For as long as I can remember, I have possessed a desire to help people, especially those who are less fortunate than me. This trait along with life experiences are what drew me to want to pursue a career in social work. I want to be available to provide support to people when they have nowhere else to turn. My experiences in social work have taught me to celebrate the small victories just as much as the big. I look forward to gaining skills and knowledge that will assist me with becoming a successful social worker.
Through work placement, I discovered my passion for social care practice while working with children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), although massively challenging but also satisfying. I also help me to understand the environment and the role of the social worker in that particular environment. I am also able to share my knowledge, values and skills to the practice setting. Field supervision also help me to better understand policies, programs, and how institutions impact the clients system as a whole. It is a result of the one’s compassion in order to give back to the community, and it is a significant practice for the benefit of not only the recipient but also the volunteer. Although people are compelled to volunteer in contemplation of helping others in their community, they are rewarded with prosperity in mental and physical health and development of new skills. The volunteer can expect mental health benefits as one of many effects volunteering has on one who regularly serves. In the article “Volunteering and its Surprising Benefits” it states, “The social contact aspect of helping and working with others can have a profound effect on your overall psychological well-being” (Segal and Robinson). Because volunteering has its own community, one becomes socially active.
Social work is a profession that dedicates its efforts to ensure the well-being of individuals and the well-being of the society as a whole. The primary mission of social workers is to meet the fundamental needs of every person, especially the ones with special needs such as those who are oppressed, vulnerable and the people living in poverty. As a social worker, I intend to use these core values such as service, integrity, and dignity as guidelines to my work to make a difference in the lives of as many needy people as I can. My main goal will be to offer services to needy people to help them solve and overcome social problems that they encounter each day in their lives. My personal interests and individual gains will come second to service.
I am a person who also have a strength about social skills. If I can improve my social skills even more, it will be make contribution to my future leadership.
