What career do you want to pursue in the future? Personally, I would prefer to get into a career that involves working with computers or on projects where I can construct things with my hands. My love for video games, robotics and computers have influenced me to focus in majoring in computer science or engineering. Feeling passionate in focusing in such majors made me wonder what possible careers I could go into after graduating college. There are not many people I know that have major or work in a relative field to my interest. There was, however, one person I knew who worked with computers and with whom I could ask about his experience. The computer teacher at my high school, Mr. George Schmidt. With the help of Mr. Schmidt, I got a little …show more content…
My reasons are similar to that of other students. I believe that by studying in computer science or engineering I would be able to land a well-paid job and be surrounded by the things I love and love to do. Computers, video games, and technology. However, in order to get into a well-paying job I have to make it through the challenges in college. In my interview with Mr. Schmidt I heard his experience from college. Mr. Schmidt has earned a B.S degree in both Math and Computer Science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign along with a Master of Science in Computer Science. According to Mr. Schmidt, majoring in computer science is challenging. As challenging as it might be the classes do become much simpler the more major related class one takes (Schmidt 2015). It sounds a bit intimidating to hear a teacher say something is tough but I can see why it might become easier afterwards. The more I learn about computer programming the more I would be able to understand …show more content…
IT career opportunities are significantly growing with most opportunities involving programming. Video games, mobile application, and software industries are highly grossing above the average, providing more jobs with the demand for educated and experienced programmers (ITCareerFinder 2012). Mr. Schmidt stated that there will be about 1,000,000,000 IT jobs by 2020 as the industries continue to rise causing the demands for programmers to upsurge too (Schmidt 2015). Many students who love technology wish to land a job at with industries like Microsoft or Google, but working as a programmer is not easy. In my interview with Mr. Schmidt, I learned that programming is a stressful and complex job. Programmers have to spend multiple hours on a computer, working days and nights writing tons of codes and fixing bugs. As a programmer, Mr. Schmidt spends too much time working he barely had time to spend with his family (Schmidt 2015). Since programming is a time consuming job it is considered a perfect for single people who would spend their time working alone or in groups to develop programs,
To me, programming seems to align with everything in my life that was lacking security, normality, and “syntax.” Growing up acquainted with PTSD has allowed me to push through difficult times and stay determined. I believe that a person’s future is not based on the opportunities and privileges given to them but rather, the opportunities that they seek and go after. Therefore, my unfamiliarity with the world of computer science doesn’t stop me from being optimistic with my future scholastic success. I want to excel in a male dominant industry and be able to be in the position to empower other young women to go after their dreams.
In our current day and age, we live in a world of near-unlimited access to information and extraordinary computing technology. A world of smartphones and online communities, almost everybody has some model of iPhone or Android. Best Said by the Pew Research Center “Overall, 84% of U.S. households own a computer, and 73% of U.S. households have a computer with a broadband connection to the internet, the bureau reported.”, indicating the size of the online world here in the US. It seems as if computers now rule the world, and this has interested plenty of individuals. I included a computer geek who’s now attending Penta Career Center for the Information Technologies Academy Program.
Some web developers get started even as early as high school, given the demand for these workers and the types of skills that are needed” (Picchi 2015). Since the pure skill of coding is more important than a degree a driven individual can begin to teach themselves the skill at a younger age then that of one requiring college in order to program. For this reason, a gifted programmer
My interests in technology did not come until later in my life; when I attended my first engineering and technology workshop. Back in the summer of 2012 I was accepted into the Rowan University’s Boys Engineering, Science, and Technology (BEST) Program. Throughout the event I was in awe and fascinated by what engineering had to offer. We built bottle rockets and constructed penny bridges, but what stood out to me the most was the hands on experience with computer programming.
The program’s rigorous curriculum transcends traditional coursework, providing challenging conquests that will enhance my intellectual capabilities. While I will be equipped intellectually, I would be hopeful to discover more about my field and get a better picture of what computer science holds for me. On a personal level, it emphasizes communication and leadership skills, professionalism, and many other
" Keep in mind that this was a time when computer science and software engineering were not clearly defined, and this lead to a lot of programming being learned through hands-on experience. This also meant that all
Ada Lovelace, the first programmer in history; indeed, she will not be the last. In fact, quite the contrary has taken place after 1837, as there now exists over 19 million programmers across the globe. Just as surmisable, I concur that my involvement and investment in scientific computing and problem-solving to be indefinite. Finite with Lovelace's inquisition of math, I involve myself in extra-curricular activities that will serve to aid me in achieving my lifetime goals: being a leader at Intel or NVIDIA.
My interest in the Computer Science major at Carnegie Mellon was first piqued while I was in the Microsoft Student Partners Program, where I met a Technical Evangelist from Microsoft who graduated from the course. I had heard from him how the nation’s best graduates of Computer Science were often recruited from Carnegie Mellon. Naturally, this keen interest sparked off by my encounter with him did not just stop there as I am now sitting at my desk writing my CMU supplementary essays. As someone who has been trying to find myself within the tech sector in the future, Carnegie Mellon’s vast ties to the technology world only serve to underscore its appeal.
3). Furthermore, “in 2009 there were only marginally more female ‘computer programmers’ than in 1972 (20.3 percent now compared to 19.9 percent then),” however, “ after an initial increase in women’s share of the occupation to more than one-third of programmers in the late 1980s, their share has fallen consistently since 1989” (Hegewisch et al., 2010, p. 3). A sad conclusion of the report is that “occupational gender segregation for young women, aged 25 – 34 years, is now stronger than it was at the beginning of this millennium” (Hegewisch et al., 2010, p. 13). Blau, Brummund, and Yung-Hsu Liu (2013) confirmed these findings through their survey that showed trends in occupational segregation.
Scholarship, leadership, character, and service are important factors in any successful high school student’s life. Through good grades, leadership experiences, respect for my teachers, coaches, and classmates, and volunteer work, I have managed to incorporate all of the necessary factors into my life. As a sophomore in high school, college is starting to get closer and closer. In order to get into a competitive college, good grades are essential. Nicolet is widely regarded as one of the toughest high schools in Wisconsin, and due to my heavy workload, one of my toughest tasks is balancing time between both my studies and basketball practice.
After carefully evaluating my abilities, desire to widen and reform my knowledge and aspiration to advance my career, I wish to pursue a Master’s degree in Computer Science at College. My goal is to work on the contemporary issues in the Information Technology industry and employ the knowledge to provide better solutions to the complex IT challenges. In the years to come, I envision myself as a lead architect designing systems which will get smarter and more customizable through interactions with data, devices and people. My whole life has been a multi-faceted learning curve which has prepared me to take the academic challenges of the graduate life.
Considering teens spend an average of nearly nine hours glued to a screen every day, according to The Washington Post, they should understand how their messages arrive before their eyes. Education is the fundamental necessity for comprehending complex ideas and computer programming languages are no exception. “In our tech-driven world, Hadi Partovi argues, computer science has become as essential for students as reading, writing and math” (Singer). Hadi Partovi and his brother Ali Partovi
There is a hidden elegance within computer programming that although difficult to describe, completely separates it from every other profession. The ability to use creative thinking entwined with logic as a way of bringing ideas into existence, while also receiving a sense of achievement in the process, fascinated me from the first time I started learning how to program; a fascination that continues to this day. My interest in programming first started with me teaching myself, by simply following online Python tutorials, before attempting to build small command line applications using what I had learned. Python became my language of choice for the next three years, and during that time I created a wide range of programs.
I don’t know why I got attracted to this quote while reading the book, but I felt sure that it will be useful for me to describe my intentions and inclination towards computers. This is the story of the student who fell in love with Computer Sciences while she was ought to be a Mechanical Engineer. So, this story started with one unexpected night of my late night studies with friends before an exam which made me to realize what exactly I have been missing. What will a girl with Mechanical Engineering background do to help an almost graduate in Computer Science in solving a code of
It is no secret that nowadays women are extremely underrepresented in the technology with no definite explanation why. Many popular theories are that women are not naturally good or concerned in technology, the education system is failing young women, or there are not enough role models. The issue of why women do not pursue Computer Science is a very complex issue with many variables, and an aggregation of these issues can push women away from the CS field and towards others whether for personal ideas, work flexibility, or even similar culture. These variables include: Girls being discouraged from doing math or told they’re not as good, perceived “masculine geek” culture, perceived anti-social career field, perceived lack of ability to help
