By entering into this privileged class we gain responsibly that surpasses our own lives. We now have the tools necessary to create change in this world and it is our duty to do such. With our college education we have the skill set to do just about anything with our lives; whether this is the freedom to change career paths, to go back to school for continued education, or even retire at 40 if we are incredibly successful. However, this is not the case for everyone. Just because we are part of this “7%” of the world population that has a college degree does not mean that we should forget about the remaining 93% not within our privileged class. How easy it is to get blinded by our own lives and problems and not consider those of others. How easy it is to ignore the person experiencing homelessness on the street and continue about our day. Rich, poor, Christian, Muslim, gay, straight, college educated, and non-college educated are just a few on the list. One of the things that we talk about in choir is how music has the ability to transcend these boxes. There are certain aspects of life that regardless of your “box” that one will feel: happiness, sadness, doubt, anger, and fear are just a few on this list. Music builds bridges when our world wants to build walls. Just as music has the ability to transcend these boxes, as people of privilege we need to look to music as an example and open these “boxes” and view people for their worth as people and not by the label on the box which so often their environment forces them to wear. It is our responsibility as people of privilege to ask what can we be doing to empower these people to open the boxes for themselves. Providing them with equal educational opportunities, mentorship programs, and employment training are just a few that should be
