Homelessness is an individual without permanent housing who may live on the streets; or in any other unstable or non-permanent situation. Why do people not help? The money may be misused, mental illness, or their concern that donations may lead them to rely on us. Some reasons that a person would not help the homeless is that the homeless are humans who deserve a place to sleep, feel good about themselves, or the person would hope for a better future. Furthermore all of them should be treated with respect because they are humans too. With a good amount of homeless people, “some might be really nice people in desperate need of someone to give them a chance” (Davis). They could be a very nice person and just need one person to give them a chance and that could make their day. Some Christians believe that everyone has a responsibility to help the homeless and give them a place to stay. The Catechism of the Catholic Church “Love for the poor is even one of the motives for the duty of working so as to be able to give to those in need." (CCC 2444). The Church encourages that everyone helps the homeless so everyone can be closer to God. Almost everyone has seen a man or woman begging for money at the corner of a highway intersection. A sign usually reads “homeless, need food,” but what brings so many of these people to the corner of a street is quite a controversial topic. Middle-class citizens may lose their job and their home. Similarly, a hardworking citizen may lose his or her apartment due to a new owner who enforces a higher rent. Homelessness can affect anyone, even the middle-class, without the need for drugs and alcohol.

The issue of homelessness in America has been evident since the early 1600’s. Across the country men, women and children spend their nights on the streets not knowing when or if they will ever find a permanent home. States and federal officials or city councils have tried to alleviate or at least reduce the number of homeless over the last several decades at a city, state or national level but it continues to be an ongoing problem. There is a multitude of factors that account for the growing homeless population that affects each state in the country differently. Homelessness has been on a constant rise in America since 2016 with chronic homelessness rising at a much more rapid rate over these past years. With things getting more expensive it is becoming a bigger issue and it needs to be addressed. Don’t treat the homeless as if they were invisible. Acknowledge them by speaking and showing them respect regardless of what they may look like. There are different ways to help like donating non- perishable items, clothing, coats, blankets, working in food banks, getting job fairs to visit the community or even just passing out a bottle of water. We could also provide care packages that include shampoo, body wash, deodorant, a hairbrush, toothpaste, a toothbrush and five dollars for them to buy something of their choice or even just treating them to a meal. These are just few of many items that we could donate to help the shelters.
