, and being an advocate for the patient's family. I also know that being a Critical Care Nurse can be a very emotional job with some of the patients that come in.

Reflection Qualities that make an effective nursing leader are the same qualities that many other nursing staff and general public possess. Such as, the ability to support and empower their team members, be well organized, remain consistent with their expectations, and be able to communicate with their team. Support and empower the team members An example of this quality is a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) on one of the units at Wascana Rehabilitation Center (WRC), where I had one of my clinical rotations. This nurse would ask each staff member if they had any concerns during their daily huddles.

The career I chose to pursue is Registered Nurse. The reason why I chose Registered Nurse as my career choice is I love helping people. Making sure they are taken care of in every area from bathing, to cleaning, to hospitality. Registered Nurse is a good choice because you get to work with a variety of patients, and kids in the pediatric department and geriatric. Nurses are also very specialized in neo-natal intensive care.

For example, working on the physical therapy floor you will end up seeing only things that pertain to physical therapy. Being an experienced nurse at the bedside in critical care unit it is my responsibility to ensure that high acuity and critically ill veteran’s and their families receive optimal care. My experience helps me to practice in settings where patients require complex assessment, high intensity therapies and interventions and continuous nursing vigilance. As a nurse, we have to be caring and compassionate. It has to come from within. We have to use the knowledge and skills we have developed to be able to show support for our patients and their families. While understanding communication between nurses is important, similarly, communication is also important to the nurse and other disciplines. I was able to witness effective communication between disciplines that focused on the patients’ health. One example of this was pertaining to a patient in the ICU room. The respiratory therapist discussed the patient’s current situation with the hospitalist. The nurse I was shadowing used successful communication with the CNA on duty to help assist with the patient’s current needs at that particular time.
