Losing sleep is never fun, and Daylight Saving Time (DST) doesn’t help. This practice really needs to go, and there are plenty of reasons why. The most obvious one is inconvenience. Resetting clocks and fixing schedules is extremely irritating, not to mention losing that comfortable hour of sleep in the spring. Productivity is also lowered because those few minutes spent changing clocks could have been spent doing something else, like homework. Plus, the loss of sleep reduces concentration and brain processing speed, meaning tasks take longer to complete. It’s estimated that every time the clocks are changed, the US economy loses almost half a billion dollars! DST just complicates these further, forcing companies to compensate using various means and costing the economy even more money. The best way to combat this would be to get rid of DST forever. Since the biggest problems with DST revolve around the shifts in time, an elimination of that time shift also eliminates those problems. Running permanently on DST is a bad idea, because wintertime activities can be heavily impacted by the lack of sunlight during the morning. Not only that, but waking up when it is dark outside is detrimental to your health, as the body adjusts melatonin (the hormone that makes people sleepy) levels according to the light level outside. Running on standard time doesn’t have these drawbacks, making it the better choice. Plus, running completely on standard time isn’t something new. In fact, Saskatchewan doesn’t and runs perfectly fine, as does Arizona, Hawaii, and most of Africa, South America, Asia, and Australia. Imagine getting used to waking up at 7:30 in the morning for school and ruining your future schedules all because your school decided to make school starting time later. Imagine in the future, you are late for every early meeting or late for work everyday and eventually getting fired. I say no to this. Schools should not bring back the starting time because of transportation, part-time jobs, and after school activities. To start, schools shouldn’t bring back the starting time because of the transportation and its cost.
Daylight savings time is supposed to promote safety like decreased crime, the reason for this was that there was more light in the evening. Daylight savings time made some things safer and some things less safe. Evidence from one of the sources states, “The test period was controversial; it ended after complaints that the dark winter mornings endangered children traveling to school.” (CNN 3). Daylight savings makes things start an hour early or an hour later which is especially dangerous for children who have to travel in the dark.

Daylight saving time first occurred in 1918 during World War 1 as an effort to save energy. In modern day it occurs twice a year, once in the spring and once in the fall, which helps with conserve energy, prevent traffic occurrences, and reduce crime. As many United States citizens know, daylight saving time has been credited to reduction in energy usage for many consecutive years.
Some parents in Seattle did not agree with the start times because of personal issues. Experts say that getting more sleep over night and going to school at a later time is better than going to school early in the morning and getting a couple hours of sleep the night before. “Some parents of younger children objected when bus schedules were flipped and their kids were put on an earlier schedule for next year” (Associated Press). The United States has used daylight saving time for about 100 years (Source A) in order to promote saving energy consumption (Source B). DST was first adopted after World War I, but then repealed a year later. Despite this, the US adopted a “war time” daylight saving time instituted during World War II. After this, many states adopted their own summer changes after the year-long shift had ended (Source A). In my mother’s sophomore year in college at Laurence Tech, she had a professor show up for class an hour late. The professor had not realized the time change, and wasted her students’ time.
It is true that DST can result in trouble “adjust[ing],” but this is only true for about a week (Source E). Of course, every person’s adjustment period is different, but recent studies suggest that it takes, on average, one day to get used to one hour of change. Again, not every person conforms to this average, but a majority do. Not to mention, if one goes to bed one hour earlier, while not a perfect solution, it can condition the body to adapt to the new sun schedule. Moreover, once our body adapts, the extra light has the potential to boost the overall health of the body.

Daylight Saving Time should be eliminated for the following reasons: it caused health problems that had to do with complex medical devices, it didn't truly save every or time, and it drastically reduced farming productivity across the United States. Many elderly citizens relied on medical instruments to ensure their health, but if they are not adjusted for DST, the consequences could be dire. Studies show that people do lose sleep from daylight saving time. Sleep is an important part of our health and not enough sleep can seriously affect our health. You would think daylight saving time conserves energy and electricity from the word ‘saving’. Many people claim it is helpful in areas such as “energy conservation, traffic safety and reduced crime” (Prerau).
Lack of sleep increases students chances of depression and suicidal thoughts. It can also potentially weaken the immune system. The school day is hard enough on a child and not getting enough sleep does not make it any better. School
Personally, I did not realize how important time zones can be and why they were set in place. I did not think that a mere hour would affect so many people. In class we have discussed maps and how they are an important tool to geographers. Certain places on the maps fall under different time zones, which have been thought out to help the people, and the places should stick to them. There are boundaries that show which area is in which time zone.
