Some may say addiction a isn’t a disease it is a choice, but addiction is really a brain disease. We can consider this because of how drugs can be so addictive it makes persistent changes on how the brain is functioning and structured. Yes addicts chose to do drugs doesn’t mean the brain cannot be affected. The entire process of addiction is an uncontrollably compulsive urge to satisfy satisfy drug cravings. Addiction is suffered greatly by misconception, your brain can be altered by drug use and can be very difficult to stop without medical help. Addiction is a disease and should be treated as a healthcare crisis. The misuse of opioids involve prescribed pain relievers, heroin, and fentanyl. A crisis that the United States isn’t helping efficiently. It is one if the biggest leading death causes today affecting the public health. The Federal law provides a medication that are meant to reduce opioid overdoses and addiction called Naloxone. Naloxone is for patients who are at high risk for addiction. Those who do suffer with addiction horribly aren 't always guaranteed to get this type of treatment (“Opioid Crisis”). Those who aren 't getting the help that is needed here in the United States are seen as criminals due to the decisions that are being made by being on drugs. Crime related to drug addiction cost the country $57 billion dollars each year not even including the victims. Addiction treatment reduces the percentage in the criminal justice system.
