In a desolate world with no food, water, and safety your survival can be a spark of hope for the future. Your survival can be pointless and your oasis really lies in the next world. What does surviving mean? The natural instinct of fear influences survival by making actions life preserving ones without even weighing actions on the right and wrong scale. With no food, water, and safety desperation takes a hold and like the devil on your shoulder it can push you to do things that normally would have been unacceptable. The overwhelming gloom of death hangs over your head waiting for starvation or cannibalism. In and unforgiving world living is suffering, death can lead you to your oasis as well as pain. To avoid pain and survive you have to be willing to do the unthinkable. Letting go of life at the mercy of your own hands is giving up because you are weak, but strong because you realized the reality of the situation and knew that pain was all that was going to follow. All these factors affect your survival whether you fight for it or let death consume you, but one thing can change all of that for better or for worse. In The Road by Cormac Mccarthy, survival is key and fueled by fear, desperation, and death, but is ultimately superseded by morality. Fear is your greatest ally and your worst enemy.
