I don’t post a lot on social media this is mainly due to the fact that I don’t see the need to shout my opinions, post kitschy food videos, or tell the whole world what I’m doing, but with the recent school shooting making a resurgence of political content on my social media I feel it has come time for my opinions to be heard. I may offend some people and in advance I apologize; however, I think that I need to address what has been on my mind for a while now. First of all, let me preface this by saying in my utopia there would be no guns; however, I recognize the importance of guns to some people and accept that as a fact that I am unable to change. I also recognize the importance of guns in the unperfect world we live in, for instance, guns used in war (what wars we are in is a separate issue I would rather not talk about), self-defense, etc. The problem is that there seems to be an ever-increasing issue of people going and killing innocent people such as the 17 people killed at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Now some people have been saying that we need more gun control to fix the issue of school shootings, and although I believe that gun control has some merit and does need to have some form of implementation I don’t believe it fixes the underlying issue. If we made it a goal to get a literacy rate of 100% in America, there would then be a significant decrease in almost all forms of crime, especially gun violence, because there has been a link established between the level education someone has and their likelihood to commit a crime. I’m not saying educated people don’t commit crimes because they certainly do, but they do so at a much lower rate than the
Since the Columbine High School shooting in 1999, there have been over 30 more school shootings resulting in 160 fatalities. The majority of these have been committed by one or more students who walk through the front doors and open fire. These kids have had easy access to guns, some of which were military style assault rifles. The frequency of school shootings since 1999 has risen and is consistently rising. There may be no way to stop them from happening anymore unless we institute stricter gun laws.
Anyone that thinks gun control is the answer to the killing that is going on is wrong! Nothing will change until parents start teaching their children right from wrong. Gun Control is too much of a political something you do to win a battle or to get what you want and failing. Politicians talks about the need to increase gun restrictions to stop gun crime, but new and current gun laws are designed to fail in order to allow certain people to own them and make unhappy because of not having a vote others.
The problems with gun control are seen the same way. If a teenager gets mad and decides to shoot a school, it 's not the guns fault that the person shot the people. The person just used that gun to commit the crime. The gun did not commit the crime. Gun control should not be changed because some people make bad decisions when guns are a big part of some people
At least raise the age up to 25 and make people take test on how to use a gun and when to use a gun and you should also be check medically for mental issues because most of the incidents the person turns out to be very sick in the head. I say this because most of the school shootings have been done by someone who is between the ages of 18 and 21. To explain this the Sandy Hook shooting happen by a 20 year old male, and the Florida school shooting was done by a 19 year old male. This left many people dead from the use of guns that each one of these male shooters were legally at age to
One hundred thirty one people have been killed in school shootings since 1999, the year of the Columbine massacre (Cox, Rich, Chiu, Muyskens, Ulmanu, “More Than 210,000 Students Have Experienced Gun Violence at School Since Columbine”). These statistics have made people start to question if gun control in the U.S should be stronger. When considering gun control policies, people should think about school shootings like Columbine, shootings in general, mental illness, and the data comparing gun laws and the number of gun deaths in the United States to other countries. Though the shooting at Columbine occurred more than nineteen years ago, almost nothing has been done to curb gun violence. Even though the perpetrators, Dylan Klebold and Eric
Gun control is what restricts people from buying and using guns, but these laws are not strengthened at the extent they need to be strengthened. This leads to many people getting these guns and using them to cause mass shootings all over the U.S. For example, according to the Council on Foreign Relationship, a news article that covers major world issues, in 2017, mass shootings at a music festival in Las Vegas and at a church near San Antonio have rekindled the gun control debate (“U.S. Gun Policy: Global Comparisons”). The fact that gun control is still not tightened is a huge margin and error, and still causes mass shootings as we just covered. Many people have said that we should not allow guns to be purchased, which would seem like the logical option. However, according to the same source, Council on Foreign Relationship, some states, such as Idaho, Alaska, and Kansas, have passed various laws attempting to nullify
The problem with gun violence in schools has existed for years, and something should be done to eliminate the problem that endangers students who attend schools every day. One recent incident with gun violence in schools occurred at Sandy Hook Elementary School where several young children were killed and many others injured (Elliott 529). Also, a bombing incident in 1927 killed thirty-seven children and was likely the start of school gun violence (Elliott 529). Children, who attend schools, sometimes do not feel safe because of the problem with gun
Although most of us are not physically involved, our nation itself is highly affected by these incidents. Every school shootings come with a political debate between gun violence and mental health and arguing which side to blame. Whether it is because of guns, mental health, or the school’s security itself something needs to be done to limit these horrid
Regulating guns will not stop all of the killings that are occurring in America, and there are better ways to cease the killings than regulating guns. Body Paragraph One: Topic Sentence: Regulating mental health will be more effective in ceasing killings with guns than regulating guns. In an analysis provided, 22 percent of the perpetrators of 235 mass killing, could be considered mentally ill, many of which were carried out with firearms (Qui). Almost 25% of mass shooting killers are being considered mentally ill
In America, we face a unique predicament. This is unique because the rest of the world does not face this problem on such a large scale. Guns are so accessible to the public that many people own large amounts of guns and ammunition without a logical reason as to why they would need such a large amount. Debates about gun violence often focus on the number of guns that are in circulation. However, the number of guns is not the only source of America’s gun epidemic.
Gun control has been a controversial issue for years and numerous solutions have been proposed and enacted. The debate sparked after tragic civilian attacks, like school shootings. An example, is the tragedy in 1999 at Columbine High School. Two teens attacked the school, killing 13 people and wounding more than 20 others before killing themselves. Following this attack, numerous solutions have been argued and purposed.
Ever since the inception of this country 240 years ago, guns have been an integral part of the American identity; a sense of lawlessness, individualism, personal autonomy and freedom. They were the tools that liberated us, and gave us independence over a tyrannical, unrepresentative empire. However, in more recent years, these tools have been used more and more frequently in mass shootings, some of which are occurring at schools, targeting teachers and children. Since the infamous shooting at Columbine High School 19 years ago, we have had several shootings at schools, and we tend to get “thoughts and prayers”, a gesture with good intentions, but little actual progress made. This problem can be contributed to the increasing power of guns, and a lack of mental health coverage, gun
Only 3 months into 2018 there have been over 10 shootings on a school campus. So in light of the most recent school shooting that took 17 lives in Florida many ask, should the government put stricter laws on guns? There are many different opinions on this topic considering the circumstances at hand.some believe that guns should be easier to obtain others believe they should be much harder to get your hands on, there are people who think guns should be just straight up banned. If the government put stricter gun laws on firearms then of course it would be harder to get get them. But for someone who is willing to take others lives they could easily get them illegally by means of purchasing them illegally or possibly stealing them, or in most cases if a parent has a firearm a child or whoever could easily get to that firearm.
Problem Solution Paper 95% of people think that america needs stricter gun control laws, yet the amount of shootings in the past years has risen exponentially. Gun violence is a serious problem and the people of the United States have wanted to solve this problem this for a long time. If people feel scared to go to school (which should be a safe learning environment for all children and all ages) that is a problem, and it needs to be solved, or at the very least put in barriers to deal with the mental disabilities and amount of guns associated with this problem. There has been an exponential rise in shootings in America since the 20th century. In the 20th century there were 226 shootings, in the first 18 years of the 21st century there have been 211 shootings.
"In 1990, handguns were used to kill approximately 48 people in Japan, 8 in Great Britain, 34 in Switzerland, 52 in Canada, 58 in Israel, 42 in West Germany and 10,728 in the United States”. For many years, America has been regarded as one of the world’s most perilous and ferocious countries in the world. The death rate caused by active gun shooters in the US is extraordinary: “since 1968, more Americans have died from gunfire than died in … all the wars of this country 's history”. Hence why public ownership of guns should be abolished in the USA. Can you imagine to what extent the death rate in America has increased by now?
