NSU Razor's Edge Leadership Program My heart began to race. I entered the spacious lecture hall, opened the door, and before me were two hundred students glancing at me. Entering the class for the first time at Florida International University (FIU) presented unparalleled opportunities on my forthcoming journey as a high school junior. When I enrolled at FIU as a dual enrollment student, I experienced uncertainty in regard to my intended major and career choice. I took courses across multiple disciplines, yet I remained remote from the ideas presented – until I met my professor for General Chemistry during my junior year.
I have had many teachers throughout the years that have had a great impact on my attitude toward education. No instructor however has had such a huge impact in my life as Miss Mindy Sopher. I first saw her name as my academic advisor listed in My Pack Portal, or my online account at NC State. I had no idea what type of experience I would have with her. Last summer before my freshman year, I sent her an email introducing myself and she was quite impressed by my ambitions, especially becoming a “geographical engineer.” I couldn’t wait to meet her in person at my orientation.
This Texas Government course is my first online class and also my first Honors class in college. I am aware that online courses may require students to do discussion boards or group projects or any other assignments that encourage interactions among students. I expected to experience and improve my teamwork skills and critical thinking. Although this class was about Texas Government, I was looking forward to discussing the presidential election that was held during throughout the semester. Last spring semester, I took GOVT 2305 - the Federal Government- and found myself involved in discussions and debates.
Part 7: My Future: What I want to do in the future is go to a good university and study medicine. My goals are to become a pharmacist and marry someone with a good education and a good job. Also, my hope is that I can play soccer for the college I will be attending. Part 8: Commitment: In my freshman English class, I will work hard and turn in all assignments on time. During freshman year, I will get involved in multiple activities and work hard in all my classes.
n AP Chemistry, test scores weigh heavily on our grade in the class so they are not taken lightly. It just so happened that the Tennessee HOSA (Future Health Professionals) Leadership Conference coincided with the final days of lecture and review for the test that was to take place the day after HOSA members arrive home. My teacher specifically told me and a classmate, who was also a HOSA competitor, that we were not expected to take the test on Monday but rather one day after school. Since she had given us extra time, we both focused on studying for our respective competitions rather than the AP Chemistry test. This, however, turned out to be a horrible mistake.
My “supernatural aid” would come from all my teachers educating me so I am able to get into college and my parents who constantly remind and push me towards my goal. My “threshold would most likely be the transfer of my sophomore year of high school into my junior year. At this point in my life, I am slowly becoming an adult and taking on more responsibilities and starting to make larger life decisions. At this point in my life, I am passing into what will be some of the most important years of my life. My “threshold guardian: was most likely myself and my fears.
In highschool I was highly committed to a program called "Breakthrough" for my last three years in high school. Breakthrough helps first generation students go to college, starting to work with them in middle school. It's an amazing organization and helps the kids every step of the way, whether it be tutoring for a hard math exam in 8th grade or application help when applying to college in 12th grade. My role was to be a mentor leader during Saturday sessions. From 8am to 4pm, we would lead 12 - 15 students through activities to learn about college, or just work on important skills such as writing, reading and research.
In high school, my goals consisted of making the dance team, joining a foreign language club, excelling in JROTC, and having fun. My goals as a soon to be high school graduate consist of two major corresponding things: Attending college in order to access a degree in Elementary Education, and getting my certification to teach Special Education so that I can help those who have bigger problems than simply not having enough money. I’ve learned that helping those who have worse circumstances than yourself is one of the best feelings that a person can have. Dr. Suess explained, “You’re on your own. And you know what you know.
She put me in her college english class when I became a senior, because she said I showed potential to be successful, and I am so proud that I took that class because it taught me how to do more. When I went back to public school I joined the reading competition team again, and for both junior and senior year, I became captain because I showed the team that I was the willpower to read all 30 books within the deadline. Even though our team did not place in the top ten, each year we grew closer and closer, and my team says it is with the help of me. I think going back to public school has helped me. Even though a lot of people believe that Jeannette is not a good school, and that they do not teach us the necessary components to get us to learn, just like in Sherman Alexie's reading, but we have shown people that they are wrong, and that we have some of the best kids in the school around the area.
It was during my second year in highschool that I decided to take up the BS in Chemical Engineering program in college. What was I thinking back then? They say, us ChE students, maybe, were too young, too dumb to realize the nightmare that awaits us. Every single time I get to question myself why ChE, I try to go reflect on what was the main reason of me entering into this great of a challenge. I realized that from the very start I loved the environment.
After summer break, I returned to Westlake High School for my junior year, feeling as if something was missing. The decision to spearhead the creation of a chapter of the Science National Honor Society (SNHS) at my school arose because of my desire to establish a niche where high school students could express their shared passion for the sciences. The SNHS would provide enlightening scientific activities and opportunities for students, and the Science club would serve as a path to introduce members into the society. I initially proposed the creation of the society in a meeting with the Principal and Board of Education. Quite a few obstacles had to be overcome to start a new organization in the school.
Re: Letter of Recommendation for Joshua Whiting To The RA Selection Committee: I write on behalf of Joshua Whiting’s application for a Resident Assistant position. I believe Josh to be an exemplary student-scholar as well as a person of tremendous character with significant leadership skills. I met Josh in my first semester of college in our biology class. We were both Biochemistry majors so we got to skip Biology 1 and therefore were both new to this new world of college but already in a group full of sophomores and students who had been in college for multiple semesters. Naturally we gravitated to each other due to this aspect we had in common.
As a hopeful future undergraduate at IUPUI, I am eager to participate in the nursing program. Currently I am taking a class at my high school that will allow me to become a certified nursing assistant if I pass the state exam. Although I have only started this school year, I can tell that I have found my passion through nursing. With this simple goal, I plan to focus on my school work and dedicate my time at IUPUI. Besides the school aspect, I also want to participate in numerous extracurricular activities offered.
By the end of my freshman year of high school I knew this was now something I wanted to pursue and took every academic and shadowing opportunity I could to ensure this. Upon graduating high school, I enrolled at the University of Oklahoma with a clear-cut idea of what I wanted to pursue. I declared a major in biology and began my academic career. During this time I was able to continue shadowing, but experienced a slight set back. Like many individuals, it took me some time to adapt to the college lifestyle and my GPA suffered from that.
Eventually she graduated from Arcadia University in 2013. Soon after Reynoso formed a high school based on sustainability with the help of her friends. The school was meant to educated young adults with “sustainable skills, along with business acumen,”. Alyssa said in the article “The goal is to create project-based curriculum that teaches math, science, english and history through sustainable projects.” About four months after Alyssa had this idea she went over to Dominican Republic with her team and talked to the former President about their idea.
