Imagine you are stuck in a jail cell, blindfolded. You are forced to do ever anyone says, and you do tricks for other amusement. That’s how a whale in captivity feels all the time. Whales shouldn’t be held captive because whales are taken from their families, whales are forced to do shows, and most importantly whales have to live in to small tanks which can be harmful to the whale. One thing Seaworld isn’t telling us is that they take whales from their families in the wild. When whales are taken from families they are lost forever. When a whale is taken from its pod, ( families lived in pods) the whale could have some negative effects. Every pod has their own way of speaking with whistling and shrieks. When whales go to aquarium they …show more content…
When a whale is captured, trainers start to force whales to do stunt. The whales are forced to perform to people for money. According to Richard Bloom, “ Keeping orcas in captivity for human amusement must end. Forcing these intelligent creatures around is not right. ” This stated that forcing whales to do unnatural thing such as flips can be unhealthy for many whales. Almost all whales die of bacteria in the lungs or lack of exercise. While Seaworld claims that these shows inspire children, the whales are getting sick. The whales are forced to to tricks for food. None of these stunts would naturally happen in the wild. Seaworld is in it for the money. While whales are stuck in prison Seaworld is getting …show more content…
Whales in the wild live old and healthy to about the age of 30 - 60. In captivity, whales have a slim chance of that. Whales in captivity live 3 to 15 years. Clearly this is not right. I think whales in captivity should be banned.

Whales in captivity have become too much for humans to handle. Many of the pools that they are kept in are far to small to accommodate their need for exercise. The small pools can also cause a large amount of stress for these animals as well. Sometimes these animals, like dolphins, are kept in captivity for research. After being in captivity for too long
That’s so crazy! Some people like to think that if SeaWorld has to close down, then so should the zoo. But that is really different, at the zoo no know has been hurt by an animal (at least I don’t think so), but at SeaWorld they have been many death occurred, because kids think it is safe for them to touch the animals, plus while training the orcas killed the trainers. “Orcas in the wild have an average life expectancy of 30 to 50 years—their estimated maximum lifespan is 60 to 70 years for males and 80 to over 100 for females. The average age of death for orcas who have died at SeaWorld is 13 years old,” by SeaWorldog Hunt.
They take things and just believe it without knowing the truth or doing any research to support the claim. Today in the United States there are approximately three different Sea Worlds located in San Diego, San Francisco, Orlando, and San Antonio. Over the past years, Sea World has begun to lose a lot of revenue and money because of drastic drops in people attending Sea World. According to Michael Calia in his article “Sea World hit by Bad Press; Stock Off 33%” this drop is mainly because of the recent media debate about the treatment of the captive Orcas in Sea World. Publicists and media stated that the treatment of these animals was very bad and they deserved to be set free into the
In conclusion Blackfish is gives audiences a shocking, aggressive and deeply compelling look into cruel practices of marine parks for decades that will change the way you look at captive/trained killer whales and other animals. In watching this documentary has significantly opened my eyes regarding the brutal treatment and methods of capturing wild animals giving me a greater sympathy for orcas in parks such as SeaWorld. This startling documentary will surprise audiences as Cowperthwaite is unrelenting in showing the fatal consequences of keeping killer whales in captivity while also critiquing of the cruel and immoral practises of
Marine parks in the country like SeaWorld, have orcas in tanks that they live in captivity. They use most of the killer whales for their performances in the pool. We all know that orcas are social, and intelligent creatures, that live in the oceans of the earth. We also know that many scientist are trying to study these animals in captivity where they are in tankes. I think Killer Whales should not be in captivity because, of the injures they can get in their tanks, how they get stressed out and they are better in the wild.
Do you remember that day that you and your family took a trip to that one park? That one that you got to see many different types of sea animals, dolphins putting on shows, and getting to even interact with the sea animals in a great learning experience. That park is SeaWorld. When you were there, you might have not noticed the stuff that was happening behind the scenes. Lately, the animals have been very sad and not living healthy lives.
In 2013, the documentary called Blackfish was released, a story about a killer whale that over the years at SeaWorld killed several people. It highlighted some of the major problems with animals in captivity. SeaWorld, known for having several different animal attractions; Dolphin Cove, Dolphin Nursery, Orca Underwater Viewing, Shark Encounter, Wild Arctic (Habitat) and many more. The organization first started with the intention of learning more about animals in order to educate the public about different behaviors of each animal. Trainers at Seaworld are offered the opportunity to get hands-on training with animals and are eventually are allowed to entertain the public with the skills they have acquired.
I, myself, have been to SeaWorld and have seen the way the animals are treated, with love and respect. Although it is terrible to see such beautiful animals out of their natural habitat, SeaWorld are unable to return them to their homes, as for many animals in the SeaWorld parks, it is their home. Many animals in captivity, such as the infamous Tilikum and Katina, are now too old to be returned to the sea, and frankly, too big. Many of these whales were in fact captured by fishermen many years ago, and have lived in a tank since, but to remove them from the environment at this stage in their life is unfair and would cause great trauma to
Director, writer, and producer, Gabriella Cowperthwaite, in her documentary, Blackfish, describes the shameless hunting and treatment of killer whales. Cowperthwaite’s purpose is to persuade us into opening our eyes to the reality of what we are doing to killer whales by confining them in captivity. She invents an emotionally wrenching tone in order to transmit to the adult viewers that living in captivity may not be acceptable life for the whales. The film effectively showed that the whales should not be kept in captivity by giving the audience examples of their signs of aggression and displays of emotion. Cowperthwaite begins her documentary by showing how killer whales can become barbaric when held captive.
Furthermore, this can be the cause of all the incidence including to what happened to Dawn Brancheau who was completely mutilated by a whale. Despite the interview with a former trainer, from a document which was published after the release of Blackfish by SeaWorld to object
This film about these extremely diverse mammals shows true footage of the whales and what they are capable of in captivity. It also talks about a lot of wrongs that are done to the whales in captivity by people who were there and done it or witnessed it themselves. The film gives out a lot of good information and statistics that have been proven by others as well. Because this source focuses on captivity and the poor treatment of whales, as will my paper, It will come to great use when the time comes to use
The target audience of this documentary is the general public that includes a big emphasis on the customers of SeaWorld. The filmmakers are trying to inform the public of the inhumane treatment and the conditions that the orcas face while at amusements parks such as SeaWorld. As described in the film, orcas are seen as intellectual animals that are aware of their surroundings. Because of their intellect, orcas don’t belong in a place SeaWorld and should be released.
Andre Cole Ricardo Acosta G. English 101 September 22, 2015 Do Killer Whales Actually Belong in Captivity? Ever since wild animals such as Killer Whales have been captured and kept in theme parks and zoos as amusement, there have been issues on whether they should or shouldn’t be kept in captivity. Killer Whales, otherwise commonly referred to as Orcas, have regularly been taken away from the sea at a very young age so they can be trained, raised and kept in theme parks for exhibition. Although theme parks no longer capture whales from the wild, they are still bred in captivity for public display at marine parks such as Sea World (Gorman).
This is exactly how animals held captive in zoos and sea-parks feel. Zoos generally hold a variety of animals for public display, also known as “zoological parks.” On the other hand, sea-parks, hold fish and amphibians. These parks that exhibit animals are inhumane and barbaric. Vulnerable creatures are being abused daily and few seem to care about this issue.
In my opinion, I believe that marine mammals should not be held in captivity for many reasons. To start, they are taking away the animals from their natural habitat. Secondly, captivity causes both major and minor health problems. Another significant reason is that the poor marine creatures do not have enough space to swim resulting in severe boredom and causing them to do harm to themselves Captivity causes many health problems for the innocent marine mammals. There was an incident when Six of Marineland 's seals were blinded, or got serious eye problems because of the unclean water.
