Out of the many reasons to be a Hokie, the top of my list has to be the heart of everyone at Virginia Tech. When I first toured, I automatically found a sense of home and I remember thinking to myself, “Wow, I could genuinely envision myself belonging here.” Secondly, I noticed the bond that people have with each other and I wanted in on it. Visiting certainly gave me that family feeling, especially while walking around and recognizing how everyone would smile and hold the door for one another. Being a Hokie also means loving service to others, which I hold very close to my heart. I have always volunteered at many events throughout high school and it warmed my heart to realize that I can continue on with serving others and leaving an impact, while continuing my learning. Consequently bringing me to my third reason, education.

The cost of going to college is getting ridiculous. If a student were to apply to an out of state public college in 1997 they would be paying on average $8,840; now at the same out of state public school they would be paying around $26,010. Are we expecting people who have little money to stop their education even if they want to keep going or be in a huge amount of debt? If colleges were tuition free or had minimized costs the economy would be better or could improve and so would the lives of millions of people.

In the United States a community college is defined as a nonresidential junior college offering courses to people living in a particular area. They are post secondary schools and are also referred to as junior colleges, vocational or technical schools because generally the course of study is for two years. The student can earn an associates degree or certification and/or continue their education by transfering to a four year college to complete their educational pursuits and earn a Bachelor 's degree. Community colleges started in the late 1800’s and have grown and evolved over the years. Today many four year colleges and universities have become so expensive to attend that many prospective students are opting for the more affordable alternative of a community college for their first two years of study where they can save money by living at home and taking classes that will transfer to a four year institution, however, there are students that cannot afford the lower cost of community colleges. As the month of November comes along annually, every single high school senior is forced to decide which path they are going to take after graduating. For some, it is easy to choose which college to attend and how to pay for it. But, for many, it is extremely difficult to figure out a way to get the funds for college. So, they choose the community college route. Community college is drastically cheaper than tuition at a four year university. However, it is still an issue for students to cough up that money. The idea of making community college free to any student in America has been a dream for low income students for a while. President Obama’s desire to make the tuition of community college to everyone in the nation would only make it difficult for students to get a free education, limit them to essential resources, and discourage students from applying to four year universities.

It is easy to think college is not worth the cost to become better, but getting educated makes people better, and happier in the future and sometimes even in better health (Leonhardt 25 ). Becoming a better and happier person is good for everyone. Even former President Obama says “‘Education helps us be better people. It helps us be better citizens. You came to college to learn about the world and to engage with new ideas and to discover the things you 're passionate about -- and maybe have a little fun’” (Procon.org). Learning and engaging in everything is a skill everyone should have, so like he said we should go to college to be able to do that. Additionally, education shows people to develop more intellectual skill and become more responsible (Pew Social and Demographic Trends). Arkansas Tech University was founded by act 100 of the 37th general assembly. On February 10, 1910 it was announced that Russelville will be home to Arkansas’s second Agricultural school. First day that school was held was October 26, 1910. A.K. Short was announced the school's first president. First day of classes at the Second District Agricultural School. There were nine faculty members and 186 students. In the spring of 1912 Eleven students graduate from the Second District Agricultural School, the first graduating class in school history. I have heard from my aunt and uncle (and I cannot forget to mention from the Princeton Review's of Best Campus Food) that the food on the university grounds is amazing, which is great to hear because I am what people would call a “foodie”. So food would be near the top of the top five reasons of why I would love to go to Virginia Tech, but, of course, the engineering program would be the real reason why I am applying. I have an interest in mechanical and aerospace engineering, and I know Tech is the way to go for a killer engineering program in my home state. One afternoon in late March of my senior year, I stumbled across a pamphlet in the mail titled “Student Living, Apply Now!” Curiously, I broke the seal and started to read through the pamphlet sent from The University of Arizona, where I would be attending school in the upcoming fall. I read the various names of the residence halls, looked at the provided charts that compared the specificities of each residence hall such as rent, room size, amenities and location. I brought all this information up to my room where I would put it on my desk so I could study it further at a later time. Later that night I mentioned my future living situation to my parents, after discussing the different residence halls I said, “There isn’t a living requirement for freshman at Arizona, what about off-campus housing?” After two weeks of research and convincing my parents, I caught my eye on an apartment complex right across from campus, where I ended up signing a lease. Off campus living provides residents nicer amenities and more privacy than the dorms, but it all comes with a price.

Why is college important? What can I, a young student, gain from a piece of paper that will someday end up collecting dust in my basement? The answer is that there is no one answer. Purposes for a college education could be listed endlessly, and of course, they do not apply to everyone. I personally have many expectations for my college career. Some of these are realistic, some are probably not. What is important is that I am setting goals for myself and plan to work as hard as I can to reach them. I plan to use my college education to push myself academically and to equip me with the skills needed to fulfill my dreams.
