The times I enjoy the most are when I am in my art class surrounded by color pencils, oil pastels, acrylic paint, pencils, and paper. I am proud to call myself not only an art student, but an academic achiever. Out of all the countless awards and certificates I have received, I am proudest of the art awards I’ve gotten. To this day, I enjoy making art pieces and being recognized. I was very young when I came from Mexico to live here in the United States. I started to build a better future for myself ever since I started school. Like most students, I took art class in Elementary school. It was a fun class that I found enjoyable and exciting. I got my first art award, called the Excellent Artist Award, in third grade. It is a certificate from the school that is awarded to those who have excellent achievement in Art. I do not remember how I felt about having that special award maybe because I was too young to understand what an achievement it was. Nevertheless, it was an achievement that I worked hard for because of the love I had for art.
Later on, I received my second art award: Art Achievement Certificate. This time I do remember feeling happiness and pride. I felt pride mainly because I received the highest art award a student could get. I realized at that moment the potential I had to be a better

It was an elective that I just had to have. I became more serious about taking art in high school as well because I was determined to have a higher education in art. I was resolute in taking not just an average art class, but an AP Art class. I purposely wanted AP so that I could express myself more. I made better art pieces because of the many mediums that were available to me. Ever since I started my AP class, I have worked on art projects constantly. I received my third art award in my junior year. The certificate was the Soaring Eagle Award. It recognized my performance in AP 2D Portfolio during my junior
Out of the three activities I participate in at Anson High School, the National Art Honor Society would be one that has impacted me the most. When I was first put into the art class my sophomore year, I tried my hardest to drop the course. The reason being is because I knew for a fact I would not be able to fully enjoy the course with my lack of artistic skills. After being in the class for a month and completing my first art assignment, I realized how much talent I actually do possess. A passion for art was quickly created over the course of time.
My best friend was the greatest role model at the time and she was amazing at drawing. Over the years, I’ve improved and it is now a treasured hobby. My schoolwork was covered with doodles in the margins of the papers, and abandoned sketches would slip through the pages of my notebooks. Many say that the art field is not respectful and maybe hard to get a stable job in. I wouldn’t refute as in some cases they can be right.
I 'm very proud of this award because of its competitivity. I had to complete amongst the top twenty girls in the state of Colorado to get this award. I was also elected as Senior Class President. In addition, I was awarded The Presidential Award that was given to me by the White House for being in honors roll for my whole high school Career. At the same time, I was leaving in Denver, Colorado by myself.
When I was young I wasn’t necessarily interested in art, but what I was truly interested in was color. The way color was associated with an emotion: yellow is happy, blue is sad, red is angry. I wanted to know why these colors felt these things. I would paint over my dull uniform to try and feel the same thing the color felt, and would be sent to the office all covered in paint for disrupting the class or mocking the assignment. When you’re young no one listens.
One of the proudest moments of my life came in 2012 when I received my Associate of Arts degree and graduated as the class valedictorian. I realize that for some people earning a two year degree may seem like no big deal, but the fact that I did it while incarcerated at San Quentin made it extraordinary for me. Before coming to prison, I had failed at my two previous attempts at junior college without earning a single unit. It would take getting locked up and separated from society, before I 'd start to buckle down. I was 33-years old when I completed my first Coastline College course in Geology and received an A.
For example, I have taken 4 APs including some very hard ones like AP biology and AP macroeconomics. A major accomplishment in my academic career was receiving Wells College Leadership Award, which I was nominated for by my guidance counselor because of my spirit, integrity, intellectual and leadership qualities. The award was an appreciable payoff for all the hard work I put in.
Last year I was inducted into the Honor Society in my high school. I have also been accepted into the Honor’s Program at UNI starting next year. I was just recently nominated for a Star Student Award for the Globe Gazette in English. Because of my success in and love for English, I’ve decided to major in English Education in college and go on to teach high school level English.
I had taken several art classes each of my high school years, enjoying mediums like watercolors, sculpture, ceramics, and creating mosaics. I developed a fantastic relationship with the art teacher, so when she announced a class field trip, I signed up. Our field trip was to Queen City Clay, a local pottery studio.
I am acutely aware of the how lucky I am to be able to virtually choose any profession and eternally grateful to the amount of supportive teachers and adults I’ve met that pick up where my parents’ knowledge falters. They have filled my environment with a constant emphasis on education and vivid art. Most of the teachers I’ve met during my academic career have been avid supporters of challenging myself by encouraging me to take rigorous courses, rooting for me and offering any type of help they can so that I can succeed. Art has been the underlying motivator throughout my life, serving to stimulate my mind differently from academic rigor and as an outlet of self expression in musical and visual forms. The works of Francisco Goya ranging to the entirety of Dada period art, a music taste spanning over a multitude of genres, clothing inspiration from i-D Magazine and thrifted DIYs.
My junior year, I was awarded the outstanding junior award. I received this award for active participation, meeting attendance, and overall class grades. I was so excited and felt so proud to get this award. As a senior, it was time to give up my office to a younger FFA member who could fill the position after I graduated. We do this at our annual chapter banquet where awards are given, and scholarships are given.
This small interest blossomed from a young age and has changed me in so many ways. Being an artist isn 't a title or label but doing what makes me feel okay. I paint to make others feel, I draw to make others wonder. It is an expression, even some can may the meaning of life. Although this has brought frustration and struggle, it is that what makes the journey worthwhile.
Jim mentions, getting excited about what he loves to do. Out of desperation, he joined an art class because of his love of drawing at a young age. When people started
My greatest accomplishment is being presented the Presidential Leadership award by Brigadier General Don Broome. The Presidential Leadership award is arguably the most prestigious award presented by Hargrave Military Academy, the award is a representation of achievement as a whole person and the pinnacle of success through Hargrave Military Academy. The award is not given out flippantly and entails a long process to ensure it 's presented to only the best. This process begins around the beginning of the second semester with faculty nominations. The faculty and staff nominate one individual from each Company.
Both accomplishments, especially my scores on the Advanced Placement exams, gave me a sense of self-confidence and faith in my ability to accomplish my goals that I had
