2 March 2018 Legalizing Marijuana When will marijuana be legalized just like alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs? In this modern day, people are smoking marijuana like never before they don’t care if it’s not legalized. Many people break the law because of marijuana, why not just legalize and make it less of a problem? If they legalize it they can make the same law with alcohol, where you can’t buy it until you’re 21 years old. Alcohol has been proven that it is more dangerous than marijuana, there have been lots of accidents due to drunk driving and there haven’t really been any accidents with people smoking pot while driving. A study in 2009 by U.S. Department of Health and Human Studies published that 69.7 million Americans are current users of tobacco products, 15 million Americans abuse alcohol, and only 4.2 million Americans abuse Marijuana. “1,000 people every day die from smoking-related illnesses, 550 die from alcohol-related accidents and diseases, and less than 20 dies of drug-related causes” (marijuanaToday.com). This proves that alcohol and tobacco are more dangerous than marijuana but yet they are legal and marijuana is not. Marijuana has been here since the 1800s and it was legalized at some point back then but for some reason, it became illegal, what’s wrong with it being legalized just how it was back then. Reasons, why marijuana should be a legal drug, is because the addictive potential it can have on people,
Legalizing a drug that’s been illegal for decades seems intimidating and nerving but if we instead focus on all the good that comes from legalization, we just may be taking a step towards the right
Finally, marijuana should not be legalized because it is a big safety issue for the states. The quote that shows this is, "For instance, low to moderate doses distort perception that is enough to cause traffic accidents. In fact, study shows that weed is one of the most prevalent illegal drugs found in fatally injured and impaired drivers," from NYLN.org(2014). Marijuana is one of the leading causes of crimes, car accidents and other violent behaviors. It[marijuana] contains the chemical, tetrahydrocannabinol(THC), which is responsible for stimulating the CNS(central nervous system).
In the past decade, a number of movements to legalize the use of marijuana has been gaining momentum. According to the 2016 Gallup survey, a record high 60% of Americans say that marijuana should be legalized and this figure marks a 9% increase compared to 2014. Support for legalizing marijuana was 31% in 2000, 50% in 2016 before reaching 60% last year. This shows that despite government efforts to eliminate its use, marijuana is becoming more popular. It is clear that
In a survey conducted, it showed that over half (62%) of the Americans surveyed expressed that they would not feel comfortable seeing someone smoking marijuana in public. This shows how unequipped many citizens are to witness the act of someone smoking marijuana in public, and also shows how unprepared Americans are for the legalization of marijuana. If marijuana were to be legalized, society would not be ready to adapt to changing laws. The thought of marijuana being illegal would still linger in citizen’s minds showing how marijuana should not be legalized because of how countless people know it is a dangerous and illegal
In my opinion, every state eventually is going to have marijuana legalized because I am sure that all of this information has been brought to their attention before, but this is just a time taking process as the population grows and they begin to see a huge change in the total United States
Growing up in the United States you have heard smoking is bad for you and can cause many health problems, but now the tables are starting to change. Today almost 53% of americans say the marijuana plant should be legalized. With today's technology and science marijuana can be used from medical purposes to salad dressings. Most of my friends in high school smoke marijuana because to they find it to help them relax and take their mind off of school and their everyday lives. Most high school students and young adults all across the United States smoke marijuana more than any other generation because they are the individuals with the busiest lives and seemingly most difficult times than our grandparents.
People believe that if marijuana is legalized users will get addicted. Marijuana use disorder become what is known as addiction when “the person cannot stop using the drug even though it interferes with many aspects of his or her life” (“Is Marijuana Addictive”). Although addiction is a problem, out of all the people who use marijuana, only 9% become dependent on it (“Is Marijuana Addictive”). Also, opioids and painkillers are very addictive as well, and they can lead to an overdose resulting in death. The second concern is abuse.
As most people know, drug can easily make people addicted. Conventional drugs such as opium, heroin, methamphetamine (ice), morphine, marijuana, cocaine can all classify as narcotic drugs and psychotropic drugs. Drug has been a severe problem for decades. The U.S government attaches great importance to this issue. However, there are just an increasing number of people calling for legalizing drugs.
The topic of this controversial essay will be about is the legalization of marijuana. I will be advocating for the legalization of marijuana. The legalization of marijuana is so controversial because it was outlawed in the past, but now people are discovering new things it could do and wish to have it legalized once again. The legalization of marijuana can offer medical benefits, generate a lot of tax money, and decreases prisoner space. The legalization of marijuana can offer many health benefits.
Today the demands are changing in different states. In States such as Colorado and Washington, marijuana has been legalized for recreational use. This move raised several questions as far as decriminalization of marijuana is concerned. Besides portraying the US in a bad light, legalization of marijuana for recreation increases the risk of developing mental problems, increases government expenditure on public health, jeopardizes the future of children, and is a gateway to other dangerous drugs. Increased health problems and public health expenditure-
Why Marijuana Should be Legal Marijuana is a very prominent issue in society today. Many false and slanderous things have been said about marijuana in recent times. But the truth about marijuana continues to reveal itself. Sadly these truths are being criticised because of the stereotypical view that many people call the typical “pot smoker”.
It’s already being used throughout most of the U.S, and “According to a National Institutes of Health Survey in 2012, 49% of those polled had tried weed at one time in their lives.” ( qtd Gabriel Bell ). Marijuana isn’t a bad drug, history and facts can prove that. Therefore, something needs to be done to legalize the use of marijuana. Change is happening, so let’s make it
It was made illegal in the 1930’s for the same reasons as alcohol, because it was believed that it was going to do harm to society. As years have gone by, it is obvious that a mistake was made. The fact that marijuana was made illegal has created numerous problems for the United States that on the long run could have been easily avoided. Countries in different parts of the world and some states within the United States have already legalized marijuana and they have all shown positive outcomes out of their decisions. Although marijuana is illegal in majority of the states, legalizing marijuana for recreational use would bring about social and economical reforms that would help deter crime in the country, increase the amount of money the government makes, and also help people that are medically in need of the drug.
Legalization of Marijuana What comes to mind when thinking about “illegal drugs”? Cocaine? LSD? Heroin? All these drugs are dangerous, bearing countless long-term negative effects. But what about marijuana?
According to Bernie Sanders, “It is time to tax and regulate marijuana like alcohol. It is time to end the arrest of so many people and the destruction of so many lives for possessing marijuana”. This argument is important because marijuana is considered a "gateway drug," which has not been scientifically proven. Many people have tried marijuana or at least know someone who has attempted to smoke weed. A person most likely does not know as much as they think they know about what it is or the effects.
