If a driver has to come to a rapid stop and presses on the brakes, the seat belt will keep him or a passenger from sliding forward in their seat. In the worst case scenario, if an accident occurs, wearing a seat belt would keep drivers or passengers from being ejected out of a car. “Every year, more than 90 percent of all transportation-related deaths are caused by highway crashes. The single greatest defense against highway fatalities is a vehicle's seat belts. When used properly, seat belts reduce the risk of fatal injury to front seat vehicle occupants by 45 percent” (Higgins n.p.).
A great number of young lives are tragically cut short every year, in one of the leading causes of death in the world: car accidents. Soon after obtaining their permit at just sixteen, a large amount of teens end up making a fatal mistake while driving and lose their lives. America, understandably concerned with the death rate, has since implemented stricter laws regarding obtaining a driver’s license, and many are considering raising the minimum driving age. Throughout time, young age has always been correlated with recklessness and carelessness, and it would be sensible to take that into account when taking a stance on such a dangerous issue as car accidents. In order to increase safety and reduce death, it would be prudent to raise the minimum driving age.
In 2014, nearly 90,000 motorcyclists were injured in road accidents. Although there was a decrease of almost 15% in crashes involving motorcycles, the fatality rate among motorcyclists remains a cause for concern. So, one thing is for sure-motorcycle safety awareness has to be turned into a year round initiative, instead of limiting it to just the month of May. Motorcyclists are at a distinct disadvantage when on the road; they have smaller vehicles with lower stability and are more vulnerable to road conditions and inclement weather. To compound their
For 16 year olds, the thought of obtaining a drivers license is exciting. Being able to go shopping, visit with friends, and just drive around town is a major step towards being independent. However, there are risks when driving. In the Havens family, all four teenagers that drive have been in an accidents within the first six months of driving independently.
This makes it clear that no matter the protection, the game should be the one changing instead of the protection. Safety equipment does not always increase safety the way its designers or legislators think it will. A study found football helmets on average reduce the risk of traumatic brain injury by only 20 percent compared to not wearing helmets. Alarmingly, those helmets with the least protection are the most popular ones out in the field. It is most likely for player to keep getting hurt than for the NFL or any other organization to ban a game that brings the attention of millions of
December 16, 2016 - Period 8 Jake Silver Driving Toward Vaccination Since personal automobiles became common, car collisions have been a reality. Not including the 50 million people injured annually, there are 1.3 million global fatalities every year resulting from preventable car accidents. The United States federal government has blamed everything from the laws to the vehicles themselves – even simple chance. Studies proved these accusations incorrect. In fact, a major factor contributing to modern collisions is actually the driver's lack of driving knowledge.
That’s a high number of teens that put everyone at risk because of the urge to text while driving. Seppa also adds that according to the National Safety Council 100,000 plus crashes a year are caused because of texting while driving (par. 40). So what is our government doing to try and prevent people from texting and driving? Jeff Hecht, author of “Just Hang Up and Drive” explains that 41 states have banned people from texting while driving and six different states have banned teens from using their phones while driving. This didn’t come into effect until many accidents occurred in which they couldn’t ignore the problem any longer (par. 10).
Thinking about hurting yourself or others by reading/sending a text message isn’t worth your life.(Pathos) The National Security Council reports that, ‘’Using your cell phone while driving leads to 1.6 million crashes. Nearly 330,000 injuries occur each year from accidents caused by texting and driving,’’ (Ethos) Isn’t that so crazy to think about? While having the freedom of driving by yourself and then when you get to drive other people, you have so much responsibility. You can’t only think for yourself but for your passengers. My dad always said that driving is a big task and you can’t joke around while doing it.
There is a wreck occurring every minute of every day, and in 2009, seatbelts saved almost 13,000 lives. Fifty three percent of people do not wear the restraints and if everyone would wear them, 4,000 more people would be alive today. Seat belt advertisements often pop-up while consumers often watch their favorite soap operas, football games, and game shows. The advertisements often show a gruesome car crash, body bags being led away by the ambulance, and police writing tickets to people who fail to obey. The ad Embrace Life chose to advertise shows how a seatbelt could save a life.
There have been so many gun incidents in the this world ours , we still don’t have a type of law for gun control policies, and there should be. There are about 100,000 Americans killed each year by guns. If the Congress could just lay some type of control on guns right now, we can save many lives from being in danger, stop all the school shootings, and have a better, more safe life. Gun policies can help lower crime rate and stop children and irresponsible adults from getting guns. Having a gun control laws can help save more lives in this world and stop having families suffer in pain because a mental man had killed a member that belongs to their family.
Although it is a law commonly evaded; it prevents young people from car accidents and alcohol abuse or dependence. In the article is acknowledged that “more than 40 percent of college students reported at least one symptom of alcohol abuse or dependence”; a rate that would be highly increased if the drinking age is reduced. On top of that, it is worth considering the magnitude in which car accidents have dropped since the drinking age was lowered. The organization Mother Against Drunk Driving (MADD) CEO Chuck Hurley said “Nearly all peer- reviewed studies looking at the change showed raising the driving age reduced drunk-driving deaths.” It is undeniable that lowering the drinking age would generate an already managed issue in regards alcohol and its relation to car
A third-degree felony conviction for intoxication assault will result in at least two years and possibly up to ten years in a state prison. Intoxication manslaughter, killing someone while operating a motor vehicle while under the influence, may result in up to 20 years in prison. While fines and other penalties might be deterrents for driving while under the influence, the number one reason you should avoid it is the safety of yourself and those around you.
According to the NHTSA $26,000 people lost their lives within the first nine months of 2015, due to traffic fatalities, this number increased 9.3 % from 2014 (2015). Drivers make the wrong decisions consistently throughout the period in which they drive. Drinking and driving is the main culprit, law enforcement continually allows repeat offenders on the road after an arrest for DUI. That 's why I pose the question “How significant is your family to you?” We need to take a stand and ask policy makers to help drivers, and pedestrians in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania maintain the safety for all.
For students, this means consequences on the road. According to Should School Start Later?” the author states, “Studies show that well rested teens get higher grades, have higher test scores and miss fewer days of school. They also have a lower risk of car accidents.” Imagine a sleep deprived student, driving to school, but then he rams into other cars in the parking lot.
If we don't have to wear a helmet when we ride our motorcycles then why do we have to wear a seatbelt in an enclosed vehicle. Most people say seat belts save lives but seat belts can also end lives or severely injure you. For instance if your in your car and you get into an accident and you have your seatbelt on. The seat belt locks but you keep moving you break ribs and your neck they take you to the hospital and tell you you are paralyzed from the neck down. Now let's say you didn't have your seatbelt on and you are stopped by your your air bag and just have bruised ribs and a minor concussion.
