About Dr. John Gottman’s Article “What Makes Marriage Work” 1. Why do you think Gottman wrote an article on marriage? In my opinion, Gottman considers a marriage being the basis, on which our society is built. However, there are not many people understand what is the basis of the marriage.
Categorized into three styles called companionship, dependence, and interdependence, married couples can be ‘in love’, individual with their own separate interests, or maintain a healthy balance within their relationship. Marriage is a tricky institution to navigate, and no one person will get it right, but considering the evolutionary changes of society and popular movements in history, these three styles describe the different marriages and gender roles. Before the 1920’s, men and women upheld separate gender roles in which men were the breadwinners, and females worked in the home, taking care of children and maintaining the love in the relationship. Eventually, women began to enter the workforce outside of their homes where they depended
Chapter 20 demonstrated the importance and the beneficial of marriage; in addition, explained why couples do not marry. However, the article begins an anecdotal story of Renita Pitts and transitions to some of the financial benefits for marriage. Personally, the reading made me think about why people in society must be married. In my opinion, marriage should not have any financial benefits; alternatively, should only hold personal symbolic value. Society should not pressure anyone to marry, similarly to how Renita felt pressured to stay married.
It is evident that marriage is full of ups and downs, but the way couples manage these fluctuations in their relationship determines the strength of their connection. Both partners in a committed relationship must feel the same way and work equally as hard to push through potential obstacles. Being devoted to the relationship can ensure that the marriage will be able to survive the hardships and maintain a healthy, successful marriage. The emotional hardships and positives that a married couple endures on a daily basis are presented throughout the entirety of the poem, “Marriage”, by Gregory Corso. Corso’s poem explores the pressures and factors that influence marriage and sheds light on Updike’s short story about a couple facing divorce.
The lack of love in the society does not allow people to be happy. Getting married is often considered one of the best and happiest days of a person’s life. This great moment will never happen for the people who live in this society because they are not allowed to love someone. Once Equality and Liberty leave society, they find a house that makes them happiest they have ever been and they say “we shall never leave this house nor let it be taken from us” (91). They plan on living in the house for the rest of their life and starting a family.
For example, mothers continue having children out of wedlock to increase the amount of money and benefits they received from welfare programs. Marriage is one of the two most important factors contributing to personal happiness. Marriage is also a very strong factor in promoting the upward mobility of children (Rector, 2006). Marriage is the greatest protector against child poverty. Children born to a married mother and father are about 80 percent less likely to be poor compared to children in single-parent homes.

Marriage can have many viewpoints that can either be similar or different, depending on the person and their religious beliefs, or other reasons. Some people choose to be married after school, when they have chosen a career they want to go into and have a stable job. Others desire to be married right out of high school before they even think about a career choice. Some people don't put in any thought about marriage and how it is going to affect their lives. Most women are ready to tie the knot because the thought about moving in with their loved one sounds amazing.

Marriage is an important institution in a society and although there have been changes in the trend of marriage pattern, it is still very clear that marriage still matters. Marriage exists and its main aim is to bring two people together to form a union, where a man and a woman leave their families and join together to become one where they often start their own family. Sociologists are mostly interested in the relationship between marriage and family as they form the key structures in a society. One of the main purposes of marriage is to maintain a permanent relationship, but nowadays marriage doesn’t lead to a permanent relationship due to the increase of divorce rates.
The criteria often objectify and degrade an individual when people are searching for an appropriate marital candidate for their family members. Rushing into a marriage increases the probability of misinterpreting a person’s personality. An arranged marriage is likely to trap two incompatible individuals in an unhappy marriage for life. For many people, divorce is simply not an option. I cannot deny that many arranged marriages are successful with positive outcomes.

It was also said in certain reports that they are more satisfied with their lives than the unmarried. Majority of the married are also stable with regards to their financial state.
