Thousands of people in the United States each year die because of gun-related accidents or homicides. A weapon that has a powerful impact and should not fall in the wrong hands are guns. Therefore, the population’s access to them needs to needs to keep a more controlled rate. The ownership of guns should contained to law enforcement, government officials, and citizens who have met certain set standards, such as completing age requirements, a background check, psychological test, and informational classes. This would save thousands of lives each year and lower the overall crime rate within the country, preventing murders, suicides, and mass shootings. There is a significant relationship between the amount of guns people own and the crime rates of a particular year. Since the 1960s, gun ownership has declined in the US. Which has caused the firearm homicides to drop also.The correlation of these two aspects, creates a compelling result that should raise awareness to the fact of the matter. Gun laws in the United States should be more contained. To accomplish results, our country needs to reconsider and change how we regulate firearms in the hands of the population. As of now anyone can buy and own a gun at the minimum age of 18 or 21, depending on the type. There is a required background check when buying a gun (legally) but it is not in depth enough to raise suspicion of possible psychological factors that could cause the weapon to be used for a wrong purpose.
