At this point in a teenager’s life, their internal body clock is not functioning properly. Their body clock is set different from the other age groups, such as adults and children. It’s proven that teenagers just naturally want to stay awake in the later hours of the night, and then sleep in later in the mornings. According to a National Sleep foundation poll, at least 28% of teenagers fall asleep in their first class of the day. Someone could argue that this just makes going to their first class a complete waste of time.
School days should start later for junior high and high school Students because it can cause problems for teens. Doctors have figured out during the ages 13-18; students bodies start to release a chemical in the brain that causes them not to able to go to sleep at times before eleven o’ clock. Which can cause a numerous problems with health which can effect students especially at school .They also found out during theses age groups they need nine to nine and a half hour of sleep to be able to function in school; 60% to 70% of teens in America suffer from Sleep deprivation which can cause heart disease, diabetes, strike, and heart failure ,ect. The average number of school hours in the United States is 6.64 some schools still have school hours ranging from 6.43 to 8.17 hours a day. You can see the difference of a 6 hour school to 8 hour school quickly because students will be asleep.
You stay up late doing homework or playing games with your friends through xbox until your mom tells you to go to sleep. Even then it can be hard to fall asleep since you still feel awake. Many early starting high schools have changed their starting times because students grades were dropping and they were not as prepared and focused. The start time here at Mentor is affecting the student 's grades and overall mental health, however, there are many ways that we can fix this issue. Mentor High School starts at 7:22 A.M. and at that time the sun is still rising so some students have to walk to the bus stop in the dark. With extracurricular activities, sports, and homework most students do not have time to relax and spend time with friends and family. According to the national sleep foundation it is natural that teenagers are not able to fall asleep before 11 P.M.

School start times are getting earlier and earlier for middle and high school students. These schools are beginning class way too early in the morning, causing students to not get the proper amount of sleep at night and to be unfocused or asleep during class. It is proven that students do worse in all of their classes throughout the day if their first class starts before eight in the morning (Cduford). Starting classes for students before 8 ma wouldn’t be beneficial for them if they are just going to be tired and unfocused. The main problem of this issue is that students are not getting the proper amount of sleep at night.
The reason teenagers are sleep deprived is because of the start time of schools and the amount of homework students are given. A solution to sleep deprivation could be to push back the start times in school, lessen the amount of homework per night students are given, and to make a website to raise awareness.
Sleep can be one of the top concerns for a new parent. Babies usually have completely different sleep cycles as adults do. My roommate occasionally wakes me up in the middle of the night coughing. I had my own bedroom in high school and had to get used to living with a roommate. The living conditions aren’t ideal for sleep because the shades do not block out the morning light. People in the common room often create a significant amount of noise which interrupts my sleep. These distractions are common for college students and cause sleep deprivation.
