One of the most serious problems affecting society today is the wide variety of acute health conditions including cardiac arrest, heart attacks, allergic reactions, and contagious diseases among many others. These conditions affect hundreds of thousands of people around the world every single day, and I, as a soon to be emergency physician, would dedicate my life to be the person who helps patients fight through these conditions, and fight for better health regulations, as well as better education of healthier lifestyles so people can avoid many of these conditions. The field that interests me the most is called Emergency medicine, a specialization in medicine that has a big effect in society, it is the second level of the EMS system that treats patients ranging from simple things such as a simple infection, to a trauma patient, emergency physicians provide the care that stabilizes the patients for specialized care and in some cases even treat their condition. …show more content…
My dream of becoming an emergency physician started at fifteen years old, when I started watching a television show called "the untold stories of the ER", and as I grew older, so did this dream. Later one summer, I was given the chance to take CPR class, and I eagerly signed up. CPR is the foundation of emergency medicine, I was incredibly enthusiastic as I took my first step into emergency medicine, the BLS (basic life support) course covered many topics including helping choking victims, and cardiac/respiratory arrest victims. This course gave me the chance to learn the basic skills of emergency medicine which I have not yet needed, but if I find myself in a situation where someone needs help, I’m ready to use my knowledge in order to provide the sufficient care to keep that person stable until higher trained personnel
An emergency room physician performs medical tests on patients in order to diagnose conditions. Some of the duties an emergency room physician performs include writing prescriptions, performing complicated medical treatments and triage (evaluating patients' conditions to see who needs help the most). Skills that are vital to being an emergency room physician include having good communication, analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities. To become an emergency room physician you must go to medical school and complete an emergency medicine residency program lasting three or more years. Some pros to being an emergency room physician include having a flexible schedule, building teamwork and relationships, and having fair compensation.
EMS While serving as an EMT for Elgin Ambulance and Dodge Center Ambulance, I responded with my partner(s) to medical emergencies in the community. My responsibilities involved assessing patients on scene, performing interventions to stabilize their condition, and monitoring them during transport to the hospital. During calls, I would collect information from the patient, take their vital signs, perform bag valve mask ventilation, complete EKGs, insert IV needles, and administer medication as needed, including oxygen. Additional responsibilities included operating the ambulance, transferring care to the receiving facility, and completing documentation of each call. Serving as an EMT convinced me that a career in medicine was right for me.
Despite my young age of just 15, I had the opportunity to respond to any emergency and code in the hospital. I fell in love not only with the adrenaline rush but with the fact that I, a teenager, was experiencing in real life the events that I watched in medical-themed TV shows and movies. Because of my growing interest in the medical field, my mentor provided me with opportunities to observe the work of doctors and other medical professionals in almost every area of the hospital. Luckily, each experience in one area of the hospital lead to even greater opportunities in other areas, some of which few doctors receive. I observed several surgeries- including a gall bladder removal, an exploratory belly, and an open heart surgery-, small procedures in the Cath Lab, and the daily duties in the Radiology, Emergency, Nursing, Intensive Care, Physical Therapy, Pre-Operation, and Post- Operation Units.
For an Emergency Medical Technician the number one value of many values which includes: The patient as well as staff members is to provide safe and quality care, Professional education, national education standards and research which is essential to the consistent delivery of high quality. As trained and certified medical professionals, paramedics respond to emergency calls and provide immediate care to patients, often in life-threatening situations. The importance of Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) and Paramedics in healthcare cannot be overstated since they are among the first responders who provide initial assessment and stabilize patients before transporting them to hospitals for further
There are many different types of emergency medical responders, each with different levels of training, ranging from first aid and basic life support. “Emergency Medical Responders have a very limited scope of practice and have the least amount of comprehensive education, clinical experience or clinical skills of EMS personnel”
When people think of EMTs (emergency medical technicians), they often picture brave and selfless individuals rushing to the scene of an accident or medical emergency to life-saving care to those in need. While this is an accrete image of the work that EMTs do, it’s important to remember that this work comes with a wide range of challenges and hardships. EMTs go through many hard aspects when trying to protect their patients. Most EMTs have to jump through hoops while they are under pressure and trying to shield their patients from danger.
Since a child I was always held responsible for attending doctor 's appointments with my parents due to their language barrier. Surprisingly, I never felt that responsibility as a burden because hospitals intrigued me. The polar emotions of safety and fear simultaneously, fascinated me. With this awareness when I began taking science courses at North Shore Community College, I found that the subject also fascinated me. The components of liking the hospital and material, had led me to the realization that I had a calling for the medical field.
The Exploration of the Career path for a Paramedic As long as I can remember, I have always been interested in the unpredictable and fast paced nature of emergency medicine. So when given this assignment I knew that I wanted to find out more about a profession in this field of medicine. I found the idea of becoming a paramedic especially intriguing and wanted to find out more about the profession especially since I know several people who are in this profession already. I had the pleasure of being able to talk to Bobby Horn who has been in the EMS field for over 20 years, including working as a paramedic. I plan to look into several aspects of what it means to be a paramedic which include the overall work environment with responsibilities,
I started my career with the intent to be at the bedside caring for patients. In the past 4 years I have been learning but not a majority from books or in a laboratory but from human to human contact. I work for a safety net hospital; truly no one is turned away. I’ve helped collaborate care in a time of crisis for people that bring with them cultures, beliefs and values from half way around the world.
An Anesthesiologist not only controls the medication dosage but they also have to be monitoring the patient's vital functions during an ongoing surgery. If an anesthesiologist is not careful and focused, they can put the patients life in grave danger or more serious matters can occur during the procedure. The main reason why I want to be an Anesthesiologist is because I’ve always had a passion for helping people. Making a difference in people’s lives makes me feel blissful. In fact, being helpful runs in my genes, my
Investing my time in the care of my patient gives the opportunity to not only assist them in a difficult situation, but also to learn more about their diagnosis and the treatment, while comparing it to what we have learned in class. For example, I had a patient that suffered from Sickle Cell Disease and came to the ER during a crisis. Correlating this case to the books and the content learned in class, these patients receive at least 1000 mL of fluids, pain medication, and oxygen. Additionally, I had a patient with meningitis. This individual presented with common symptoms such as nuchal rigidity, muscle pain, fever, and chills.
As I take a moment to personally reflect over my life and career, I believe there are several qualities that distinguish me from everyone else. Being a continuous learner who is belief driven and relational is the unique combination of qualities I possess. I believe it is a combination of each of these that has blessed me to be influential and contributory in relationships and career opportunities. I absolutely love to learn and learning is something I do daily. Although, the subject matters may vary, it is the learning process I find most invigorating.
To the Department of Housing of Residence Life Services, I am pleased to be applying for the Returning Residence Fellow position 2017-2018. I first heard about this position back in January from former Residence Fellows and I am certain that my current experiences as a Residence Fellow at the Lennox and Addington House makes me the right candidate. I have a wide range of knowledge when it comes to leadership roles, interaction with people and I know the importance of a positive attitude when working with the Housing department. Throughout the academic year 2016-2017, I have had the pleasure of supervising an all-female floor.
Mimicking the way companies are run by business leaders, as a child, I would organize a “business” where I collect candy on Halloween, and use it to obtain a profit from family members and neighbors. I have always been fixated with the idea of owning a business that has the ability to create products or services that will make people satisfied. The appeal of building a new business and the ability to gain a profit introduced my interest to become involved in business. I would like to expand on my knowledge of entrepreneurship and gain experience in creating and distributing a product.
