What does social work mean to you? Why do you want to be a social worker? When you think about yourself as a professional social worker, what do you see as your strengths and areas for development? My interest in social work started upon the realization I was the person my family and friends would seek out for support. I enjoyed listening to others and helping them through difficult times. Pursuing a career in social work will allow me to broaden my skills and support the underprivileged in the community. Social work is the platform that will allow me to improve the lives of others and transform their futures. Social work means supporting my community and discovering ways to educate and give resources to those that are in need. I believe my strengths include patience during a stressful situation, organization when trying to remain balanced, and empathy while helping someone through a difficult time. While my degree in psychology has focused on human behavior, cognitive functioning, clinical treatment strategies and social interactions, it did not cover social policies and services. I am hopeful the MSW program will expand my knowledge and help me to transition into the field of social work.
