Teachers have the most demanding and significant job on the planet: to equip the next generation with the information and lessons they need to lead our world into future success. It is foolish to believe that all students will be able to retain and apply everything they learn in the classroom. By using the world we live in to teach lessons through application, we solve this problem. These types of “lessons” are taught to any age group and are most commonly referred to as field trips.
Without reservation, many schools focus on STEM topics; yet, cultural studies deserve an equal amount of attention. A survey sent out to 60 field trip site coordinators with 63.3% of them responding showed that students acquired knowledge at the various field trip sites by clarifying false information about the content on site through experiencing it for themselves. At each site students became engaged and involved in research. Students exhibited personal satisfaction, enthusiasm, and appreciation of the site-specific content addressed in the field trips: all of which are examples of effective learning (Nabors 665).
A little over five years ago, I traveled to China with my family. This experience taught me about Chinese culture, history, and customs.
