Abstract
Objective: The objective of this study was to assess the health problems of the agriculture workers who used pesticides to cultivate crops.
Materials and Methods: It was a cross sectional comparative study.
Place of study: A total of 91 agricultural workers from the Integrated Pest Management (IPM) area and 89 such workers from the Non-Integrated Pest Management (Non-IPM) area of Gazipur district were selected as respondents of the study.
Result: The mean age of the respondents was 36.6 ± 9.7 years and average length of their pesticides use was 10.7 years. More than 50% of the respondents had education up to primary level. Almost all (96.7%) the respondents among IPM workers followed the instruction of pesticide use while 58.4% of the Non-IPM workers followed the instructions to some extent and the difference was statistically significant (p<0.001). Regarding personal protection during the pesticide use, significant (p<0.001) different was found between IPM respondents (78.0%) and Non-IPM respondents (42.6%). Of the total respondents, 88.3% mentioned that they suffered from some physical problems during pesticide use. Later the IPM activities have been continuing in different phases. However, it appears that even after implementation of IPM in Bangladesh many of the agriculture workers are not following the proper way of crops cultivation as well as the use of pesticide and for which they are at risk of developing a number of manifestations which are attributable to pesticide toxcity4,5,8. In studies, it is revealed that the pesticide may cause many health problems amongst the exposed persons12-15.
