In high school I was one of many who played womens basketball. I was a part of this team my four years in high school and loved every minute of it. This team was my community as it was who I identified with. Our community was non territorial due to the fact that we did not live in the gym. We did not all occupy a block on a street. Our community was mobile. We had daily practices in the gym of our high school, besides a game or two during the week. On game days we would pack everyone up and get on a bus to play in another city. One thing that held all of us together as a community was a common goal. Our main focus was to get to the state finals and win a championship. This common goal is what drove our team. It was a dream for every single
“Why can’t we get into our freaking offense!?” This is all I really remember from Coach McKendrick at halftime last year against Niles North in what was a tough night for our basketball team. Prior to this, we beat New Trier at home and then went on the road and beat the pre-season unanimous vote to win conference, Highland Park, in our first conference game. Before the New Trier game, our game plan was simple: we were smaller, but faster, so we were going to run the court and make this is a fast pace game. We executed our gameplan, and we won.
Everything is Earned My eyes intensively scanned the computer screen, looking for my name on the roster. I checked, then doubled checked, then triple checked… it wasn’t there. A wave of sadness and frustration overtook me, and I began to cry. I was cut from the team.
In the month of October, I was in attendance for two sporting events. One of these events was a male sporting event and the other was a female sporting event. When attending these events I made sure to analyze all areas of my experience. I paid particular attention to the facilities, the marketing and promotions that I came across along the way, and different details about the crowd during the games. While overall I had a pleasant experience at both events, I did notice some room for improvement which I will discuss later.
The buzzer going off, the crowd cheering, for the first time in school history, Trinty Clinton Township are state chapions. That team made history, acheiving far more than what any spartan was thought possible, but this team accomplished far more than a state championship. There has been Trinity greats that have made a mark in the Trinity basketball program history. I knew, this being my last year at trinity, that I had had mighty big shoes to fill if I also wanted to make a perminet mark at trinity. In this article,” In a Struggling City, Basketball Provides a Beacon of Hope” by Abby Gruen talks about how basketball is mush more than a game. Michael Coburn, the team captain of the Mount Vernon High School’s basketball team, explains how basketball has taught him to become a man. Mount Vernon has the second highest number of families in poverty. The town is made up 68,000 people and schools had to be shut down last year due to the amount of fights. Basketball has been the one thing the community has come together for.
The time I almost got cut from the basketball team.the first day of tryouts I didn’t come because I didn’t have my physical at the time.but when I got it I was there and lots of people were and only fifteen could qualify. On the first day all we had to do was shoot and show our form. But we did do something a little fun you had to get a partner and perform some moves on him. So the coach said “go” me and my partner which was Robert.
Insufficient Support Basketball has been in my blood since the third grade. I look up to the female high school and WNBA players. No matter the level of girls’ basketball, I was into it. As I grew up, I continued to play the game that I loved. But as the years passed by I noticed something: nobody was really ever at our games.
I believe in sisterhood. Being the captain of the team comes with leadership and great expectations. This particular leader was All- district, northeast, and state when she ran into a roadblock against a very important opponent. In the past year St. Fredrick girl’s basketball team wasn’t the best.
We sacrificed our time and efforts to push our teammates and serve our community. After three coaches quitting on the team, Elizabeth and I were left with broken hearts. Our unity as sisters and leaders sparked a flame to push
One of my best friends and also THE best basketball player I have ever played with, she showed me what it took to be a great athlete. Not only is she one of the best women’s basketball players in the country playing at UCONN, but she is also one of the humblest people I have ever met. I believe that she is another person that helped me find my passions for the game. Playing with her for 3 years was one of the best experiences for me because I was challenged by her hard work ethic every day in practice and got to guard her every single day. Being on the court with her for every practice made a huge impact on my game because she was such a phenomenal player to play against/with.
On my team there were girls from Arizona, Alaska, Washington, Illinois, California, and Colorado. All ten of these girls had come together to show what we had. Even though we did not know each other, we were all there to back each other up and to make each other and ourselves look good on the field playing the game that we love. Not only did I get to experience playing with girls from other states, but college coaches were coaching these teams.
The sheer shriek of the whistle sounded over the silence of the gym. “Everyone on the line; 8 and 30!” Coach McMahon roared from the top of his lungs like a mountain lion. We sulked to the line for the cruelest of all punishments; this is only the beginning of my high school basketball career.
I've learned that you should never give up, and always try your best. My story started this year. I had just tried out for a competitive basketball league and I was very anxious because I didn't know what to expect at tryouts and what to expect if I made the team. I was scared I was going to mess or do something incorrect. I'd been playing basketball since the 2nd grade, so I was an experienced player.
It was game day today. My teammates and I had a game against our rivalry high school Alta and we were pumped because we have beaten them every year since 2014. This year felt like we would keep that streak up and in motion. They had 6 really tall players while we only had 2. It made us all nervous for a while until we seemed to get over it.
Air ball— again. My form was lost, coordination gone, and so was my patience. I’ve stopped playing basketball for 3 months mainly because of school work and things going on in my life. I was determined to get my skills back no matter how long it’ll take. I started a game of basketball with other people inside the gyms court.
