Animal Experimentation is a large controversial topic across the United States because of the harm forced upon innocent animals for the benefit of mankind’s health. The use of animals in laboratories is a common occurrence in the medical field, cosmetic industry, and in clothing production. Animals are used in experiments to test the safety, durability, and quality of many everyday products. In order to end these unethical testing methods, society must be informed of the harsh realities that include wasted profit due to expensive testing, unnecessary procedures that lead to inaccurate results, and the mental and physical abuse inflicted upon these innocent animals. To put this gruesome fact into perspective, in the lifetime of a mouse, devoted to oncology research, a range of two to four million dollars was spent on studying the positive and negative effects of certain cancer treatments. Although these tests could potentially lead to efficacious results, faultless lives, pertinent to the environment, are being taken. Society is under the …show more content…
These involuntary testing subjects are tortured in order to spare our lives and this is seen by many as brash and avoidable. In 1921, there was an extremely dangerous outbreak of the paralyzing disease Polio, in the United States. Although Dr. Jonas Silk founded a cure, the process of treating many of the patients across the nation came along with the lives of 100,000 rhesus monkeys. This brings up a topic of discussion and the common question of:“Are these acts of cruelty justified?”. Certain scientists believe sacrifices, such as the monkeys in the Polio case, are not only necessary but vital to the future of humans. John Pippin, a senior medical research advisor believes, “animal research is inherently cruel” and I believe several other scientists and activists would
Given that there are several alternatives at present, there is no logical reason for humans to violate animal rights in laboratory experiments. The use of traditional animal testing today shows an irrational, unjust, cruel act of human selfishness. Although I acknowledge most of Regan’s claims, I do not agree with his statement “…if that means that there are some things we cannot learn, then so be it. There are also some things we cannot learn by using humans, if we respect their rights”.
Animal Testing has been a very controversial topic for decades. Throughout history, animal testing has played a major role in leading to many new medicines and discoveries. Most of the world participates in these experiments, with the aims of achieving the most modern technologies. Animal testing needs to be continued to advance our science and medicines, and to continue to save millions of lives.
According to one of the largest organizations for social change with 4.3 million members: Do Something, the article “11 Facts About Animal Testing” states, “92% of experimental drugs that are safe and effective in animals fail in human clinical trials because they are too dangerous or don’t work.” Even after scientists force innocent animals into excruciating pain, the results are proven to be meaningless. This delineates how impractical animal testing is. By the same token, according to Pro-Con, a nonprofit public charity that provides research on more than 50 controversial topics, “Paul Furlong, Professor of Clinical Neuroimaging at Aston University (UK), states that ‘it's very hard to create an animal model that even equates closely to what we're trying to achieve in the human.’” This demonstrates how distinct animals and humans are and proves we should not use animals as a representation people.
These days, many companies use a variety of methods for product development and stability verification. One of them, animal experimentation, has been a controversial issue in the past until now and it has also confronted with various reactions in regards to its admissibility. We need to respect and cherish the dignity of animals. They are, like humans, are entitled to basic needs and their way of life should not be intervened and determined by human beings. Also, animal experiments are an act of looking at animals and ignoring their basic rights as living beings.
However, Robert Garner and Sarah Rose A. Miller who are opponents of animal experimentation claim that it is unacceptable because it causes animals to suffer. Two aspects of the arguments about animal research are about the use of laboratory animals and the idea of using substitution for live animals, and although the authors mostly disagree
That is true, and it is inevitable, but what we can all agree upon is, only 95 percent of animals use for research are not protected by the federal Animal Welfare Act (AWA), and those animals are, rats, birds, mice, and some cold blooded animals such as reptile and some fish (“animal-testing.procon.org” 1). Here is one counterclaim argument that is use in defense against the use of animals for scientific research, for example on the site debate.org, a user posted that “experimenters are willing to pay people a lot to be tested on in place of animals. Well why would anyone want to be tested on? Because they are in need of money, example: the homeless. If more people would be tested on in place of animals, there 'd be less poverty, less animal suffering, and more accurate results” (Emily16 4).
I’m here today to talk about a controversial issue that has been around for a period of time, animal testing. Animal testing using animals in experiments with different chemical substances in everything from medical to cosmetic to determine their safety as well as effectiveness . It’s a problem that has existed since the 3rd and 4th centuries BCE with its merciless methods and painful ways of abusing animals for human demands, but now it’s time for it to stop. Our technology has developed significantly since; therefore, such medieval methods of torturing animals are no longer necessary. Researches have shown that each year, over 100 million animals are tortured and killed in American laboratories alone, including dogs, cats and more; this shows how far out of hand animal testing have gotten.
Animal research is responsible for the development of asthma inhalers. Without it, this boy and thousands of asthma sufferers like him would be dead. Did you know that animal research has played a crucial part in almost every medical breakthrough over the last decade? Do you support unnecessary human deaths that could have easily been prevented by simple testing on small rodents? If you don’t support animal testing, you choose to let humans die over
Other symptoms of cancer would have to be induced. Since animal testing started to be conducted for the war against cancer in the 1960’s, deaths for cancer has increased 73% (according to
Many of us enjoy eating steak, chicken and pork, but rather not think about how it got on our plate, likewise we want medicines, antibiotics, vaccines, surgery and diagnostic tools when we are sick, but we don't care about how these treatments are made. In many cases the fact is that scientist have developed these medical procedures with the help of laboratory animals. From antibiotics to blood transfusions, dialysis to organ transplantation, vaccinations to chemotherapy, virtually every drug, treatment, medical device, diagnostic tool or cure we have today was developed with the help of laboratory animals. Each day, dedicated scientists study animals to find new cures for diseases and conditions that are currently incurable. Discoveries and
These experimentation usually takes place at Universities, medical schools, Pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies. As a result, ( introductory phrase) a study made by University of Harvard states that “more than 70,000 animals die each year due to running experiments on them.” Therefore from my point of view, animal experimentation should be reduced due to the drawback it has regarding to animal lives as it leads to the torture and suffering of animals. In addition, the final outcome of these experiments is not always
“The assumption that animals are without rights and the illusion that our treatment of them has no moral significance is a positively outrageous example of Western crudity and barbarity. Universal compassion is the only guarantee of morality,” said Arthur Shopenhauer. Even though this was said decades ago, it is still relevant today. This is what is happening in laboratories across the country: all kinds of animals are being abused in incredulous ways that consumers are oblivious to. The United States has no laws or regulations on how animals should be treated while being experimented on.
It is true that animal testing requires a lot of investment. Not only that money is spent on advanced technologies, it is also spent to pay for scientists’ expertise on this particular field. In order for the scientists to do their research, they need suitable equipment and substances. Every year, the National institutes of Health finances between $12 billion to $14.5 billion on animal testing as indicated in a study done by the government (Bastach, 2013). Besides, scientists need to consider the fact that animals need to be sheltered, fed and cared for to keep them alive.
Opponents however, say it is inhumane and cruel to use animals for research
There are people out in the world who don’t see the good things when I come to animal testing. They just look at all the negatives and think about the animals in the process of the experiments and researches. What they don’t see, is that how much they help us humans in staying alive and making special treatments. When testing the animals, they have contributed to so many cures and treatments, and sometimes the animals don’t even die. According to ProCon.org on November 2, 2017, “animal research has also contributed to major advances in understanding and treating breast cancer, brain injury, childhood leukemia, and etc.”
