As a daughter from a family of refugees from a developing country, I have witnessed and experienced how hard it is for outsiders to assimilate and adapt to our society. Thus, I care deeply about education and improving economic growth in developing countries. During the Khmer Rouge regime in Cambodia in 1975 that caused the deaths of over two million Cambodians, my mother became a refugee in America. In a matter of days, my family left the comfortable life they had in Cambodia to start all over in the United States, a country where they did not speak the language and had no ties to. With this experience, my family constantly stressed the importance of education and family as with these guiding principles, my mother managed to rise above the …show more content…
Growing up, I was taught that no one can ever take away your intellect and integrity and so both of those qualities are what I strive for in everything that I do and I hope that I can help others achieve. My background has guided my path and how I want to shape my future. From a young age, I pursued study abroad opportunities in Taiwan, Oxford, Pebble Beach, Boston, Milan and Montreal. Evidently, I have been on my own for quite a long time and have had time to be introspective and learn more about myself and what I want to accomplish in life. What I learned from my experiences abroad, is that family and relationships is what gives me the most joy in life. Also, that having the privilege to have the exposure of different cultures and meeting people from all over the world, gives me a lot of insight to be able to make a significant change in the world. Wanting to take advantage of the international exposure and network, I decided to double major in accounting and finance at McGill University. With that technical background in the business area coupled with a concentration in strategic management in social business and enterprise, I can use my skills to help others. To illustrate, I was able to work with the consulting firm McKinsey and …show more content…
I hope to start off in a career of investment banking to develop the network and skills it would take to be in more of a strategic role in a company and then pursue my Masters in Business Administration to transition into more corporate strategy opportunities in the social sector. Other than career goals, I hope to continue to be the caring person that I am and strive to foster stronger relationships with those around me. My vision for myself in my personal life is to be able to be a person that you can count on to make your day better. As Ralph Waldo Emerson once said: "The purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well." With these ambitious long term goals ahead of me, the quote from Emerson always helps me remember my purpose and how I can best contribute to
I was born in Guadalajara Jalisco and raised on a small ranch called Atemajac de Brizuela. My dad left when I was small kid, but came back when I was three years old. One year later my sister was born. Once my sister was born my dad decided to come to the United States because he knew that he had better opportunities here than in Mexico. Four years after that I came to the U.S.A at the age of nine not knowing a single word of English.
UC Personal Statement Prompt #1: Family is Everything If you don’t wake up every morning wanting to be the best, then you should just stay in bed. Becoming a successful person is formed by hard work and the people I love have shaped the future for me. Since my family has taught me that change can be certain and radical in adjusting lives, I would like to hold that capacity sometime in the future. I look for the ability to enhance my life and additionally the lives of everyone around me.
Being able to support the organizations I am passionate about through utilizing my education and skills, always leads to the most fruitful
I know that I have the potential and the intelligence to go after what I want in life, but of course all of that requires hard work and dedication. I am taking steps in my life now to better my future. I do believe education is key to almost anything and it will always be beneficial towards the future even when sometimes I don't see progress right away. I have many goals that I have yet to accomplish. I want to make a difference in the world, even if it’s a small group of people, I want to do something and be productive.
Many goals of mine manifest in education. Providing myself opportunities to
At the age of ten being raised by minority parents was very difficult for me at the time. At the age of ten I was forced for my English and Spanish vocabulary to be very proficient due to always translating for my parents. At that age learning both languages was annoying, frustrating, and difficult; however that experience shaped me to be a proficient bilingual nurse present and gain benefits by being bilingual. The benefits where the many open job opportunities with the increase pay. This experience also assisted to raise my daughter to speak and write both languages actively although just not the way my parents forced it on me.
To my surprise, after I turned seven years old, my parents decided to enroll me in professional tennis classes with aspirations of me becoming a professional tennis player. Likewise, many times during practices, I felt comfortable wearing my brother’s shorts because I did not like the clothes that girls were forced to wear. However, many parents had an issue with me dressing as a boy, and in quite a few instances, I was told to act and dress like a girl. Therefore, I did not feel comfortable in my skin because I was a child and did not necessarily understand why people were having issues with the way I dressed or acted. Likewise, since I was physically active, I liked to wear clothes that felt comfortable.
Economics: After my Careers class, I knew that my future career could be in the area of economics, but I lack knowledge and experience about working in these fields. I have always been passionate about current economic issues, and I stay informed by reading reliable sources such as the Economist that give me insight. This internship is an opportunity to apply what I've learned and investigate deeply into the underlying causes behind them. Additionally, I never had exposure to working in a professional environment, and this internship provides me with the chance to experience working as an adult. Therefore, this internship gives me an opportunity to explore careers in these areas and can guide me to a career that is suitable for me.
Giving a child the foundational knowledge and the skills that they will use for the rest of their lives is an amazing gift. I know that education is one of the most important things we can impart to the younger generation. From a very young age I have been interested in a career based around children and in education. I have 2 younger brothers aged 10 and 4. Knowing you made such a positive contribution to a child's life fascinates me.
I strive to gain knowledge and achieve higher positions in my career. With this interest I have been rewarded throughout my school life. I was excelling in academics and also extracurricular activities in school. During my Junior College my thoughts were a much matured and I personally turned to be more responsible through which I concentrated more in to academics which lead to me chose Information Technology as my career path in Engineering.
I have strongly encouraged my peers to pursue their educational goals and have supported several in their career pursuits. It is in my contribution to others that I find my greatest
But as life sometimes goes, this dream had to take a back seat to the need for a 9-to-5 job to pay the bills and contribute to my family’s finances, and my path was redirected when I was presented with an exciting opportunity to join a USA-based multinational firm specializing in technology-enabled translation and interpretation solutions. Ever since then, I have been working as a Localization Project Manager dedicated to help brands create multilingual content that is culturally relevant and commercially appealing, which equips them to expand their reach to target audiences worldwide. While I enjoy what I do, the global outlook and world-mindedness obtained through my experiences overseas – as a student, a volunteer and an employee – have deepened my long-held ambition of putting my professional acumen and intercultural competences to use in a setting where I can benefit society at large, as opposed to working in a purely profit-driven environment. Ultimately, turning vision into action relies on the efficient management of projects and operations, which is a skill I have honed over the years due to my occupation. The chance to build upon my existing qualifications and gain new insight into the complexities of the international system for a cause that ignites my passion, all the while delivering real-life outcomes that have
The story of life is a rollercoaster; one day you are soaring high with never ending joy, another, you tumble down quickly with gut wrenching fear. In the past, I have made three choices that have impacted my life significantly. This includes incorporating God into my daily life, applying to Mayfield Secondary School for the RAP, and quitting basketball for one year. While some of these decisions have filled me with an eternal sense of happiness and satisfaction, one in particular has left me feeling remorseful. I have sought God, first, because I was not completely happy throughout my childhood.
After I graduate college I plan to follow in my grandfather’s footsteps and become a Manager of Space Launch Vehicle Division at NASA. By going into this field of study I wish to create better rockets and space rovers, further explore space, and help expand knowledge to younger generations. Space is one of the universes’ biggest mysteries and it is up to us as scientist to obtain as much knowledge as possible while keeping the younger generation interested to continue our research. I have been mechanically inclined since I was little; building, inventing, and using my wild imagination to create different things.
Education is something that is different for every person. It helps us to grow, evolve, and become the people that we are today. While education is an obvious benefit for the advancement of society, there are severe downfalls of the current methods of teacher set in place. In my personal experiences however, one of the most interesting projects I was given the opportunity to complete was in United States history class. While the project was time-consuming, and often difficult, the fact that I was able to chose my own topic, explore a subject of personal interest, and make connections to myself, and the world around me had a positive influence of my education.
