You are sitting in your classroom and the teacher is teaching the class a new lesson. You start to fall asleep and soon you wake up and realize that you have an assignment and have no clue how to do it because you had fell asleep during class. Now you have to go up to the teacher and embarrass yourself by asking the teacher to reteach the lesson to you because you fell asleep in class. Schools should start later and students wouldn’t have this problem. Students that don’t get that much sleep every night affects them when they get older as well as also right now. Well this argument overlooks that if schools started later than kids would actually be better at their after school activities if they did do them. Even if students had to go to after school activities later than normal it is better for them. Students that go to after school activities build self-esteem, sets goals, uses teamwork and gets better grades. Having later start times can benefit kids in many ways such as improving their grades. When schools have later start times, students can wake up later and be more awake leading to them being more attentive in class and getting better grades. Why Schools Should Acquire Later Start Times A substantial amount of evidence shows that the majority of adolescents don’t get nearly enough sleep for maximal/ideal functioning during the day. I believe this is immensely accurate, as I can relate to this 100%, associated with multiple friends my age that are also able to understand. Adolescents tend to increasingly stay up later as they advance through high school, (Danner and Phillips), which, in my opinion, could possibly be due to parents giving their children slightly more freedom than when they were younger. Teenagers’ tending to stay up later results in early school start times decreasing their amount of sleep and therefore increases the adolescents’ daytime sleepiness.
It has to be hard for teachers having to deal with their pupils falling sleep in class all the time. If students fall asleep in class, what do they learn? No work gets done, which means grades drop tremendously. If school started and ended later in the day, teachers and students would not have to worry about grades dropping because students would be alert and ready to learn.
If we had late start every day then the school would have to push back sports. People would also have to quit sports or not be able to play as much if they were doing out of school sports. Also people wouldn’t be able to do as much after school. Kids would also wait last minute to do homework.
