Forgiveness is the action or process of forgiving or being forgiven. In the short story “The Seventh Man”, the protagonist of the story, the Seventh Man, has trouble forgiving himself for letting his friend K. in the hands of a towering wave. Throughout this story, although a long and treacherous journey, the Seventh Man learns to forgive himself. This is up for debate because at times, he can be viewed as responsible for the death of K. I believe that the Seventh Man should forgive himself for his failure to save K. Sometimes things that happen in someone’s personal life majorly influences them; other times world events have a lasting impact on a person. Many things may influence a life, but in my case, the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, an ongoing recession, and the legality of same-sex marriage have taken a great impact on me, my life, and my views.
We are humans and a majority of us have dealt with heartache, pain, broken promises, along with the joyous things like dreams, aspirations, and successful futures. Humans mess up and make mistakes, but we have to remember that forgiveness is a very prestigious and powerful thing. One reason why is forgiveness is not for the other is because in my experience, forgiveness is a situation where serious harm has been done to you physically or mentally. Forgiving someone is one of the best things you could do. However, for you to forgive someone, you must accept what has happened and be ready to move on. Forgiving someone gives them an opportunity to redeem themselves, and allows them to move on as well. By accepting the past, you might find reasoning within the mistakes of the others, and give you as better understanding of how you should act. Death, considered as today’s primal fear, is often viewed as the ending of joy, happiness, and life. However, death is not the end of life but the innate nature of life. Individuals should not fear death, but they should appreciate what life can offer them. Oftentimes, the value of life is only revealed when death occurs. While grieving for the loss of life, the pain at times can turn out to be a blessing in disguise.
