Ever since I was born, my family has moved five times, and at each city that we move to, my family and I live there for at most four years. Then we pack up and move once again to another city. I currently reside in the wonderful city of San Jose, whose history is very vivid and exciting, being the very first civilian settlement in California to becoming the site of the first state capital to the third most-populated city in the state. Founded on November 29, 1777 by José Joaquín Moraga, who named the place El Pueblo de San Jose de Guadalupe, the city of San Jose was destined to become one of the greatest cities in the nation. Before José Joaquín Moraga actually travelled to the place to build the city of San Jose, there was another group
In the beginning, people came for the trees, the huge, majestic redwoods were what drew people here. In the 1850’s the gold rush in the San Francisco area needed more
Sacramento is one of the oldest cities in the western region of the United States and Sacramento is filled with rich history. The city and the capital of the great state of California dates back to 1839 when a man named John Sutter created a small rugged town that he would use for farming and business opportunities. John Sutter’s intentions and thoughts were to be given a Mexican land grant, however, as his small town grew, more opportunities started to rise. Due to the large amount of gold in California, Sutter’s town was officially established in 1849 and it was named Sacramento. When the city was first established, it consisted of small shanty shacks and poorly constructed wooden buildings.
Counting down the list from number 20 to eventual number 1, my heart raced as they called out the names. It was 8th grade and the rankings were out. This may seem like a rather pretentious achievement but when they called out the name “Andrea Campos” as the valedictorian of Copiague middle school. My heart skipped a beat and tears streamed down my face. Hearing my parents brag about me to their friends made me feel like my accomplishment was their achievement as well.
Mission Report by Jaydon Yuki Mission San Luis Rey de Francia was the last mission founded by Father Fermin Francisco de Lasuén on June 13, 1798. A mission is a place where people are taught about religion. Father Junipero Serra was a Franciscan friar sent by the King of Spain to spread their religion and claim land for Spain. After Father Serra died in 1784, Father Lasuén took over the responsibility for looking after the missions and founding new missions in Alta California. For a mission to be built, it had to have 3 things: rich soil, water supply, and a large population of natives.
In 1781 the Spanish had established the city of Los Angeles as one of the oldest cities in the Far West to help colonize the region. At one time this city became the largest center of population
Even though I was not elected to an office I ran for one of the more challenging seats. I ran for the assembly man for my city. While i did not make it I had to go into a tie breaker to decide who would represent the city of Portola in the House of Representatives. After discovering that I had lost the election I became more active in the city government and helped introduce a myriad of

Smitty was sick of the sour, stingy smell of the bait tackle shop. Local faces would pass through the shop, getting their usual haul. The lake near Cypress City would soon be filled with the boats of old fishermen. Cypress City was not, in fact, a city. It was a run down town in Maryland, too old to be of any use to the world.
Growing up in California, my whole life has been around farming and like many others, it’s how I make a living. It’s now been at least a year, living through the Dust bowl and many people have migrated to California with the hope of surviving this crisis. Keeping my crops has become a struggle and that's what most people including me depend on. I am lucky enough to be able to pay my mortgages even though I’m not able to keep the land with the help of family. It’s practically impossible.
I have lived in East Oakland my whole life. To the majority of people, the mention of East Oakland evokes thoughts of violence, shootings, and gangs. I was one of the people who believed in these stereotypes, and for a particularly long time. I was one of the people who saw Oakland as a wasteland, a place with nothing to offer me, and a place I had nothing to offer to.
The Day I Moved to Sacramento It was the last three days of school but the last one for me, I was moving away from San Bruno. This is a story about my last day in San Bruno. The first time I moved there I thought it wasn't very nice and stuff because it looked Very Ghetto Things were old and just trash and stuff everywhere, there were a lot of Gangs and stuff like that, but I think I was there for about 4 or 5 years. I went to a school called Parkside Middle school there was a 6th grade , 7th , and an 8th grade at the school.
In the late 1700s, the Spanish government wanted to teach the Indians that were living in California about Christianity and in order for the friars to teach the Indians, the government decided to build missions. Friar Junipero Serra was chosen by the Spanish government to build 21 missions in California which was considered the New Spain, but before the 9th mission was build he died. Friar Fermin Lasuen continue with the mission of building the rest of the missions. San Juan Bautista mission was not in their plants to build, but there was a big gap between the San Carlos Borromeo Del Rio Carmelo Mission and Santa Clara de Asis Mission. The Spanish did not felt safe to travel from mission to mission if there was a big gap, they were afraid of the Indians that controlled that territory and had not been taught about Christianity, so Friar Lasuen and the Franciscans decided to make the mission of San Juan Bautista to cover the gap between missions.
Located in the county of Monterey, it was the first city in the area to start using building styles in a new way. Salinas ' tallest office building is an excellent example of the “Zig Zag” modern. Along with this, residences and apartment complexes in the area kept this expression. According to www.mchsmuseum.com, “The Monterey County Building (1936) at the corner of West Alisal and Church Street may be one of the best Depression Moderne buildings in the state.” All of this was done with a very small town, about 10,000 people to be exact, and a poorly run city at that.
San Francisco got the reputation as a ‘barbarous city’ of miners, prostitutes and thieves who settled there. The Treasure of Sierra Madre, “Gold's a devilish sort of thing. You lose your sense of values and character changes entirely. Your soul stops being the same as it was before.” To the Native American tribes living ‘in the heart of the mother lode’ the gold miners were murderers, and the gold rush was seen as a nightmare as well as a mini
