Wilma Rudolph once stated, ¨The triumph can’t be had without the struggle. And I know what struggle is. I have spent a lifetime trying to share what it has meant to be a woman first in the world of sports so that other young women have a chance to reach their dreams. ¨Sports is not just about the money and popularity tag but about the benefits that come from it. Working hard for something can lead up to good things throughout life. Sports offers the chance for teens to not only play the sport but achieve goals they never thought could be done. Sports is known to cause many injuries: “Every year, more than 3.5 million children under the age 14 need treatment for sports injuries, with nearly half of all sports injuries for middle and high school students caused by overuse, according to research” (Wallence 1). Many parents say that sports are to violent and are causing to many injuries, because the teens are forced to over use their muscles.Teens are allowed a break time in the off season of their sports so they are able to rest their bodys from the work. Stretching before and after each practice and game helps prevent any injuries.On another hand, parents could also say that sports are outrageous when it comes to cost: “families with children ages 8 to 18 who play organized sports spent about $4,000 annually on baseball or softball, $1,472 for soccer, $1,143 for basketball, $2,739 for football and nearly $8,000 for lacrosse” (School Sports Cost Too Much For Some Families, Survey Finds). Families are having to pay so much money for travel sports just so their child will be good enough to play varsity in high school. The money that is used is for good purposes it helps by equipment or the cost for travel to have the chance to play better teams. Better equipment gives the teams what they need to succeed.
