College is known for being the place for a lot of things, but fitness is not one of them. When we think of college, we think of late-night pizza study sessions or going out to the student union to hang out and relax. All of this adds up, and the “Freshman 15” was dubbed for a reason! Students place health and fitness to the backburner because it’s not a natural part of college life as hanging out with friends on the quad, going to a free event, or a party. What if there was a way to allow students to see it as a natural and expected part college life? That is the plan I propose to promote a healthier and fitter lifestyle among students. This plan detail how students can utilize social media, college life, and a lot of the unknown free resources …show more content…
Social media, such as Instagram and Twitter, are already used as great ways to share flawless looking meals. Why not use them to promote positive examples for nutrition? Colleges can implement social media programs where students can take pictures and identify the protein, fruits, vegetables and starches consisting of their meal. Their pictures can be run through an analysis, giving quick feedback on the pros and cons of their choices. The healthier their choices, the more rewards. This program should also allow students the ability to customize “cheat days,” where they know it’ll be okay to have a couple slices of pizza on the weekend, or have an ice cream at a birthday party. The aim here isn’t to be punitive or to lecture—it’s to help students connect the dots and empower them to make their own decisions with all of the information they can get, without requiring them to do most of the tedious work of counting calories or calculating macronutrients. These pictures can be tallied on a weekly basis to a points system where students can earn a small reward or continue to accumulate their points for a bigger reward at the end of the month. The goal of this program would be to spread awareness behind eating healthy, balanced, and nutritious meals.
One of the biggest parts of college life students look forward to is to have fun. However, most people don’t think of exercise and fitness as fun. Exercise is a chore—and lots of students consider walking from one end of campus to the other as exercise! Unfortunately, that isn’t always enough as a lot of time is spent sitting and studying for hours. Students do take breaks to walk around on campus and visit at the student union, but that’s often time spend sitting down more. There is a way to make physical activity accessible at their student
This shows the impact on how important it is to make a priority in eating and making well balanced meals. Being able to see the history in how eating habits have changed generation to generation gives an insight on what we need to change. Many people such as Mark never ate a fresh vegetable until 19 years old. This shows that there is a big gap in eating balanced and healthy meals because of the mass production of frozen and canned foods. Mark Stated that, “it cut down on the variety of food we ate” (Mark Bittman 2007 Ted Talk, transcript 10:17).
Avery is neither a scientist nor a doctor. Although, common sense and substantial evidence can tell us the major causes of weight gain and psychological trauma can be attributed to students having to stress about grades, financial responsibilities, and one’s future. The validity in connecting students gaining weight from stress is the infamous freshman 15. The article “Freshman 15: College Weight Gain Is Real” by Jennifer Warner is a recent study that proves that nearly one in four freshman gain at least 5% of their body weight, which is approximately 10 pounds, during the course of their first semester.”
Being a student at Frostburg State University has allowed me to participate in a number of student organizations as well as leader positions and experiences. As a current mentor in the Read to Succeed program, which is geared towards helping young local students understand and develop fundamental reading and math skills, I have learned the depth and importance associated with maintaining an active role in the community. Such an experience has also helped me to enhance my own leadership skills as the current president of the Student Health Advisory Committee (SHAC). This student organization partners with the university’s health center, Brady Health Center, in providing and promoting health to students and members of the community. As president, I not only work side by side with the diligent members of the organization in advocating healthy lifestyle choices to students, but
It is unfortunate that students are provided with less funds than what are needed to live a healthy lifestyle. Nutritional food is always more expensive at grocery stores and students base what they purchase on price. An unhealthy diet is an easy way to put on weight. For example, a box of Kraft dinner for $1.50 or vegetables for a salad close to $5.00, students would be more inclined with the cheaper alternative putting their health concern aside. Post-secondary institutions also offer students to buy meal plans which give them a discount on certain fast food restaurants and cafeterias.

Jamie showed non video a family that was obsessed and coached the Mother concerning better food choices for her children as she was the culprit of their bad eating habits. This example assisted in connecting with the audience on how bad food choices contribute to obesity and an early grave. The audience continually reacted positive to his approach and at times
Students and teachers picked fruits and vegetables from the garden that were taken home in order to create a healthy meal. The Special Education class utilized this garden in order to create fresh salsa. Because of this success, our project was then selected to present at the FMEC conference in Washington, D.C. Currently, I am working on a fitness project for students that will help their overall well-being through a variety of unique exercise lessons and healthy eating guidelines. These exercises include Zumba, Yoga, Kettlebell, and Aquatic Workouts.
These classes promote health and team building skills. Physical education classes can help students maintain a healthy lifestyle especially during the many changes they are experiencing during
The first attempt and success to climb Mt. Everest occured in 1953. Since then, almost 4,000 people have been able to scale the mountain, but over 230 people have not been able to climb it successfully. There is a chance of accident or death when climbing this mountain or any dangerous activity. All people should should have the right to rescue services even if they knowingly put themselves at risk because there is always a chance of an accident happening, rangers are there to save people in danger, and there are rescue vehicles being produced to be used in case of an emergency.
Physical education, exercise science, and sports professionals all play a significant role in getting students, clients, and players to meet the goals and objectives of Healthy People 2020 and The Surgeon General’s Vision for a Healthy and Fit Nation. Having a healthy lifestyle starts at an early phase in life. According to the text, “Adolescence is an important age for developing health habits that will persist into adulthood (79).” With that said, in order for them to have that healthy lifestyle they must become educated about the risks of inactivity as early as possible. Physical education is an “ongoing process of learning” that is incorporated in schools so that students learn to use that knowledge throughout their lives and also learn to enjoy doing it.
Corcoran theorizes that “[s]tudents who eat regular, healthy meals are less likely to be tired, are more attentive in class, and retain more information” (4). Furthermore, Anderson assures that “when schools serve calorie-rich food on test day, students perform better on tests.” (4). Anderson’s claims of fact and claims of policy convey a persuasive tone as she finds ways to bolster elementary students’ physical and mental
Mental Health: An Issue Among Student-Athletes Stress has been an increasing issue regarding not only college students, but also student-athletes. Imagine the workload of any normal college student. Then imagine on top of academics, playing a sport which occupies the remaining available time within your day and weekend. This is the life of a student-athlete. Many student-athletes are able to handle the schedule and pressure that one faces in the collegiate environment, but some cannot.
The Freshman 15 is a thought that crosses the minds of most future college students, but most say that it won’t happen to them. This fear of losing a toned body after graduating high school bothers some more than others. They realize after high school there are no longer athletics, and they’ll no longer be exercising regularly. Also, when they depart from their parents house and begin to live on their own their eating habits change.
When looking for a topic to write for this scholarship I did not know where to start. First I was looking on places like Google, to find good health topics that I’m interested in Then I thought to myself what health topic am I am I most interested in that’s when I chose fitness. Due to the fact that fitness ever since I became a teenager fitness became a big part of my life. When I was growing up when I was young I was an overweight kid. I never went outside, I stayed inside the house playing video games and eating junk food.
INTRODUCTION: Attention Step: According to the article “Exercise Makes You Younger,” “Research shows that physical inactivity can cause premature death as well as chronic disease and disability" (54). Establish Need/Relevance: Nowadays technology and busy work schedules have prevented many people from including exercise into their daily activities. Many people think that it is too time consuming and rather not work
