At the beginning of this summer I reluctantly attended a leadership seminar that was held at my school. What high school student wants to come to school, in full uniform, during break to hear about leadership? Certainly not me. As a senior, my teachers urged me, with incredible persistence, to attend. I eventually caved and went. In the midst of my annoyance and regret, something from the seminar stuck with me: “introverts can be good leaders.” Upon hearing that I felt more comfortable being the quiet one during a discussion. Someone finally confirmed that effective leaders aren 't limited to gregarious and forceful types but are open to INTP personalities like myself. Upon co-founding a club called the Social Justice Society, I began a
All of my life, I have dreamed of becoming a leader. Always wanting not only what’s best for me, but also for other people. In a position of leadership, I will find success, while providing a work atmosphere conducive to victory. I will have the opportunity to make a difference, and my voice will finally be heard.
Through the National Student Leadership Conference, I will be marching out of my comfort zone and learning qualities that will aid me in becoming a better leader. In my school there are numerous leadership opportunities, from being class president, to being a house captain, to planning a school wide event.
This psychological assignment requires us to break a social norm. In my case, I decided to break an appearance social norm. I thought in something weird, but at the same time really funny. Therefore, I entered to my little walking closet and I took the most brilliant and extravagant high heels shoes that I found to wear them at a place when people usually used flip flops.
Max of 110 words each Leadership/group contributions: Describe examples of your leadership experience and share how you have significantly influenced others, helped resolve disputes, or contributed to group efforts over time. Consider responsibilities you have taken for initiatives in or out of school. I have been involved in my school’s Link Crew program since my junior year of high school. Through this program I have been able to help incoming freshmen adjust to the high school environment, and have gained skills in leadership and public speaking for myself. When I first joined Link Crew, I was not very confident in leading groups or talking to large groups in general.
By taking on leadership roles such as being president of environmental club and public relations of class council, I am a mentor to others all while sharing the same interests and providing opportunities for them to build their own character. Prior to this school year, I was fortunate enough to attend a weeklong event called Rotary Youth Leadership Awards, where I lived there for a week surrounded by young leaders from all over south jersey. In this experience, I learned that being a leader means being understanding of others and their situations. With this experience I was able to bring back what I learned to my own communities like environmental club. Not only do I have to be organize and communicative, but I also have to be a role model to members of a club by showing my own good character.
Over the last fifteen years, I have grown mentally and socially. I credit my growth to my ability to analyze and understand the world for what it is. Social imagination is the use of information to understand the world and ourselves for who we are. Possessing the quality of mind that can develop reason and the capacity to shift perspectives are the basis of social imagination (Mills 2000). As I mentioned in reflection one, I came to realize that my way of thinking is what helped me overcome living a poor lifestyle.
Before I start my rant I just want to say that I am Pro black and no that does not mean that I am anti white! I just have 1 question for my woke or pro black friends! Why is it that every single time a black individual chooses to start a movement or spread something that they deem positive or a possible solution, other pro black people shut it down or have something negative to say? That shit is so irritating! Example: The cease fire movement was met with comments like "So why not put the guns down everyday?"
Fact: “Over the next couple months, the peaceful demonstrations would be met with violent attacks using high-pressure fire hoses and police dogs on men, women and children alike -- producing some of the most iconic and troubling images of the Civil Rights Movement. President John F. Kennedy would later say, "The events in Birmingham... have so increased the cries for equality that no city or state or legislative body can prudently choose to ignore them. " It is considered one of the major turning points in the Civil Rights Movement and the "beginning of the end" of a centuries-long struggle for freedom.” Memoir: The death of Philando Castille happened and many people had been spreading awareness.
A leader is able to gain an audience’s attention because of their personality, morality, and how they hold themself. It is important for a leader to be organized, compassionate, able to compromise but also be firm on what they believe, and be a person who people look up to and aspire to be. I was part of an organization called National Charity League and this organization helped grow women’s confidence, public speaking skills, time management, and organizational skills. Each month, each class holds meetings to plan and discuss projects that follow the class’s focuses. This past year Class of 2023 philanthropic focus is children, cultural focus is international food, and for leadership we are focusing on self care and reflecting on the NCL experience.
Another thing about leadership is its an art. People can’t just become a leader, it’s inside of them just waiting for an opportunity to reveal itself. “Educators, health professionals, and parents all agree that as society grows more complex, young people are in greater need than ever for grounding in the basic values that determine character”(Hirschmann 12). This shows that the higher ups in
For this project, I interviewed Ms. Deborah Whittemore who is a licensed clinical social (LCSW) worker located out of Greenville, South Carolina. Originally, I was looking to interview a clinical or counseling psychologist, but unfortunately there schedules seemed to be busy. After looking for other types of psychologists to interview I came across a site containing local social workers. I looked through a list of the social workers and found a few whose credentials interested me. After emailing a few of them, I got an immediate response from Ms. Whittemore. After looking over her profile on the website, I chose her to as the interviewee.
Although she was a few minutes late, I arrived at the interview fifteen minutes early because I knew Mrs. Olivia Robertson was fond of being on time. "Sorry I'm late, I was just heating up my lunch" she said. We walked extremely fast to her office, sat down and began conversing. She never touched her food. Her office was big and decorated with pictures; pictures on the wall showed her and her husband along with their 2 kids.
To learn is to not only gain knowledge and understanding of a given subject but to develop one's character, delve deeper when finding something new and experience life. When something is meaningful it has value and purpose, but above all, it draws a person to have a personal connection with it because they deeply align with its significance. Learning through meaningful service is supporting an important cause that a person finds they have a deep connection with ambition and passion while building one’s sense of community, motivation and social responsibility. At St. John's University I will be studying sociology in order to further my involvement with social activism with the educational tools I need to make activism into my career.
The year is 3142, I’ve recently been released from rehab, which I’ve been placed by the military troops. I’d been sentenced to rehab, because I stood against the president’s request for the New World Order. “Son, you’ve disobeyed me,” said the President. “But father you taught me to stand up for what’s right,” I said. “I thought I could express my rights according to the first amendment…” I said furiously.
Most importantly, since the contents of this course are largely different from what I have learned in my major courses. I regard this as a rare opportunity for me to take on some new challenges, and I would like to take a chance to develop my leadership skills. Before attending this course, “leadership” is a word quite far away from me, and I only have some basic understandings of it. And I found out that most of my thoughts I had about leadership are very different from what it really is.
