Lophophora Williamsii Lophophora Willaimsii, also known as the peyote cactus, is an extreme hallucinogen mainly used in Native American religious ceremonies and rituals. It is known to have been introduced by the southern plain tribes, because of where the cactus is from. This extreme drug has been illegal in the United States since 1918, but, in 1965, peyote was legalized for practice within Native American religious beliefs and practices for the NAC (Native American Church). Extremely vivid images, and loopy visuals is common when under the influence of peyote. In the new world when European immigrants arrived into the U.S., it was in belief that peyote was used for anti-Christian beliefs and was supposed to be the works of the devil. This “shroom”-LSD-like drug can be found in the southern parts of Texas, to the south-central parts of Mexico. Peyote is also one of the oldest known psychedelics. Peyote has been used in Native American ceremonies for thousands of years, and was supposedly introduced by the southern tribes. “We do know that …show more content…
First, Speer says that the ceremony will last from sunrise to sundown. Music, drums, and art are all present inside of the tepee. “Once inside you are there all night, saying prayers and using tobacco, cedar, and sage.” Speer continues (Waters 1). When praying, usually people only pray for needs more than wants. Praying for your mother and father to graduate college, or for a close relative to get well from sickness, would be a common prayer held inside. “They pray for each other’s needs.” Speer implies (Waters 1). There are many ways to ingest peyote as well. The peyote cactus has buttons on the tops of the plant, which can be dried and soaked in a liquid to create a drinkable substance. Peyote can be ground into a fine material and smoked with the traditional tobacco, or cannabis (Brands

Cannabis was first introduced to the new world during European conquest and colonial expansion during the sixteenth century. According to Campos, cannabis was not native to the land of Mexico when many indigenous thought it was. Its original name, pipiltzintzintlis, was first introduced to Mexico in the 1530s by conquistador Pedro Quadardo and it was to be cultivated and commercialized as a source of fiber for clothing, rope and sails for ships. However, during the 1770s a new purpose for cannabis arose and it involved smoking it. The indigenous people began smoking cannabis during this time for religious and ceremonial practices.

The theme of this weeks readings remind me of a famous quote by Richard Bach "The bond that links your true family is not one of blood, but of respect and joy in each other's life". In these reading winter ceremonies was a main focus. The "Potlach" was a name given to most winter ceremonies in the Natives of the Northwest Coast celebrations. Originating from the Nuu-chah-nulth meaning to give. The Chief called the Northwest Coast people together to attend Potlatches.
England wanted to land in the Americas because they believed that it had the same type of climate as the Mediterranean. Rum played an important role in the American Revolution because it was the only alcohol that the settlers would have. People turned to whisky and left rum because of the importation and taxing that came with it whereas whisky could be made there.
Ergotism comes from a fungus called Claviceps purpurea. It infects wheat, rye and other various grasses that were commonly farmed in the time of the trials. When the crop is first infected, the head of a grain will release yellow mucus which contains fungal spores that can spread the disease. Within the Sclerotia, which are the purple or black grains that form after the yellow mucus, are chemicals such as ergot alkaloids like including lysergic acid (which LSD is made from) and ergotamine. These ergot alkaloids will affect the nervous system, causing spasms or contractions.
America needs to stop using the penny. Every year the U.S. wastes around 55 million dollars on making pennies. They are harmful to the environment. Cost more to make then they are worth. So the U.S. needs to stop using them.
The Apache Sunrise Ceremony is a laborious 4 day and night ceremony that Apache girls partake in after completion of their first menstrual cycle. The Apache Indians, most of whom live on reservations in New Mexico and Arizona, believe that their earliest Apache relative is the ‘White Painted Woman’, that from her came life and the embodiment of earth itself. The Sunrise ceremony honors her spiritual image, and prepares Apache girls as they enter into the new phase of their life; womanhood. Preparation for the ceremony can begin as early as six months prior to the actual day. Apache girls spend much time studying their heritage and learning the responsibilities and virtues an Apache woman must uphold.
This stimulant drug is derived from the coca plant, and when used as a
But Marin has to overcome his nervousness and fear to accept the medicine bag. The next rite of passage is the Apache Girl’s rite of passage, it is about a girl named Dachina who is on the way of coming into womanhood. She does this by a four day ritual show her strength and endurance as well as preparing her for the challenges of womanhood. The third rite of passage is call the Cradle ceremony. The cradle ceremony is about a baby’s first time in its cradle which will be blessed to bring strength good fortune and health in the baby’s future.
When ergotism first infects the flowering head of a grain, it spews out a yellow-colored mucus containing fungal spores that spread the disease. The fungus eventually invades the developing kernels of grain, turning it into purplish-black sclerotia. Within the sclerotia are potent ergot alkaloids, including lysergic acid, from which LSD is derived, and ergotamine, which is now used to treat migraine headaches, demonstrating its psychoactive uses. The alkaloids affect the central nervous system and contract the muscles making up the walls of veins, arteries, and internal organs (PBS secrets of the dead). These disturbances to the central nervous system explain the previously unexplained maladies that plagued Salem such as temporary paralysis and fits.
These participants dance and feast into the night. They follow rules that are written on a board and visible during the ceremony such as: no littering and no consumption of liquor. The ceremony involves sacrifices made by the leaders, a river ritual, smoking from a pipe and multiple prayers. It’s a very important ritual to the Cherokee tribe and they perform it numerous times. The ritual also includes sermons that are lead by the leaders.
This ritual is very beneficial to the Hopi communities and also entertaining for them to watch and enjoy. There are several ceremonial performances that occur in my community annually. For example graduation whether it’s from high school or junior high is a performance that takes place at a school for
