TRADITIONAL MEDICINAL PROPERTIES
Phaseolus vulgaris (Linn) seeds have an important place in the folk medicine of the world and in the traditions of many cultures because of their pharmacotherapeutic effects. Kidney beans have been used as a medicinal tonic since ancient times.
It was used in homeopathy as diuretic for bladder ailments, gout, renitis, rheumatism and reduced blood sugar level. Seeds were used to treat leukemia (Duke and Ayensu 1985). Its herbal tea combinations were used for kidney and bladder problems.
As quoted from books Vegetables and Fruits: Nutritional and Therapeutic Values and Herbal Drugs and Phytopharmaceuticals: A Handbook for Practice on a Scientific Basis –“In folk medicine, the bean pod without seeds is used as diuretic and in the treatment of diabetes”. [25,26].
Another book The Divine Prescription and Science of Health and Healing also mentioned about the kidney pod tea in this manner-“In Europe,the kidney pod tea treatment is considered as the most effective for all forms of kidney and bladder disorders such as edema, etc and even in chronic gout and diabetes”(27).

Seeds of P. vulgaris at a dosage of 300 g/kg bw showed the largest reduction in blood glucose level in diabetic rats after three hours. For proving the antihyperglycemic activity of P. vulgaris seeds ,it was compared with the glibenclamide, an oral hypoglycemic agent. The combination of seeds of most dose (300 mg/kg bw) and higher dose of glibenclamide (0.20 g/kg bw) showed safer and effective hypoglycemic as well as antihyperglycemic activities in normal rats
