Personal Protective Equipment Personal Protective Equipment, otherwise known as PPE, is defined on Occupational Health and Safety Administration's website as, (“UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF LABOR”) “...equipment worn to minimize exposure to hazards that cause serious workplace injuries and illnesses.” Within dentistry, PPE is known to be a healthcare provider’s gloves, eyewear, mask, and gown. It is also required for dental employers to “...provide appropriate PPE for employees, and ensure that the PPE is disposable – or if reusable – it is properly cleaned, laundered, repaired, and stored for use.” (Palenik, Charles.“Personal protective equipment:Looking back to move forward.”) While providing a definition and dental application of the …show more content…
Above anything else, it is important to first address the history of which PPE originates. Arguably it’s been mentioned in every article covering PPE’s history that the use of PPE was to have begun during the ancient times, although there isn’t much more to this statement to verify it’s credibility. In America, though, PPE officially and legally began with The OHS Act of 1970 which has been updated, continued, and is still often referred to today. This has created a monopoly situation in some cases, with certain manufacturers controlling vast segments of the market and keeping new entrants out.” With Mr. Fortune’s experience and words in mind, it becomes clearer as to why globalization of PPE is the most beneficial route to adopt especially for developing countries needing this equipment. (Ressel, Anton. “Winds of change blowing through the PPE sector.”) In the article “Globalization of PPE Manufacturers and End Users Drive Distributor Globalization” by Report Buyer, it reasons that the demand for PPE is based on population, employment rates, global economic activity, and legislation. The article also makes mention of that while the U.S. and Europe are in the lead as far as PPE consumption at this time, that developing countries have been participating in more PPE consumption as of recently due to globalization. Body Armor During WWI World War One was one of the biggest wars in history. So many young men lost their lives throughout the war. Some say that the more frequent use of body armor throughout the war would have saved hundreds of thousands of men. Though useful and heavy body armor was not widely used, there are multiple instances of troops on both sides using heavy body armor.
Health Risks As you may expect, quite a bit of a dental hygienist's occupation requires working with individuals' mouths, and it's possible that you will come into contact with a patient who has terrible breath, swollen gums or tooth decay. Dental hygienists have close contact with patients when performing essential cleaning and dental check-ups. Being in such close-quarter scenarios hygienists may potentially get sick and get infectious disease that is carried by patients. You do ordinarily wear goggles and gloves to minimize the dangers, however these precaution measure aren't 100 percent good or effective.

The first legislation I will discuss is ‘Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) regulations (2002)’ which is used to reduce the risk of injury whilst doing an activity. It can be used in any line of work, and you have to consider safety factors about it. When using personal protective equipment, they must check if it is suitable for use, if it offers the right protection for the user, or if it needs replacing, because if it needs replacing then it is not fit for purpose. The main areas where people use PPE is on the sports field or in a building site. For example a builder, as shown in the diagram below, is wearing a helmet to protect his head, goggles to prevent any dangerous objects getting in his eyes, gloves so his hands don’t get hurt when
P1 Electrical workshop - Electrical apprenticeship workshop Here I will be explaining the relevant legislation and regulations applicable to an electrical apprenticeship workshop. Electricity at Work Regulations (EAWR) 1989 this is relevant to electrical apprenticeship workshop as the employer will have to give training/instructions to the apprentice about the electrical safety regulations also the employer will need to make sure that there will need to be electrical risk assessment. Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations 1992 this regulation is relevant to Electrical apprenticeship workshop as this is essential for all employers to provide the workers with PPE therefore in the electrical workshop the employer will need to provide the apprentice workers with PPE that is made to be worn in an electrical workshop.
Being a Dental Assistant Dental Assistants can help change a person’s life in many ways. Dental assistants provide their patients a way to stay healthy within oral activities while also providing general happiness to a patient. Assistants work hand in hand with a dental hygienist observing, supporting, and caring for the patients need, whenever they need them. They work with tools, sit and stand long periods per day, and work in one of the dirtiest places on the human body, the mouth (Summary). Dental Assistants practice safety measures, just like any other doctor would, to assure the safety of themselves, along with the safety of their patients and organs that are being worked on from infectious diseases.

Dental radiographs are important tools in the diagnosis of oral diseases. It helps the dentist to employ appropriate treatment regimen for patient’s dental conditions, and plays a continual important role in dental practice. Advanced Dental Technology Maintains Oral Health People are struggling to maintain their oral health by not sufficiently and regularly brushing or flossing well enough. Now, if people do not care about or try to at least maintain their oral health then the dental industry could shut down. The reason being, that people do not care enough or do not have enough money to go to dental practices to get an oral checkup, results in having bad oral care. Not long after, people will have to deal with oral diseases and difficulties if they do not get accustomed to taking better care of the inside of their mouths and get the assistance that they need.

Needlestick injuries are injuries due to exposed and improper use of needles or sharps. The ANA in 2010, commemorated the 10th anniversary of the Needlestick Safety and Prevention Act, which improved protection against these injuries that expose health care workers to potentially deadly blood borne pathogens. These injuries, unfortunately, are still occurring today and far too often. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in March 2000, estimated that approximately 62-88 percent of sharps and needlestick injuries are preventable. Health care workers that handle sharp devices or equipment like scalpels, sutures, needles, phlebotomy devices or blood collection devices are all at risk but nurses are at a very high risk for being exposed to these preventable injuries which exposes them to numerous bloodborne pathogens especially deadly viruses such as hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and HIV/AIDs.
