On February 14, 2018, a nineteen year old male walked into Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School with an AR-15 rifle. The shooter killed 17 students, dropped his gun, and then disguised himself as a student and ran out with them. The shooter was eventually taken into custody. This shooter has done more to separate this country than ISIS ever could have imagined. In the days to come after this shooting, the social media keyboard warriors have gone to war. Quoting statistics, postings meme, and everyone coming up with their short quick answer to unequivocally answer this problem. The problem is, everyone is being incredibly short minded. Does anyone really think that one decision, one law change, one mental health change is going to fix …show more content…
The Enoch Brown School Massacre, July 26th, 1764. It may appear that we have been living with school violence for quite some time now. There is no doubt that the violence at schools has become more prominent since the 1960’s, but still is a part of our history. Do we need to come to grips with reality and understand that this possibility is here to stay and we need to find ways to correct it to keep our children safer? Second, in 1999 when the massacre at Columbine High School happened, I remember this country standing much more together; there wasn’t this defiance against our neighbor because they thought something different. When the Twin Towers were attacked by hijacked airplanes, did this country start feuding with each other on how one political party was to blame or this was the airlines fault for allowing this to happen? No, this country came together united and worked as one to come up with further safety precautions to try to deter and prevent these attacks from happening. But now, there is a clear cut division between people. I’m kind of confused that everyone knows exactly what to do when I have yet to hear an explanation …show more content…
I had a conversation recently with a few police officers and we were discussing TV shows from the past. Family Matters, Home Improvement, and Saved by the Bell to name a few. What we came up with was that those were TV shows that everyone in a family could sit down and watch. No one would worry that they would come across a topic that might be too inappropriate for younger children. I don’t think I could come up with a single TV show right now that doesn’t have a strong sexual content or metaphors. Last Man Standing is one of the more wholesome shows I can think of off the top of my head and that show still has a strong suggestive sexual content. Our social norms have become highly sexual. Do our young adolescents pick up on this? You’re lying if you say no. Young boys are seeing graphic pictures early on and that kick starting their sex drive. And what if this young boy has not been taught self-control? This young growing boy does not have two parents that are currently teaching and implementing parenting skills to teach self-control, strong moral values, and the difference between right and wrong? Is there a chance that this young boy is going to be put in a situation with another young girl who has learned promiscuity from television and celebrities in our time? Does this possibly create a situation where the boy believes he should or wants touch, fondle, or sexually assault this
The past decade has not seen any notable family sitcoms that has surpassed such leaps of social justice as some had in the 1950’s or 1970’s. While that may be disappointing to some, this is also a great feat for all television audiences. So many issues that were once considered, “taboos,” now, can be the premise of the sitcom altogether. Even the little things like interracial couples, married partners in the same bed, and even mentioning a pregnant woman is considered normal. Yes, the family sitcom is still no direct comparison to the modern family arrangement, but it is as close as were going to get for
Students today live their day-to-day lives in constant fear of what seems inevitable. The United States has one of the highests rates of school shootings in the world. Society has become so desensitized to these shootings that they are no longer shocked to hear about another school falling victim to it. Even when students take a stand against gun violence, the only solution offered to them is a proposition to arm teachers. However, bringing more guns into a school will only further deteriorate the situation.
At this very moment in time, the pendulum for the United States is not swinging in the right direction. We are moving farther away from the utopian world that was once desired by many Americans across the United States. This is partly due to the school shootings that have been occurring nation wide. It seems that the majority population is being torn apart by such a controversial issue. The people in the United Sates that do not support Trumps decisions would rather seem him fail, than accept the fact that he is our president and to see him do something good with his power.
After the tragic and cold-hearted school killings at Sandy Hook Elementary School, in Newtown, Connecticut, 20 children and 6 adult staff members were fatally shot. The number of school shootings within the past few decades has risen dramatically, which is just not acceptable. How can anyone accept the thoughtless cruelty with these young precious lives being treated like they are replaceable?
19 years ago, the Columbine School Shooting. 11 years ago, Sandy Hook elementary school shooting. 6 years ago, the Virginia Tech shooting. Just last year, the Las Vegas shooting that killed 58 and harmed hundreds other. Just last month, the Stoneman Douglas high school shooting, that killed 17 and emotionally and physically harmed dozens more.
This article has great viewpoints, use of argumentative reasoning, and shows what truly happens in the hallways of a school shooting. The main person he explains is Eric Harris, who killed over two-thousand students and faculty in a Colorado high school in 1998. He set off bombs all over the school and used a semi-automatic
So with all these kids dying wouldn't you agree that we need better mental health support, so we can prevent all these shootings? I believe that if we had good and strong mental health support services in the USA then tragic events like Columbine H.S. & Sandy Hook would probably never happen. That is why I am supporting for the USA to talk more about how to create more mental health support programs to help prevent gun violence events. A nonprofit group that attempts to prevent gun violence called “Everytown for Gun Safety,” released a statement about school shootings. The organization claimed that the school shooting at “[Marjory Stoneman Douglas High] is the 18th school shooting in the U.S. in 2018.’” (Cox and Rich). In less than three months, there have been eighteen school shootings. This shows that schools are no longer a safe environment.
There are many symbolic youth-centered shows like The Donna Reed Show, Leave It to Beaver, and The Patty Duke Show appeared in this era. These programs have had an enduring impact
Another, more adult, TV show that demonstrates sexism is “The Bachelor”. The show is basically a dating game that shows sexism for both male and female. The females of the show believe that the men only want sex, and un-meaningful relationships and the males stereotype
However the themes of sexism, racism, homophobia, and the expectations of men and women, as well as the societal standards regarding health, smoking, drinking, and the freedom of the USA, and the people within it, during these times, was well portrayed and showcased. Although there have been many series and television shows that have had a cultural impact in the past several decades, shows like Mad Men have showcased in the past decade, a shift towards formative, well-acted, and quasi-realistic television series that showcase past decades to a current
I agree that the content of television has change tremendously. Reading your comparison makes me realize just how much television as a whole has progressed over the years. In the 1950 's, I doubt showing a gay couple, or talking about sex would have been acceptable in the 1950 's. As we saw in I Love Lucy, the word "pregnant" was not even allowed to be said on screen, so it shows how much more conservative television shows were back then . Additionally, as you mentioned Leave it to Beaver had a simple plot, while Modern Family focused on different storylines. That shows how much more complex the scriots hace become over the years.
School safety is a very controversial topic in the U.S. There are many cases of people questioning the safety of schools. Recent school shootings raised concerns over school safety. While this has received a lot of attention, other things such as drugs, ara problem in schools. Even teachers have spoken out about the lack of safety of their schools.
What has happened to all our wholesome, slap stick family sitcoms? It seem as if todays shows all have violence, cuss words, nudity and scandal. Sometime it would be nice to watch a show with the family that we did not have to prescreen first. Take for example, if one wanted to have family time watching I Love Lucy or the Andy Griffith Show, there would be no worries of some obscene gestures popping up or a man with a butcher knife coming out of the closet trying to stab someone to death. Sitcoms like those made in the fifties are hard to come by and dearly missed there are many things that have been lost in the progression of film.
It may not seem like it at the moment but sure enough...it is. The effects on young minds from television has its pros and cons. People look more into the cons because they have become more of a problem over time. Another example, you may be on MTV or BET and see your favorite rapper again but
