Persuasive Essay Why Do Animals Matter

Everyone who owns a television has seen the “Somewhere in America” commercial at least once, which was published by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. This commercial is full of emotions and most people, “Always change the channel because they can’t take it anymore,” (McLachlan). The most depressing parts of this commercial is the pictures because the dogs and cats are all beaten up and suffering from being abused and neglected by their owners. As a matter of fact, they are trying to make the audience feel sympathetic so they can join the ASPCA. The ASPCA tries to encourage audience monetary donation by using ethos by their tone, logos and pathos from the pictures and the statistics.

Over 100 million animals are used as test subjects in the world, with approximately 26 million of them in the United States. Sadly, a majority of the time the products that are being tested on animals are not even effective once human trials begin. Consumers might object that if the products were tested to be safe on animals then they would be safe for humans. Yet, 92% of the times the products actually work in animal trials they are later deemed too dangerous or uneffective for people. Which means that most of the animals used in scientific testing are being abused for no apparent reason. Due to this realization, it seems ridiculous to continue to harm, expose to danger, and mistreat animals all in the name of science.

Most of us have pets and consider them part of the family. As a result, we could never imagine the horror some animals are forced to endure at the hands of their caretakers. This particular ad depicts a powerful visual of a neglected dog, in poor health, chained to what seems to be a barrel. The copy in the ad, while minimal, is powerful: “Help Us Help them” and the words “Donate Today” (ASPCA). This ad is a public service announcement to bring awareness to the community concerning the horrors of animal abuse, its helpless victims, and to compel the public to make a financial donation to put an end to animal cruelty.

Every ten seconds an animal is abused or neglected by its owner. This shows a massive problem in our society. Supporting the ASPCA is a worthy endeavor due to its valiant goal. They are a main contender in fighting animal abuse and neglect and they give homes to animals in need. We need to change and they can help in getting us to that point.

Throughout thousands of years, animal testing has been proven to be beneficial for the human race. While it has done a wonderful job for us, it has only injured, killed and put an enormous amount of pain on animals. The exact number of animals used in research yearly is unknown, due to official government statistics not including mice, rats, birds, fish, or other animals used for testing: some estimates put the total number to be 26 million. The use of animals for scientific research is cruel and inhumane, while both humans and animals share similar traits, they are both made up of completely different genes making them poor test subjects to begin with and may mislead or cause side effects for both parties.

Animal testing has been an ongoing debate for hundreds of years. I have done research on the benefits and withdrawals of animal testing. What you guys may believe is right might be different than the person sitting next to you. I will be talking about the failures of testing, he benefits, and what supporters and opponents say about whether or not animals have the same rights as humans.

I’m here today to talk about a controversial issue that has been around for a period of time, animal testing. Animal testing using animals in experiments with different chemical substances in everything from medical to cosmetic to determine their safety as well as effectiveness . It’s a problem that has existed since the 3rd and 4th centuries BCE with its merciless methods and painful ways of abusing animals for human demands, but now it’s time for it to stop. Our technology has developed significantly since; therefore, such medieval methods of torturing animals are no longer necessary. Researches have shown that each year, over 100 million animals are tortured and killed in American laboratories alone, including dogs, cats and more; this shows how far out of hand animal testing have gotten. It’s cruel and inhumane, which is why it has to end right now. If you disagree, you have to ask yourself: “Why not? Why don’t you want to end their suffering? How can you sit there and watch such cruelty?”

On one side of the spectrum, supporters of animal testing point out how valuable the practice is to scientists, and the medical advances that have stemmed from animal research. According to the Foundation for Biomedical Research (FBR), “…practically every drug, treatment, medical device, diagnostic tool or cure we have today was developed with the help of lab animals” (“Benefits of Biomedical Research”). Imagine a day in the life of a common farm animal. Far from the peaceful grazing life one would envision, the livestock of today endure horrific conditions - from suffering painful diseases to being separated from their mothers at too young of an age. Not only are these conditions harmful to the animals, the food produced by them is unnecessary to humanity’s well-being and can even be damaging to society’s overall health. Since the definition of ethics is having well-founded standards of right and wrong, this process of producing meat for our consumption is unethical.
