After 15 weeks listening to industrial leaders, group presentations on leadership and opinions from students both local and aboard, the general consensus one draws is that leaders and leadership are not a dichotomy. In the classroom, principles of leadership and team building may be taught while industrial leaders such as the CEO of second chance properties, encourage others to experience leadership first handed. I agree that by experiencing it first handedly, only then can one truly understand and internalized these principals.
Knowledge is not passed intact from knower to learner. The two brothers from BP De Silva brought along a unique take on this issue. They mentioned clearly that they know that they are not their father as well the fact that they should not try to be him. Though both of them are brothers, they are knowledgeable in different aspects of the family business. I believe that all of us are followers to a certain degree and that both knowers and learners who hold degrees of leadership actively construct knowledge. These people draw upon their previous knowledge, mental processes and experiences to integrate new information. Thus expanding their existing knowledge, influence and subsequent learning.
Throughout the course I looked at issues that I could potential in the future, two specific areas intrigued me the most. The first being family business while the latter being the government which is definitely a touchy issue.

Leadership, as per my understanding, could mean leading others to rediscover themselves by providing guidance, not through what-to-do lists, so they would reach the necessary urge to reach a better state personally and professionally. During Dorsch employment, I have noticed great potentials in my colleague; I convinced him to switch jobs from a drafting person to a civil engineer, by presenting the textbooks and resources needed, guiding him along the transition phase and by presenting, through examples, how easily could be the learning process and transition. Along my career, I lead my colleagues to produce integrated solutions, by creating the urge to know the answers of different what-if scenarios for their solutions; I bring textbooks and tools to convince them; I present examples of what should be done, the benefits of efforts done and the consequences of careless isolated solutions. Not only one colleague now is persuading her dreams by studying post graduate in Netherlands, but also she got an award to be distinguished;
Another thing about leadership is its an art. People can’t just become a leader, it’s inside of them just waiting for an opportunity to reveal itself. “Educators, health professionals, and parents all agree that as society grows more complex, young people are in greater need than ever for grounding in the basic values that determine character”(Hirschmann 12). Leadership is defined as emerging and supporting a vision for instructing by learning and communicating a visional statement effectively. Leadership exemplifies the art of leading others to deliberately create a result. In leadership, leaders display themselves as a guiding tool for others in this case for teachers. In leadership, it is important that leaders coordinate the effective management of resources, namely time, material and people, to ensure that they are conveying an effective teaching and learning environment.
1. My philosophy of leadership is about collaboration and teamwork. Respecting and treating everyone the same, is key to supporting a good team atmosphere. I believe when a leader puts effort and care into assisting others, then their peers and followers will naturally want to support them. It is also important for a leader to recognize, that advocacy must never become so important that the critical elements of leadership are neglected (e.g. policy enforcement, command support, etc...).
Leadership is a fiercely debated topic in our competitive society. As I come closer to graduation and prepare for the real world, I look around and notice that people are not really concerned with excellence but more so by how they can do the ‘right’ things in their career to be a leader one day. And I can say this because having attended at least 30 firm presentations in the past year for recruitment, students would not only ask more questions to senior executives but also seemed more interested in the kind of work they did relative to the work performed by the recently hired analyst. Two thoughts would often be running in my mind: 1. Why are there not more questions like ‘how to excel in the workplace as a recently hired college graduate?’
In developing this paper on leadership, I examined what was most important to me as a leader. As I reflected on my leadership philosophy, I thought about my experiences and the principals that I have learned through my own self-discovery and the observation of other leaders that I have had throughout my life. My leadership philosophy paper will focus on what leadership is to me, core values, and knowledge of others. Some leaders only care about the business and task at hand, some leaders care too much for their employees, and other leaders have a great mix of both worlds; those are the types of leaders to have in every company. Leaders need to be fully invested not only in the business to succeed, but they need to make sure their employees are taken care of just as well as the company. Within this paper will discuss the reasons that leaders need to be involved not only within the business, but with the employees too. Theodore Roosevelt described how a caring leader should be in the workforce.
Leadership has been defined in a variety of ways, there are multiple authors and theorists who have tried to define and understand leadership, all leading to varying theories and conclusions, but one thing that is universally understood is the importance of effective leadership and how someone with good leadership skills can impact so many people around them. (Kakabadse and Kakabadse, 1999; Yukl, 2002; Northouse,2013) The main components that have been identified to play a role in leadership are relations between leader and subordinates, interaction form between leader and followers, the influence that the leader has, the way in which the leader behaves and finally a leader’s traits. (Yukl, 2002) These elements that make up a leader, are then used as building blocks to identify the way in which each specific leader deals with its followers.
In fact, leadership is an art rather than a science. The process of learning leadership is a hand-on experience, which focuses on practice instead of concepts itself. This course provides me a chance to gain more insight about leadership and it helps me develop my new image of leadership. Through self-reflection and academic readings, I have discovered that I identify with three different leadership theories. During the first meeting in a Strength Based Leadership class, we were asked to write our leadership history. The class then began an ongoing exploration of various leadership theories. Upon reviewing my leadership history from the first class and synthesizing the information from the theories that were examined, I discovered that I most resonate with the Trait Leadership Theory, the Skills Leadership Theory, and the Path-Goal Leadership theory. These theories are leader focused, describing the process and techniques a leader uses to accomplish goals.
This semester at COSTAATT was one of the hardest I ever experience thus far, but I must admit that it was also one of those that encouraged me to really come out of my comfort zone and work harder than ever before. Leadership and Ethics opened my eyes to what leadership really means, I learned that people aren’t necessarily born leaders, that leadership (more importantly, good leadership) can be learned, practiced, and mastered. I also learned that I can be my biggest roadblock to my own success as well as the biggest positive influence. It do not matter the rank, position or status, anyone can lead anyone else. To me, it is hard to define what leadership is, especially in one sentence, but I agree with you that leadership is the action of leading others or an organization. I feel like it is when someone steps up and goes into the unknown as well. It is also important to mention that it is never just one single person.
Introduction Leadership is the art of empowering people around you to achieve a goal. As a leader I want to help others become leaders themselves. I firmly believe that by leading based on my values this will be accomplished. I have had many leadership influences throughout my career. Some of them showed me the way I wanted to someday lead and others showed me exactly how not to.
‘Organizations provide its managers with legitimate authority to lead, but there is no assurance that they will be able to lead effectively’ (Lunenburg, 2011). Organizational success usually requires a combination of both management and leadership. In today’s dynamic work environment, leaders are expected to challenge the present state of affairs, and to motivate and convince organization members. Managers are needed to assist in creating and maintaining a positive and well-functioning workplace. ‘Leadership and management are often considered practically overlapping concepts’ (Bohoris and Vorria, 2007, p. 1).
