I have had some personal hardships that have had a major impact on my life today. When I was ten, my father died in a car accident. I was very close with my dad, and losing him at such a young age was extremely difficult to overcome. It took a great deal of time, but I decided that the best way to honor my dad and his memory would be to set goals for myself and dedicate myself to these goals. One of these goals is to become a Doctor of Pharmacy. As difficult as losing my dad was, it did teach me a great deal about compassion and empathy. When people are dealing with difficult issues, whether it be medical ailments or personal loss, what they need most is someone who will listen to their needs with compassion and concern. I feel that my personal life experience has given me the ability to give back to the community by becoming a pharmacist. If I can help make people feel better and improve their quality of life, I feel that I will have made my dad proud and accomplished the goals I set out to achieve. My educational background has always been based on my goal of attending pharmacy school. I have excelled at my math and science based classes, and feel that my pre-pharmacy background has given me a strong foundation on which to continue to the next level. I have just recently job shadowed at a local community pharmacy, and this experience further solidified my desire to become a pharmacist. I felt very comfortable in this pharmacy setting. I saw just how important communication, listening, and organization are in the pharmacy

It was under the most delicate of circumstances, when I realized what I was born to do for the rest of my life. It was march 2007, my grandfather was suffering from pneumonia and due to his deteriorating condition he was hospitalized. I had flown in from Toronto to be by his side. Sitting anxiously by his bedside with tears in my eyes wondering if I could do anything to make my grandfather feel better, I watched doctors come and go , updating us on his blood reports, EKGs, chest x-rays, ABGs, and at the same time constantly counseling my concerned family members. As they explained what they were doing to bring my grandfather to the path of recovery, I watched in utter fascination.
More importantly, I become fascinated with the field. Pharmacy appeals to me as an intriguing and promising occupation. More importantly, it is also a noble profession. Merlo covered will apply direct to my future as a pharmacist. Even though I do not currently see myself going into retail pharmacy, I have been given an idea of the direction that pharmacy is moving in and how it is reforming patient healthcare, as well as the job opportunities of a pharmacist. I believe that the services and systems that pharmacies, such as CVS, have established will open up the doors for pharmacists to be more directly involved in managing the healthcare of their patients, and are ones that will tremendously expand the roles of pharmacists. I am excited to be entering the field of pharmacy at a time such as this, and look forward to being a part of both partaking in opportunities to serve patients that Mr. Merlo mentioned in his lecture, as well as creating new services and systems that will further enhance healthcare as a
My experiences with my brothers, cousins, grand and great grandparents have not only solidified my desire to become a medical professional, but it has also given me firsthand experience of how someone can truly make an impact on another person’s life. I have been exposed to two types of pharmacy environments: community (retail) and hospital (clinical). My mother worked as a retail pharmacy technician for nearly 20 years, allowing me multiple occasions of learning the key processes. Complications escalated when my father had a stress-induced heart attack, resulting in an unexpected trip to the emergency room. Following the heart attack, whenever I wasn’t at school or going to counseling it was my job to take of my father. I learned how to change bandages and to support someone not only weak physically, but also emotionally. During those few months my dad was my responsibility, and my sole purpose was to minimize the pain. Some days it was in the form of a hug, and other days it was in the form of preparing his medication.
I got a great impact on healthcare profession during the mission at my church and I chose the pharmacist as my goal. I want serving and healing others.
