I am an American who happens to have studied Japanese for 6 years, and is nearly fluent in it. I am quite a minority in America, as the amount of people who study Japanese is quite small. As I studied more and more Japanese, I became very interested in the peculiarities, or strangeness in language. Especially when comparing Japanese and English, which are two languages that might as well have developed on separate planets. One of the first things that foreigners learn in Japanese is the use of the word “です” and “だ”. We are taught how to use these, but we are not given a translation of them. Rather, we call these words “the copula”. “copula” is a word than English speakers, for the most part, don’t really understand. The first time I came to Japan, I asked a Japanese business college what the word “です” and “だ” mean. She responded with various explanations about the usage and politeness of the word, but never could explain the meaning of the word. I would ask again and again, “but what does “です” mean”. After a lot of deliberation and arguing, we concluded that the word has no meaning, and that it was untranslatable into English. It was …show more content…
UChicago isn’t a place where people just study. Its a place where people innovate, create, and do insane things. For better or worse, UChicago kids are weird. There are few typical people at UChicago. There are few “normal” people at Uchicago. Hence, there are very few boring people at UChicago. Everyone has something unique and creative to bring to the table. The level of uniqueness that exists at the University of Chicago is incredible. We invented Nuclear Power. We invented the theory of supply side economics. We invented carbon dating. We discovered REM sleep. The way that UChicago has changed the world are endless, and I wanted to be part of that
In astronomy they found that the sun was 300 times larger than the earth. As well as that the universe was composed of atoms. Also, they were able to calculate the size of the earth. In mathematics they came up with the value of pi, and were also known for the book called elements which was wrote by Euclid. In the physics area they invented the lever pulley and the force pump which came to be the steam engine.
1. What new vocabulary words did you come across? What are their definitions? Ambiguous.- having several possible meanings.
Science has greatly evolved over the years, there are new discoveries each time, and it’s a fact that right now we know a lot than we did thirty-five years ago. If today’s scientists were to write this, there would be a great difference between
For example, Hannah Herbst from A Beacon of Hope helps the world with science providing help to the world around her. She helped the world around her by making ocean water able to produce electricity to help developing countries. Likewise, Alexander Hamilton wanted to
I want to learn about more people who have impacted modern inventions. We both like to build things but his are much better than mine. Reading about Morgan’s life has deeply impacted
Walter M. Kinbrough, president of Dillard University, believes that “College, primarily providing an intellectual foundation for a chosen profession, is still a great place to make lifelong friends, meet a spouse, develop professional networks, and discover mentors. It facilitates intellectual, professional, and personal collisions, all of which have value.” Similarly, the purpose of college in the 2013 Disney Pixar movie Monsters University, is to provide a place for personal and intellectual growth, preparing students for success in their future. Monsters University has high values and expectations toward intellect and social abilities, and it is imperative for students to achieve these standards to be successful. In the beginning of Monsters
Fremont High School is a place to learn, and some students truly believe in this. Even though the school is in Los Angeles, which is known for a bad reputation, some students seek success. These students are quite inspiring, as this would be very difficult with the verbal abuse one would have to ignore. Kozol interviews a student who desired to take AP classes, but was stuck in classes that were not in her plans (720-721). Rather than let her take an AP class, she was forced to take a class on hair dressing.
A small amount of investment in NASA’s research activities can raise the national revenue. Also, by funding NASA we strive to make new discoveries that could change the whole outlook of the world.
From studying Haramiyavia clemmenseni fossils to finding the correlation between air quality and life expectancy; from spending a semester in Istanbul studying Middle Eastern Civilizations to learning Calligraphy in Kyoto, the University of Chicago supports ambitions to go beyond one’s realm of study. With a focus on an intellectual environment that broadens my studies, my brewing internal thirst for knowledge and ceaseless interest in
“Nothing can stop the man with the right mental attitude from achieving his goal; nothing on earth can help the man with the wrong mental attitude” - Thomas Jefferson. This quote is most notably upheld by famed astronomer and astrophysicist Neil Degrasse Tyson, who pushes through each day with the goal of not only doing his best for the good of science, but for the common good of the people. His achievements involving things like recording information found by the Hubble Telescope and other large scientific missions have thrust the country forward in terms of knowledge and innovation. After examining the life of Neil Degrasse Tyson, one could only admit the impact he has made on modern society because of his scientific achievements and his selfless desire to teach the general public not only to learn about space, but to be curious about everything, has been astronomical.
After this research experience, I hope to have a better understanding of my place in the world of
To this end, I put in attempts to define words that might be unfamiliar, to use precise phrasing, and to say what I mean without euphemism, slang, jargon, or otherwise confusing terminology.
I have now been on the Radford University campus for seven days. I cannot say these seven days have been the best of my life, but I assume they could have gone much worse. I believe to some extent that everything in life happens for a reason. My being here is no exception to that; I simply need to discover what that reason may be. Looking to the past I can see how certain experiences such as successful and failed attempts at communication, in addition to guidance from a teacher that I respect and admire, culminated in my being here at this moment.
