Personal Reflection: My Strengths Of A Community Building

My strengths are that I am not only reliable, but I am creative and have a passion for building community. I can use this to implement fun programs like Bob Ross paint night, make a decorative, intricate hallway, and plan floor outings. I love any excuse to create a DIY project and finding cool events near campus like the Old Webster cookie walk in December. As a member of the scholars learning community, I would encourage my peers to do group activities like go ice skating at steinberg together, attend pumpkin carving night, and go to school wide learning community events. I’d use these qualities to create programs and find events for all of my residents to participate in together along with myself, creating a sense of community and creativity …show more content…

As previously stated, I enjoy creating community building activities. In order to make my residents feel included in our community, I would create monthly events that are open to all. An example would be for October, I’d host a scary movie night and provide popcorn. In November I’d plan a friendsgiving dinner and a night of festivities for anyone interested, and in January I could create a scavenger hunt. The possibilities for community building exercises are endless. Along with these events, I’d plan excursions, give out small care packages, and post monthly flyers for on campus and nearby events which would further build a sense of belonging and companionship between my residents. In my ideal community, everybody would hang out with and help each other. If someone was feeling down and lonely, I’d want them to feel comfortable enough to confide in myself and at least one other student. For those who feel disconnected, I would invite to lunches and personally remind and invite them to any events I create or know about. I would also learn their interests and recommend clubs that they could join, and even go with them to their first meeting so that’d they’d be comfortable enough to go on their own in the future.
