Introduction
Do you know what your beliefs are or have you beliefs been molded into a “socially acceptable” version? In society in is very easy to be molded by the beliefs of others. I am going to take this as an opportunity to evaluate my heart and what my beliefs actually are, without any judgemnet from the outside world. How do these beliefs affect the care we give to our patients as a nurse? Values are essential to have and are what make each person unique and special. The metaparadigm forms alot of nursing care but each persons approach is specific

These four concepts all work together to form the meta paradigm, without one concept you cannot have the others. I believe that without human beings the meta paradigm cannot exist. Without human beings or patient needs, there is no need for an environment, health, or nursing. Human beings are to help one another because there is no one else that can do the practice of nursing. I believe that human beings are born a specific sex that cannot be chosen or changed by the parents before birth, or the individual during their lifetime. An environment is a place in which patient care is provided which can include a hospital, clinic, or a patient's home. I believe that the most important part of a patient's environment and the goal of their caregiver is making the patient feel comfortable as well as welcoming for the family. Health is a human being's state of wellness whether good or bad, which can be physical or mental. Health is often seen by people as being well, or good which is not always the case. Even a physically “healthy” person can be struggling with mental health that cannot be seen from the outside sometimes. Nursing is the act of fulfilling a patient's self-care deficit or providing care that they cannot do for themselves. I believe nursing requires a heart for caring for others. You are required to care for people at their lowest point and they will not always be kind …show more content…
I pride myself on being able to have my beliefs, but not force them or even have to make them known to others. I would say this has positively affected my journey in becoming a nurse by the quality of care I provide. Mental health, especially is something that I did not have much experience in before going to clinical. It has been a great experience for me to learn for about people who struggle mentally. There is one lady that I specifically remember from Medical Surgical clinicals in level 2. She was struggling mentally trying to accept her diagnosis along with alot of family problems going on. I stayed with her and was just a listening ear. Before I left her room I felt led to pray for this lady but had no clue what her religious beliefs were. I was nervous to ask, but I felt it was what I was put in this moment for. This is where I let my core value of faith come in to my career and I told myself that if she does not want me to pray with her then that is okay. So, I asked this lady as she is an emotional wreck if I could pray for her. She immediately said “Yes, I would love that.” In tears, we both held hands and prayed out loud for each other. It was the most moving moment I have had as a nursing student so far and I almost let my pride and embarrassment get in the way of God’s plan. After having this connection and allowing my spirtual and educational lives to collide I
Philosophy of Nursing Introduction Nursing is a discipline that is guided by philosophical orientations that create a base for the development of nursing theories that translate into clinical practice. McEwen and Wills (2014) state, “rather than focus on solving problems or answering questions related to that discipline, the philosophy of a discipline studies the concepts that structure the thought process of that discipline with the intent of recognizing and revealing foundations and presuppositions” (p. 6). Nursing philosophy embodies knowledge acquisition and cultivates professionalism within the profession. Through philosophy, nurses have gained knowledge and have discovered the true value of nursing practice.
My Values and Beliefs of Nursing I believe that nursing is focused on the holistic care of individuals and their families in order to achieve and maintain an optimal level of health, a great quality of life, and comfort. This is done through promoting healthy living, providing a safe environment, preventing illness, and caring for the individual
Nursing Metaparadigm Alligood (2014b) explains metaparadigms in nursing knowledge are human beings, environment, health, and nursing (p. 42). These perceptions are exemplified in each philosophy and conceptual model (Alligood, 2014b, p. 42). Nursing Philosophy The practice of nursing evolves daily from
Personal Philosophy of Nursing Shayna Brewer Northern Arizona University NUR 330 Lesson 1 Essay Dr. Mary Walton Personalized Learning RN to BSN April 28, 2023 Personal Philosophy of Nursing The choice I made to go into the nursing field was originally a decision of convenience for me. Out of high school, my parents encouraged me to go into a field that offered flexibility, stability, and would not require immense amounts of schooling or debt to achieve. My knowledge about healthcare was abysmal, aside from going to the doctor’s office as a child and an ambulance ride with my mom once as a 12-year-old, and my understanding of nursing as a field was even more so lacking.
Caring for The Individual: An Examination of Personal Nursing Philosophy Arianna Mailloux 400164224 NURSING 2AA3 Ashley Collins Harris February 19, 2018 As a novice nurse, developing and understanding of ones’ own personal feelings about nursing is important to help shape your clinical practice. Within this paper I will examine my personal assumptions, beliefs and values of the four nursing paradigms to develop a personal philosophy of nursing. This philosophy will be aligned with a known nursing theory and the comparisons will be discussed. Section I: Personal Philosophy of Nursing Person
My personal philosophy of nursing seeks to incorporate the art of conveying nursing science holistically with care and human dignity. The four nursing metaparadigm concepts are described in relation to nursing as a science and an art and provide the base upon which my view of nursing and my personal philosophy are derived. As a nursing student at UIC, I am well aware of the fact that the best outcome for any patient may not be improvement in health, but rather, a dignified death during the end of life care. End of life care includes a significant quality in care and human dignity.
The professional nursing values I believe are things you can be taught and some you cannot. Nurses are special individuals who ultimately want to care for and help others as much as they can. I agree with all of these values and believe some I will need to work on myself such as competence, illness prevention and patient education. Others I believe I have based on my experience I have already had while caring for others. Some of the qualities I believe I have include: caring, compassion, dependability, empathy, focusing on the patient- defining quality of life, having a holistic patient centered care, kindness, openness to learning, respect for others their dignity and worth and sensitivity.
The practice of nursing evolves daily from theories and philosophies that are proven by researchers, resulting in growth of the medical profession and advanced evidence based knowledge. Philosophies According to Alligood (2014b), philosophies are specific theories that focus on one or more metaparadigm concepts in a wide spectrum philosophical way (p. 43). For a person to understand philosophies it is required to understand the knowledge type, metaparadigms. Metaparadigm Metaparadigm is the vast perspective of a discipline and a way to describe a concern specifically to a profession or department (Alligood, 2014b, p.42).
My nursing Philosophy is characterized by caring, empathy, holistic care, and being sensitive to different backgrounds and cultures to all patients and their families. Recognizing that everyone is an individual and unique in their own way and not to be judgmental. As a nursing student, I believe the nature of nursing is rooted in the commitment to public service and making a difference in helping others during a time of need. I chose nursing as my profession because, I believe that we all have a purpose in life, and my purpose is having the desire to help others through care and healing. I first became interested in nursing when I was in high school; during this time my grandmother became ill and had to be placed in a nursing home
My concept definition of the Fawcett (1984) four metaparadigm in nursing is a reflection of the totality paradigm approach by Parse (1987). That a person is a unified whole, that consist of different parts which are interrelated to each other. The four concept of the metaparadigm was defined based on my understanding and knowledge, as well as through my past experiences as a patient, a nurse, and an individual. Looking back and critically reflect on my past experiences has helped me in making this reflective paper that has changed my meaning perspective (Mezirow, 1990) of what constitutes the person, the environment, health, and nursing. Most importantly it made me aware of my nursing practice that will help me to provide a better quality
Nursing Philosophy Nursing philosophy refers to the beliefs, values, and principles that guide a nurse's actions and decision-making. It is the foundation upon which nursing practice is based. Nursing philosophy includes a view of the nature of human beings, the role of nurses in promoting health and preventing illness, and the goals and values of nursing practice. It also encompasses the ethical principles that underpin the nursing profession, such as respect for human dignity, patient autonomy, and social justice. In this paper, I will define my personal nursing philosophy, identify nursing theories that guide my practice, identify qualities, skills, and values important to nurses, and describe how I intend to impact society as a nurse.
During that time I had the opportunity to observe the nurses in action and learn about the various aspects of their work. I was impressed by their ability to multitask and manage complex situations, while still maintaining a high level of care and professionalism. They were able to provide me comfort and support during that difficult time, and their work was highly appreciated. Overall, these experiences have helped me to appreciate that nursing is not just a profession, but a calling.
Lauren Null Dr. Price NURS 220 April 2, 2023 My Personal Philosophy The essence of becoming a nurse and caring for patients in need requires special characteristics and traits. Without obtaining special qualities and beliefs as a nurse, one can not connect with patients and co-workers on a personal level. I believe the most important aspect in nursing is the patient’s health, and the nurse’s health.
Nurses should be able to help people regardless of their lifestyle, religion beliefs, and cultural preferences that will help patient to feel their dignity and self – respect. My core values of nursing are kindness, honesty, patience, safety and positivity. Moreover, sometimes it is necessary to become a friend, an advocate and provide the support for patients. Nursing philosophy is the core of this profession that contains the necessary and useful components of helping people.
January of this year a nurse passed away in the neuro/stroke unit at sharp Grossmont hospital her name was Lorenzo, the newer nurses did not really know this nurse, but the older nurses cried their hearts out. The situation was so sad that the newer nurses started to wonder what made this nurse so special aside being their colleague. A new nurse in the unit asked the manager who was this person? she seemed special, and the unit manager explained to the new nurses that she was special because of her “spirituality and faith”. The new nurse later found out that whenever Lorenzo was assigned to work she would stop by the hospital chapel downstairs to pray and meditate, asking God for strength and wisdom to be the best nurse to her patients and
