I often find myself irritated when my mom asks me to clean my room. However, I’ve recently realized she just wants me to have the habit of picking up after myself when I am on my own. Even though sometimes it is hard, I am very thankful for the way my parents have raised me because I have learned how to be

Acquiring a job, whether it be in a doctor’s office or a fast-food restaurant, can transform a person. Jobs tend to educate employees, either indirectly or directly, both about themselves and life in general. But, when the house is all male, who is doing the domestic work? Out of necessity the men have to learn how to do household duties such as cooking, ironing, grocery shopping, and cleaning for the first time in their life which represents a big role change for them. In addition to these domestic tasks, “most of them also held restaurant jobs, where they worked busing tables, washing dishes, preparing food, and cooking: these work experiences also widened their repertoire of domestic skills”. (Hondagneu-Sotelo, 408) Culturally, their mom and/or their sisters would be the ones to take care of these tasks when they were younger and then once they are married it becomes the wife’s responsibility. With the absence of women in these bachelor communities, the men are forced to do things for themselves.

My grandmother kitchen is my icon of exquisite taste. I grew up with her, and she owned a pupuseria in my childhood. Tomasita’s Pupuseria was the most popular pupuseria in my town, every weekend her house was full of people waiting to get a table or to take pupusas to go, one of the best memories ever. The smell of pupusas all around the block was paradise. It was her tradition to feed first her family before the pupuseria opened, so we as a family were the first ones to eat her exquisite dish.

In high school I participated in a culinary competition called C-CAP (Careers through Culinary Arts Program), Josh was one of the judges my sophomore, junior, and senior year. He donated his time, expertise and also a scholarship for aspiring culinarians. I have had the opportunity to work with Josh at the Taste of America event put on by the James Beard Foundation. Not only did he teach me a ton in that short night, he also offered me a position in his kitchen staff at Posh. Josh Hebert is inspiring to me because he worked in several restaurants and came to the realization that he loved the industry but couldn’t stand the daily grind.
